Weaver also traveled to Bucknell University to accept state and regional awards. Canfield named outstanding ESU alumna Former local tennis standout Laura F. Canfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Canfield of Dal- las, is still in the game. Last month she was honored by East Stroudsburg University as an out- standing young alumna. The award, sponsored by the university's alumni association, recognizes graduates within the last 20 years who have achieved an extraordinary measure of success. Canfield, a tennis star while at Bishop O'Reilly, is executive direc- tor of the Middle States section of the United States Tennis Associa- tion (USTA), which is located in King of Prussia. Canfield also has the distinction of capturing back- to-back triple crowns (winning the singles, doubles and mixed events) in 1979 and 1980 at the annual Wyoming Valley Closed Tennis Tournament held in Kirby Park. After graduating from East Stroudsburg in 1981 with aB.S. in recreation and leisure services management, Canfield earned a LAURA CANFIELD - master of arts in sports admini- stration from the University of Massachusetts. Soon the USTA recognized Canfield’s talents. From 1985 to 1989 she directed the USTA Schools Program and Junior Player Development for the association’s Eastern section in White Plains, NY. Then in 1990 Canfield moved back “home” to head the USTA’s Middle States section, becoming one of the youngest executive di- rectors of a USTA section. Canfield was honored at the Second Annual Young Alumni Awards Banquet on Sunday, April 24, at Peppe’s Ristorante in East Stroudsburg. Gina Traver : » » selected L-L: student of the quarter The Lake Silkworth Area Lions recently honored Lake-Lehman High School student Gina Traver as Student of the Quarter. Traver and her parents were guests of the Lions at the Red Rooster Restaurant, where she was presented with a savings bond and a certificate in recognition of outstanding school and commu- nity achievement. Gina is a member of SADD, Student Council, National Honor Society, and editor of the school’s Literary Magazine.
