Breiseth and John Baron, Jr., President of the Wilkes University Alumni Association have “announced that William Mainwar- ‘ing, President, First Eastern Corp, and President and Chief Executive Officer, First Eastern Bank, N.A. and Captain Patricia A. Patrician of the US Army Nurse Corp have been selected as the winners of this year's outstanding alumni awards. Mainwaring will receive the Eugene S. Farley Memorial Alumni Award and Captain Patri- cian will be awarded the Distin- guished Young Alumnus Award at the University commcement cere- monies on Saturday, May 26, at 4 p.m. at Ralston Field in Ed- wardsville. In case of inclement weather the ceremonies will be moved inside the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. ~ Astherecipient of the Eugene S. Farley Memorial Alumni Award, the Nominations Committee of the University Alumni Association feels William R. Mainwaring epitomizes those characteristics of an edu- cated person that Dr. Farley cele- brated. Mainwaring, who lives in Shav- ertown, graduated from Wilkes in 1965 with a degree in Accounting and Finance and returned to earn his MBA in 1972. He has been employed by First Eastern Bank since 1965 and has attended the American Bankers Association Lending School at the University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. WILLIAM MAINWARING An active member of the com- munity, Mainwaring currently serves on the Committee for Eco- nomic Growth, the Board of Direc- tors of Mercy Hospital, the United Way of Wyoming Valley and as the Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the Board of Mercy Med-Care, Inc. He also serves as Treasurer and Board Member of the Citizen's Voice, Inc. Mainwaring ‘is a member of Masonic Lodge 468 of Wyoming Caldwell Consistory of Bloomsburg, Irem Temple and a member and Past President of theWyoming Valley Chapter, AIB. Kenneth Fox, Certified Professional Photographer and owner of Fox Studio, Wilkes-Barre, has earned distinguished recognition from his fellow professional photographers. His portraits of the Dr. Dan Davis Family, Lehman and Alex Lipko, Dallas, were awarded ribbons in a recent, regional competition of the Professional Photog- ~ raphers of America. The Davis family portrait was honored twice. It was judged to be the best in the Group category and was the highest scoring print in the overall competition. PEARMAN, PH.D. STEVEN D. PUTZEL, PH.D. Pearman named acting CEO at Penn State Willliam A. Pearman, Ph.D., has been named acting Campus Ex- ecutive Officer at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, effective July 1, according to an announcement today by Dr. Richard Grubb, sen- ior vice president and dean of the Commonwealth Educational Sys- tem of the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Pearman will re- place James H. Ryan, Ph.D., who has accepted an appointment as vice president of Continuing Edu- cation for the Penn State system. Dr. Pearman has served as di- rector of Academic Affairs at the campus since August of 1989. He previously served as provost and vice president of the academic af- fairs at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Dr. Grubb also announced that the position of acting Director of Academic Affairs will be filled by Steven D. Putzel, Ph.D. assistant professor of English. Dr. Grubb added that a search committee will be established and a national search will be conducted for a permanent replacement for the CEO's post. Dr. Pearman completed his undergraduate studies at La Salle University in 1962, and received a master's degree in socilogy/anthro- pology at Fordham University in 1964, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. Dr. Pearman lives in Dallas, has been recognized for teaching ex- cellence by the Danforth Founda- tion and received the first Pennsyl- vania Sociological Society Award for Research Excellence. Dr. Putzel has held the post of assistant professor of English at Penn State Wilkes-Barre since 1988, and was named head of the English program in 1989. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1980 and was awarded several research grants and fellowships. An expert in modern British and Irish literature, modern drama, folklore and mythology, Dr. Putzel most recently published an article in the prestigious “Journal of Dramatic Theory & Criticism” on Sam Shepard, playwright, rock musician and popular cult figure. Dr. Putzel is married to Suzanne Westfall who is an assistant pro- fessor of English and theater at Layfayette College. Campbell, director of Continuing Education for Penn State Wilkes-Barre, was a featured presenter at the Association for Continuing Higher Education Quadregional Conference in Beth- lehem on April 23. Campbell discussed the field of continuing education and the re- sponsibility of educators to pro- - vide leadership development op- portunities. He reflected on his recent participation in Harvard University's Management of Life- long Education (MLE) program, an intensive program for senior ad- ministrators concerned with the design and implementation of life- long learning programs. In addition to his duties as di- rector of Continuing Education at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Cambell is Penn State's regional director for Continuing Education in the north- east section of the state, which involves the overall coordination and supervision of continuing education programs and person- nel in an 11 county area serviced by the Hazleton, Worthington- Scranton, Schuylkill and Wilkes- Barre campuses of Penn State. enrollment in the Penn State sys- tem. Nancy Carey, the Outreach Program coordinator, was honored at a luncheon in the facility's rec- reation room. Certification requires a mini- mum of two years experience in rehabilitation nursing and com- pletion of a detailed national ex- amination which tests abroad base of clinical knowledge. Carey joined the Heinze Insti- tute staffin 1984. She has worked in the Institute's Head Trauma Unit since 1985 and has been Outreach Program coordinator since March 1989.
