\ The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 25, 1989 11 SPORTS Dallas wins two straight to end first half on a high note By Charlot M. Denmon Staff Writer It took his Mountaineers most of the first half of the season to gain the confidence and experi- ence they needed to play as a team. But in the past 2 1/2 weeks Dallas Coach Clarence Ozgo's cagers have basketball, feeling better about it and winning. Prior to last week the Mounts Bo playing a better brand of lost some games they should have won, games that were decided by a few bad breaks. Last week, they played with great team effort and defeated Berwick and Hazleton. “I have been happy with the way they've been improving for the past couple of weeks,” said Coach Ozgo. “This past week was extremely good for them. They know now that they can win and they're feeling better about themselves. “Berwick is not a bad team; they are 4-4 and have a makeup game with Wyoming Area this Thursday which if they win means they could be 5-4. One of those losses was to "We may surprise some teams in the second half” Clarence Ozgo Dallas coach us. I believe our kids surprised them. Now that our boys are play- ing better, if they continue we may surprise more teams the second half,” Ozgo concluded. This week the Mountaineers open the second half with Hazle- ton, the team that took the first half with an undefeated 14-0 rec- ord overall and 9-0 in league. They're tough, but Ozgo is hoping his boys will play better against them this time than they did last. The Dallas team has had some injuries and illness but things should be looking up. In the Mountaineers 84-71 win over Tunkhannock, Brett Gauntlett scored a career high 32 points to lead Dallas to its second consecu- tive win in league play. Matt McQuide tossed in 18, Ray Russin putin 14, two of them three-point- ers and Randy Coolbaugh added 12. Dallas took a 43-38 lead at halftime and never looked back. With only seconds left in the Berwick game, Berwick was lead- ing 51-50 when Ray Russin put in a driving shot and Randy Coolbaugh blocked Jake Kelchner's rebound attempt to save the win for the Mountaineers. Dallas suffered from poor shoot- ing in the first half and the Bull- dogs led 28-16 at the half. In the ‘second half, Dallas played intense defense and outscored Berwick 36- 23. Matt McQuide was high scorer for Dallas with 16 points, Coolbaugh hit 11, Jim Lister had 10, one of them a three-pointer. Dallas hit five for 10 from the foul line, Berwick went seven-for-13. By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The Lake-Lehman boys basketball team defeated Crestwood 59-56 and Meyers 61-41 last week to finish in fourth place in Division II of the Wyoming Valley Conference despite a makeup game with Bishop O'Reilly this past Tuesday.
