8 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 10, 1998 Fields (continued from page 1) pool. Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18, in conjunction with Northeast In- termediate Unit 19, will hire six people to work as curriculum ex- perts to advise districts. The cost of the six experts is $158,000, of which Dallas will pay $9,000. The board took a break from the meeting to remember Char- lotte Williams, business manager, who lost a battle with cancer Sat- urday at 49 years ofage. “She was a good person, a good friend and colleague. She was a prudent business manager, who was fis- cally strong,” said Griffiths. “She will be sorely missed.” While Mrs. Williams was busi- ness manager, the district en- joyed a seven-year streak with no tax increase. He and three colleagues trav- eled to Charles University in Prague, which was celebrating its 650th anniversary, “to discuss current trends and issues in brain injury and rehabilitation for pro- fessionals in the field,” said Raymond. ~The group also held panel dis- cussions at Trnava University in Slovakia before returning home. For Raymond, it was extremely rewarding to pass on vital infor- mation that could help change the face of medicine in that coun- try. “The doctors there were very proud individuals, caring and dedicated. All of them were multi- specialty trained. For example, a neurologist is trained to be an internist first,” he said. The university hospital has CAT scans and MRI machines, but the doctors crave the newest and best equipment to help their patients. “They had an enormous de- sire to learn about advanced tech- nology. I think learning about it creates a burning desire and al- lows them to see what's out there. Some doctors plan on coming to the U.S. to train,” Raymond ex- plained. Raymond grew up in New Jer- sey and has lived in Dallas for 18 years. He graduated from the University of Scranton and Florida State and has worked at John ‘Heinz for 12 years. He has par- ticipated in other conferences in England. Service Tools ¢ Air Compressors * Welding Equipment “The doctors there were very proud individuals, caring ond dedicated. Dr. Michael Raymond : _ Dallas As director of the EN chological /Cognitive Service De- partment, Raymond has clinical responsibilities, is the primary consultant to the medical staff, and diagnoses and treats indi- viduals with documented or sus- pected brain injury. A brain in- jury can result from strokes, tu- mors and multiple sclerosis. He finds the field of brain in- jury challenging and never stag- nant. “It's always unpredictable and there is always the opportu- nity to learn more about the brain itself,” he said. Raymond and his colleagues did not teach alone; there were also doctors from Germany, Den- mark and Scotland. “There was mutual respect, even though we all have a different knowledge base of certain brain disorders. It was rewarding to share ideas. Hope- fully they'll absorb a bit of that information that will improve their patient care,” he said. It was not all work for the doc- tors. Raymond spent his sparse spare time with his wife, Carrie, visiting cathedrals and museums. They also tried the local cooking a few times. “They have good res- taurants, but they overindulge you with dumplings. I think all of us were looking forward to a good cheeseburger and milkshake.” Bn NAPA TOOLS & EQUIPMENT STORE/TRUCK SALE On Professional Quality Tools and Equipment Wednesday, June 10, 1998 8 a.m. - 7 P-M.
