py The Dallas Post Section 2 Wednesday , June 10, 1998 By JENNIFER KLAIPS Post Correspondent LEHMAN - The Lake-Lehman girls’ soccer team just completed a season that will go down in history for the program and one they will not soon forget. With a record of 19-2, the Lady Knights are the District 2 champs, PIAA State runner- up, and the first WVC team to advance to the state title game. Entering this season, the team’s main goal was to win districts, and going above and beyond this goal was an unbelievable experience for both the players and coaches. The Knights are coached by Dave and Sports _ No shame in Lehman's 2nd place finish Jan Elston. “Our main goal was to take the District 2 title and maybe win one state game,” said Jan Elston. She never thought the team would make it this far. “We had the talent, but spring sports are hard to stay focused because there are so many distractions. But the team didn’t want to stop. Everyone was at practice. It was their hard work and determination that got them there,” she said. “Their work ethic was far greater than we ever expected. From the beginning of the season, they just wanted to get bet- ter,” Elston added. They would either ask for help or advice from the coaches or their teammates. “On the field they had to communicate with each other. All of “Holding up the runner-up state plaque was totally sweet.” the team members felt comfortable dis- cussing any aspect of the game with the seniors.” ; Team unity and cooperation seem to be the explanation for the Knights’ suc- cess. “We worked very well together,” said Sara Kasper, who is a senior outside midfielder /forward. “We were a very united team. There was a lot of leader- ship from the seniors, who supported the underclassmen, and the underclassmen looked up to the seniors.” The Knights were led by four senior captains: fender. “Everybody gets along as a team, which we never had before. It's been great,” said senior forward Kelly Spen- cer. Yoh slugged a grand slam home run, a 2-run homer and a double in going three for three at the bat. On the mound, he struck out seven in picking up the vic- tory. Steve Fritz struck out two in recording the save. Jeff Pace went two for three for the Yankees while Jacob Kowalchik rapped a double. Chris Kester and Phil Engler each went two for four for the Rangers. Yankees 5 - Orioles 2 Tim Kerestes struck out six Orioles to record the victory for the Yankees. Frank Buzin struck out the side in the sixth to get the save. Nate Yoh's two hits and Jacob Kovalchik’s double pow- ered the Yankee offense. Jeremiah Taylor went two for three with a double for the Ori- oles. In addition, he struck out 10 Yankees during an impressive pitching performance. Tim Crossin tripled for the Orioles. Pirates 5 - Cardinals 4 Nick Horvath led the Pirates with two hits while Mark Yankowski powered the Cardinals with his sixth home run of the season and a triple. Greg Andrusisian was the winning pitcher. Yankees 10 - Tigers 7 Jeff Pace and Steve Fritz each went three for three, including a double, to lead the Yankee of- ‘fense. Jacob Kovalchik was two for three with a triple. Frank Buzin struck out 11 in five in- nings to get the win while Fritz struck out two in the sixth to record the save. For the Tigers, Chris Katyl was three for four with a double while David Sultz went two for two with a double. Phillies 5 - Cardinals 2 Mark Kapitula and Mark Yankowski engaged in a terrific pitchers duel. Kapitula struck out 12 and allowed only one hit to get the win. Yankowski struck out nine and surrendered only two hits. Brandon Burkhardt's triple was the only extra-base hit in the game. Giants 11 - Astros 4 Leading the Giants offense was Joel Mazer with two triples and a single, and Kevin Domzalski with two hits, including a home run. Ryan Ishley picked up the mound win. : The Astros offense was led by Phil Kurello with a solo home run and David Harrison with a triple. Giants 14 - Cardinals 2 Leading the hitting attack for the Giants was Kevin Domzalski with two home runs in the game, his 2nd and 3rd of the season. Also Joel Mazer belted out four hits, and Ryan Ishley collected two doubles. Ryan Ishley picked up the mound win. Leading the Cardinals offense was Mark Yankowski with a triple and Matt Straub with a single. Softball Majors ‘Yankees 14 - White Sox 1 Jodi Dickson had two hits, in- cluding a triple, to power the Yan- kee attack. Abby Fried scored four runs and Jamie Flack scored three for the winners. Fried was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts. : Megan Williamson had a double and Katie Rhodes struck out nine for the White Sox. Dodgers 12 - Phillies 9 Despite Alicia Dymond’s grand slam for the Phillies, the Dodgers won for the 11th time to remain undefeated. Alana Allan drove in three runs with two hits, includ- ing a triple, while her sister Nicole had a double and two RBIs. Abby Wasserott had a double and se- cured her sjxth victory on the mound. Keystone Games seeks ~ Teams are being sought to par- ticipatein the 1998 Keystone State Summer Games 7 vs. 7 soccer competition. The games will be held in Harrisburg, PA from July 29 through Aug. 2. The 7 vs. 7 soccer tournament includes the following divisions: age 18 and over Female (post high school), age 18 and over Male (post high school), age 30 and over Female, age 30 and over Male, and age 40 and over Male. All ages are determined as of July 31. There is a maximum of 12 players per roster. The team captain or contact must send in entry fee along with roster, team name and completed Summer Games individual entry forms and releases for each player on the roster. The entry deadline for 7 vs. 7 soccer is Wed., June 24. . The volleyball competition is team entry only, with one team per region in each division quali- teams for 7-vs-7 soccer fying for the finals. If only one team enters in a region for a spe- cific division then that team will go to the finals, however if there is more than one entry in a region in the same division then a qualify- ing event will be conducted by the regional sport coordinator. Try- outs will be held at Couglin High School, Wilkes-Barre, June 13, starting at 8 a.m. Age division for the volleyball competition include 16 and un- der female, 16 and under male, 18 and under female, 18 and un- der male, 19 and over female, and 19 and over male.
