They love the sport.” Jess Elston was a center midfielder for the Knights. “Be- cause were such a closely-knit team, that's why we got so far,” she said. The Knights faced Council Rock on Saturday to vie for the state title. “They were not as nervous as they were at the District fi- nals,” said Jan Elston. “We told them there was one more game, and win or lose, they deserved to be in the state final. We told them to play their hardest so they wouldn't have any doubts after about whether or not they could have played better.” Despite a 3-1 loss at the hands of the team ranked third in the nation, the players and coaches were extremely proud of their ac- complishment. “This season has been a very rewarding one being that we were the first team in the WVC tomakeit to the state games,” said Kasper. Winning Districts was the best part of the season for her. “It was awesome. To finally get there my senior year was prob- ably the highlight of the season.” Spencer said, “I never expected to go this far, and I was proud that we did.” Jan Elston explained that Lake- Lehman is a small AA school, with a graduating class of 154 and a no-cut policy. However, their op- ponent, Council Rock, is a AAAA school, with a class size of 800- 900 and tryouts for the team. “For a small AA school with its 29 members to be in a state final was monumental,” she said. “The teams of the past years have all been talented,” she added, “but each team was a stepping stone to this team. Going into this season, we were very excited and ready to play. Everybody had a personal goal they wanted to ful- fill. They knew that if they worked together and worked hard, they could surpass the previous team. All-of the girls should be proud of their accomplishment.” - “Holding up the runner-up state plague was totally sweet,” said Jess Elston. “It has definitely been the best season so far. It's, been an unbelievable experience.” Top photo: Tara Mintzer received her second place medal. The playoff grid, center.
