Gretchen Schuler, Kelly Cleary and T. Terescavage picked up three wins each and Monique Matthews, Ann Smaka, Ann Baluh and Egly had two wins each to help the girls win the tri-meet. Dallas took the 3200m relay, 1600m relay and Smaka won the 100m hurdles, 200m dash and Cleary won the 400m dash, a leg of the 1600m relay and a leg of the 3200 relay. Schuler came in first in the 3200m and 1600m runs and ran a leg of the 3200m relay. Terescavage won the 800m run, and ran a leg of the 3200m and 1600m relays. Monique Matthews took the 100m hurdles and ran a leg of the 400m run. Other Dallas girls placing in the first five were T. Yurko, Smaka, Dzury, Monica Matthews, Baluh, Eyet, Dzanko, Landon, Egly, Marino, Shone and Froncek. Dallas girls take Spartans 14-1 Laura Poynton led the Lady Mountaineers to a 14-1 rout of Valley West throwing a three hitter while striking out three and walking two on Monday. Poynton also drove out a long three base hit sending home three runs. The win moved the Mountaineers record to 8-1. ~ Dallas boys edged by Tigers Dallas boys dropped to 4-6 in the AAA standings Monday when they lost a close 3-1 game to Tunkhannock. Pitcher Scott Davies held the Mountaineers scoreless for six innings while his teammate, catcher Ed Mason knocked out three hits one of them a homerun to lead the Tigers to the win and run their record to 8-1. Mason also picked up a pair of RBI's in the game. ~ Bob Ashworth went six innings on the mound for the Mountaineers striking out eight and walking only four. Alex Case had three of Dallas’ six hits, one of them a double. Mounts E. Paczewski and Catcher Kaiser also had doubles for Dallas. Case pitched the final inning striking out one. Warriors down Dallas 8-4 Wyoming Area defeated the Dallas Mountaineers 8-4 last Tuesday to remain half a game behind league-leading Tunkhannock in the AAA West Division. Ray Pascoe went the full way for the Warriors striking out four and walking five and giving up seven hits. Jude Donato and Ron DeLuca wer the power hitters at the plate for the Warriors. Ray Russin hit op doubles and Alex Case drove out a triple for the Mountaineers. B. Miller pitched for Dallas striking out three and walking five. He gave up 11 hits. Dallas spikers defeat GAR 2-0 Dallas volleyball players clinched a place in the playoffs last Wedne sday by defeating GAR 15-3, 15-2 and finished the season 9-3. Dave Zachary led the Mountaineers with nine points and Eric Nardone and Ned Palka led with kills. Dallas girls softball wins two After pitching a perfect game last Monday against Pittston, Laura Poynton came back Tuesday and pitched a two-hitter against Berwick for a second consecutive shutout as Dallas defeated the Bulldog girls 4- 0. The win kept Dallas tied with Wyoming Area at 6-1. Poynton walked five and struck out two in the game. Catcher Melanie Langdon aided the Mountaineers to a 2-0 lead in their first times at bat. Langdon scored a run and drove in two runs. Molly Connolly hit a single in the third inning, stole second and scored on Langdon’s RBI. Stephanie Andrasko scored the final run for Dallas in the fifth inning when she ~ went to first on a walk, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a ground out after stealing third. Dallas defeated Tunkhannock 10-1 Thursday afternoon with Laura Poynton on the mound. Poynton hurled a three-hitter, walking two and striking out two and helped win her own game by knocking out a three- run single in the first inning. Theresa Mathers went 3-for-3 for the Dallas girls who collected eight hits and stole eight bases. Molly Connolly had a single and a double 2- for-3 in the game. Dallas girls soccer moves to 8-0 Dallas girls soccer team remained undefeated Thursday after edging Bishop Hoban 3-1 in two mandatory overtimes. Jennifer Besecker scored both goals in the overtime periods for Dallas. Besecker is the league's leading scorer and she hit the first winning goal from 10 yards out in the first overtime period. Wendy Hozempa scored the first goal in the game in the first period to give Dallas a 1-0 lead but Hoban’s Beth O'Hara made it 1-1 when she scored off an assist by Tiffany George in the first. Besecker scored her second goal in the second overtime period on a direct kick which went off the fingers of Hoban's goalkeeper. Both teams played outstanding defense. Earlier in the week, the Dallas girls shut out Tunkhannock 5-0 paced by Besecker's hat trick in the third period. Wendy Hozempa gave Dallas their first score when she scored unassisted in the second period. After Besecker's three goals in the third, Amy Mannear scored unassisted in the fourth period. Dallas track men win one of three meets The Dallas cindermen defeated Hazleton 78-72 last Tuesday behind multiple wins by Dave Podehl, Steve Oliver, Sam Jayne, Dave Dover and Brian Smith. Podehl won the 100m dash, 400m run, and ran a leg of the 1600m relay. Oliver took the 1600m run and ran a leg of the 3200m relay. Jayne won the shotput and tied for first in the discus while Dover ran a leg of - the 1600m and and the 3200m relays. Other first place winners were Clothier, VanOrden, Smith, Jones, Lehman and Morris. Placing among the top five were VanOrden, Rogers, Jones, Morris, Williams, Jayne and Labbate. The Mountaineers lost two meets in the tri-meet with Crestwood and Bishop Hoban Thursday afternoon. Dallas lost to the Comets 95-55 and to Bishop Hoban 89 1/2-60 1/2. Oliver, Dover, Morris and Smith were double winners for the Mountaineers. They were first place winners in the 3200m relay, 1600m run, 800m run, 3200m run and 1600m relay. Placing in the top five were Morris, Smith, Dover, Oliver, Williams, VanOrden, Podehl, Rogers, Jones, Clothier, Kunar, Lehman, James and Litz. Dallas girls defeat Hazleton 72-69 Dallas girls won their Hazleton track meet 72-69 behind four wins by Gretchen Schuler and three by Ann Smaka who set a school record in the 300 hurdles Tuesday. Schuler came in first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs and was a member of the winning 3200m relay team. Smaka took the 300 hurdles with a time of 17.0, 110m hurdles and the 200m dash. Andrea Shone took a second and three thirds for the Lady Mountaineers. Other girls in the top five for Dallas were Baluh, Terescavage, Cleary, Monica Matthews, Monique Matthews, Yurko, Egly, Froncek. Straigis will continue his career at Wilkes Dallas High School football star Jay Straigis has announced his intentions to continue his academic and athletic career at Wilkes Uni- versity this fall. Straigis, a 6’3, 190 pound quar- terback, passed forover 1100 yards and 9 touchdowns in helping the Mountaineers to an 8-2 mark in the Wyoming Valley Conference. ‘In addition to being the quarter- back, Straigis also played defen- sive back, intercepting one pass on the year. A two year starter and letter winner for coach Ted Jackson, Straigis was named to the confer- ence all-star team and was re- cently selected to play in the an- nual UNICO football classic at Wyoming Area High School. "Straigis, who will study account- ing, chose Wilkes over Delaware Valley and Lycoming. “I like the fact that Wilkes has a new coach (Joe DeMelfi) and that I will have a chance to play since everyone is at ground zero,” said Straigis. “I'm also looking forward to the fact that Wilkes is playing one of its games at Lackawanna County Stadium. It should be a real thrill.” Wilkes coach Joe DeMelfi is excited about having Siraigis at . Wilkes. “Jay comes from a very good program out at Dallas,” said the first year coach. “He should do very well on the collegiate level.” Wilkes will play its October 6 game with Wesley College at the Lackawanna County Multi-Pur- pose Stadium. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. Staigis is the son of John and Peggy Straigis of Dallas. Little League opens season Back Mountain Baseball offi- cially opened its 1990 season Sat- urday, April 28. Pastor Harriet Santos delivered the invocation and reflected on her days of baseball with her children and the dedication of parents. The Little League pledge was read by Maria Wright, Gwen Langdon, Blake Bicking and Larry Lettie Jr. Donald Berlew, vice president and player agent introduced Presi- dent Larry Lettie who introduced the officers for 1990 season as follows: Vice President Player Agent, Don Berlew; Vice President Softball, Joe Sallitt; Vice President Minors, Carlo Santerelli; Vice Presi- dent T-Ball, Mary Wright; Vice President Grounds, Barry West; Vice President Equipment, Bob Bullock; Vice President Sponsors, Frank Natitus; Secretary, Mark Sowick and Treasurer, Bob Rodg- ers. Lake-Lehman sports roundup Knights take 14-4 game from Seminary The Black Knights erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning of their Cherup will play at Delaware Marvin Antinnes, Athletic Director for Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston, announced recently that Jay Cherup will play football at the University of Delaware in the fall. Cherup is the son of Mr. John Cherup, Dallas, and played quarter- back and defensive back at Seminary. The 6°3", 195 pounds post- graduate will attend the University of Delaware. DENMON Staff Writer Joyce Tinner, student at Penn State University Main Campus was recently named Atlantic 10 ‘Player of the Week’ as starting second baseman for the university's team. She batted .385 with 10 hits including three doubles and a triple. A sophomore, Joyce ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 in batting with a .349 average and is first in doubles with eight and second in triples with three. She is second in slug- ging with .518 percent. The university is 6-2, third in the league and 17-11 overall. Joyce is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Tinner of Haddonfield Hills, Dallas. She graduated from Dallas High School where she was an excellent athlete and an out- standing softball player where she played in the infield. Knight Troy Strausser hit a two-run homer and Kris Bowman knocked out a two run single in the fourth inning to give the Knights a 13-4 lead going into the fifth inning. They scored a final run in the fifth on Sam Gorgone's single. James was credited with the win pitching four innings striking out five and walking three. Gorgone struck out one in the fifth. The game was halted after the fifth under the 10-run rule. Lake-Lehman girls track wins one, lose one In the tri-meet with Valley West and Coughlin Monday, the Lady Knights bowed to Valley West 110-30 but took Coughlin 91-33. Michelle Naugle and Lori Recek paced the Lady Knights to their win. Naugle took the 100m dash followed by Recek. She also took the 200m dash and Recek won the 400m run. Frederick took the long jump. Others placing in the top five were Sandstrom, Marcin, McHenry, Radley, Billington, Yeager and McDonald. The Knights also placed second in the 3200m relay, 400m relay and 1600 relay. Knights take volleyball title - again Coach John Baranowski's Black Knights won another Wyoming Valley Conference volleyball title Friday when they defeated North Pocono on the Pocono court. The Knights had to regain their confidence after they bowed 15-6 to North Pocono in the first game. They proved that defeat didn't get them down in the second game sparked by John Baranowski Jr.'s spiking, Matt Kukosky's setting and Ben Haughney's stellar playing. The Knights were behind 3-0 in the early part of the third game but Baranowski hit five straight points and the Knights went in front 6-5 after Pocono had added two more. Baranowski and Haughney's play made certain the Knights took the third game. The Knights lost the first games 6-15 but won the second and third 15-7 and 15-6. They will go into the playoffs first seed and North Pocono will be second seed. Earlier in the week the Knights defeated Abington Heights 2-0 taking the first two games 15-6, 15-2. Mike Doerfler scored eight points to lead his team in defeating the Comets. Baseball loses to Bishop Hoban Lake-Lehman'’s boys baseball team dropped to 6-2 last Wednesday when they lost to Bishop Hoban 6-2 while the Argents remained undefeated at 8-0. Argents pitchers Ray Reilly and Brian Kopec teamed up for a five hitter in defeating the second place Black Knights. Ray Strish drove out a two-run double and was on base four times in the game and Mark Rogers drove out a homerun. J.J. Konigus hit a double for the Knights. Sam Gorgone dropped to 2- 2 on the mound fanning three and walking five in six innings. Girls soccer loses to Seminary The Lady Knights played Wyoming Seminary shot for shot in soccer and outscored the Blue Knights on corners but were unable to score a goal as the Seminary girls shut them out 3-0 in last Tuesday's soccer game. Amy Trynoski scored the first goal for Seminary in the first period and scored a second in the second period. Karen Cera scored the third Seminary goal unassisted in the third period. Lady Knights win 10-1 Karen Stefanowicz and Cherub Honeywell teamed together to give the Knights a one-hitter game from the mound. Stefanowicz picked up the win with Honeywell coming in as relief in a 10-1 over Seton Catholic. Tracy Krupa and Wendy Skibitsky were the power hitters at the plate both of them driving out triples.
