The money raised is donated to charities that the student council has selected. The students in eighth grade won the contest for a third year in a row. The middle school students raised $1,450. The money was equally divided between the Matt Rondina Fund and the United Way of Wyoming Valley. Ms. Norine Amesbury, student council advisor, stated that this was the most successful Penny War event held. Wiedlich earns 4.0 GPA at Misericordia Carl Wiedlich, a major in physical therapy, has achieved a 4.0 grade point average for the Fall semester of his senior year at College Misericordia, Dallas. He is the son of Herbert J. Wiedlich of Kingston and Marilyn Johnson of Shavertown. Carl will continue for a fifth year at College Misericordia to obtain his graduate degree. He will pursue a clinical placement in January in Vestal, New York. Kocher named to Who's Who Karen Ann Kocher, a senior accounting major at Shippensburg University was recently named to the 1998 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi fraternity, president of Institute of Management Accountants and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma national honor fraternity. The 1994 graduate of Lake-Lehman High School is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Kocher Jr., Pine Tree Rd., Dallas. Gina Storz graduates from Stroudsburg Gina Storz of Shavertown, received her B.S. degree from East Stroudsburg University at the Dec. 20, commencement exercises. Lopez-Medina graduates from Indiana U Nicole Lopez-Medina, daughter of Dr. Agapito Lopez and Sandral Medina of 6 Downing Drive, Dallas, recently graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Academy of Culinary Arts. The Academy is located in Punxsutawney, Pa. Lopez-Medina, a 1995 graduate of Dallas Senior High School, received a certificate for supervisory management, nutrition, and sanitation management while a student at the Academy. She also received a German wine certificate and an award for congenial- ity. Lopez-Medina, who graduated with honors, per- formed her externship in Carefree, AR at Boulders Resort. t IUP’s Academy of Culinary Arts recently received full accreditation by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute Accrediting Commission, the maximum accreditation pos- sible for new culinary programs in the United States. IUP is a member of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Educa- tion. Dallas middie outstanding students Recently an assembly was held at the Dallas Middle School to honor the outstanding academic students for the first marking period. Mr. Anthony Martinelli, Dallas Middle School principal, announced that 23 students achieved Honors With Distinction. To be eligible students must have a 3.8 to 4.0 average with no F or D grades. Seventh grade winners were Christian Cobleigh, Gabrielle Huh, Carolyn Thimot, Kristina Colladay, Matthew Katyl, Todd Kerestes, Adam Morgan, Corey Phillips, Rebecca Pincofski, and Stephanie Yeung. Students take a trip to the past Mrs. Mary Nulton’s third grade class at Dallas Elementary School recently traveled back in time to celebrate Christmas in the Middle: Ages. Mrs. Nulton invited Dr. Kathleen Kemmerer of Penn State Hazleton, a specialist in British ligerature, to vist the class. Dr. Kemmerer explained the history, culture and society of the Middle Ages. The class listened to recordings from the Fairfax manuscript, a document containing songs and music from the period. Each child created a stained-glass-window art project and decorated a knight's helmet. The children learned about knights and chivalry and about the tradition of Wassail, tasting mulled cider.
