Warrington scored three runs in both the first and second in- nings before Back Mountain could score a run. Amanda Stolarick drove home the lone run for Back Mt in the third. : Warren 6, Back Mt. 5 Back Mountain held on to a 5- 1 lead going into the sixth inning before Warren exploded for five runs in the final two innings to end Back Mountain's season with a 6-5 loss July 27. TEENER LEAGUE 14-15 Back Mt. 9, North Valley 3 Jayson Pope and Jake Rambus combined for five of Back ~ Mountain’s nine runs in a 9-3 » romp over North Valley July 24. Justin Kotarski slugged two hits for the victors. Jerry Long fanned nine and was credited with the win. WILKES-BARRE REC. Back Mt. 13, Heights Nat. 11 Ryan Gryskevicz scattered three hits including a home run to lead Back Mountain to a 13-11 victory over Heights in the 11-12 yr tournament July 23. Mike Fehlinger, Jon Barbose and John Simonitus ripped two hits apiece for Back Mountain. Back Mt. 6, Edwardsville 4 Back Mountain advances to the W-B Rec Tournament Champion- ship game against North Wilkes- Barre following a 6-4 victory over Edwardsville July 25. Mike Fehlinger belted two doubles for the spoilers. LOWER VALLEY 11-12 Hanover 6, Back Mt. Nat. 3 Back Mountain was unable to connect as Hanover struck out 11 Back Mt. batters in a 6-3 loss July 23. Nick Faillace and J.J. Sidorek supplied the only sparks to Back Mountain's line up with two singles apiece. Registration Aug. 2 for fall baseball Back Mountain baseball will hold a registration for fall baseball on Sat., Aug. 2, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the baseball field refreshment stand. Any candidates interested in playing baseball with league age 9-12 can register to play in the fall league. Also tickets will go on sale for the Sept. 7 banquet. Adult tickets are $12 and children tickets are $5. Metz competes in A.A.U. Championship Mike Metz of Dallas competed in the A.A.U. Grand National Wres- tling Championships held in Bakersfeld, CA on July 16-20. Metz wrestled in the Espoir Divison at 136.5 Ibs. in the Freestye & Greco- Roman wrestling styles. Metz wrestled his way to the championships rounds where he was crowned A.A.U. National Champion for both styles of the competition. Metz will continue his academic and wrestling career in the fall at King's College. Over the weekend they beat District 29 champs Mount Pocono 16-0 before falling to the District 20 champs of Northwest Bethlehem by a score of 5-4. On Monday the team rebounded with a 15-10 win over District 9 champs Christy Mathewson of Scranton. Back Mountain lost their bid for the championship with a 22-10 season ending loss to Northwest Bethlehem July 22. Back Mountain held a 6-4 lead after three innings before Bethlehem took control. Leading Back Mt.’s offense were Sam Lloyd, Lisa Wasser, Moly Guntli and Rachel Kukosky. Liz Samanas also rallied for a double. Kukosky took the loss. The team ends the post-season at 8-2. SPORTS SHORTS BMT National plays in Lower Valley tourney The Back Mountain National League Lower Valley All Star Team recently completed tournament play at Nanticoke and Northwest. At Northwest, Josh Wysocki had three singles while Daniel Katyl and Nick Grieves added hits in an 8-5 loss to Kingston. Nick Faillace had three hits and Ryan Kellager scored two runs in a 15-4 loss to Miners Mills. In the Lower Valley Tournament, Mountaintop defeated Back Mt. Nat. 12-6. Kevin Arnaud had two hits while Brett Sprau led the defense. Tyler Karalunas struck out nine batters and pitched a complete game as National topped Back Mt. American 6-4. Joe Liparela amd Ryan ‘Ishley led the defense. J.J. Sidorek had two hits and Chris Bertenelli led the defense as National fell to Hanover 6-3. Coaches for Back Mt. National were Ralph Wysocki, Bob Grieves, and Angelo Bertenelli. Manager was George Gracely. Bus trip to LL World Series There will be a bus trip to the Little League World Series in Williamsport on Mon., Aug. 18. Bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the Back Mountain Little League field and returns at 5:30 p.m.. Price is $12. Dallas Gridiron Club to host golf classic The Dallas Gridiron Club will be hosting the Mountaineer Golf Classic at the Four Seasons Golf Course on Sun., Aug. 10. Format will be Captain and Crew with an 8 a.m. Shotgun Start. Cost is $55 per person which includes golf, cart, food, drinks and prizes. A special drawing will be held with the grand prize being a King Cobra Titanium Driver. Hole sponsors are $50 each and all proceeds go directly to the football program. Swoyersville was led offensively by Justin Bozinko, who had 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Chris Mayerski hit a 1st inning homer. Matt Shedletsky and Remensnyder each collected 2 hits with one of Remensnyder’s being a double. Paul Connoly added 2 RBI's. For American Nate Yoh had a double and drove in 3 runs. He Struck out 4 over the final 4 1/3 innings. He also helped himself out by going 4-4 with a pair of runs scored Chris Katyl had four hits, includ- ing 2 doubles, 4 runs scored and 4 runs driven in. Jeff Pace singled ‘doubled and drove in a pair. Mike Darling and Frank Buzin each doubled. Pittston got doubles by Matt Granteed and Joey Leyshon. Jerry Darling took the loss. 7/29197 In the most exciting game of the tourney so far, Northwest de-.- feated Back Mountain American * 4-3 in extra innings to move on to’ face Plains in the losers’ bracket finals. Down by two runs in the. - sixth, Back Mountain got singles’ from Chris Katyl and Phil Engler: to put the tying run on base. Nate Yoh then drove in the second run for BMA and a wild throw let the tying run score. Frank Buzin then came on to strike out the side in the bottom of the sixth to put the’ game into extra innings BMA in the seventh got hits from Elijah | Miller and Chris Katyl, but stranded the runners on the cor- ners as Vince Scalzo, who came - on in the seventh to relieve ‘Brendon Evans, struck out three of the five batters he faced. Frank Buzin, who started the game for BMA, continued into the seventh giving up a double to Nate Buerger, his third hit and second double. Evans walked and Scalzo was in- tentionally walked to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, BMA managed to get the next two batters to hit into force plays at the plate. Brian Stempien then came to bat for Northwest and hit his second single of the game to drive in the winning run. Brendon Evans struck out seven and walked just three in six innings pitched for Northwest. Ryan Yaple also added a single and a double. Frank Buzin took the loss for BMA striking out four batters.
