David Cummings is seven David John Cummings, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cummings, Dallas, celebrated his seventh birth- day on December 12. In celebration a party was held at Rollaway Skat- ing Center, Dallas. Friends and rela- tives attended. David is a first grader at Dallas Intermediate School, Mrs. Roeders class. Thomas to chair association Jack Thomas, executive vice president of Commonwealth Tele- phone Company, Dallas, has been appointed chairman of the board of the Pennsylvania Telephone Asso- ciation (PTA). ‘Headquartered in Harrisburg, the PTA represents 41 local exchange carrier telephone companies. Mem- bers of the association employ over 26,000 Pennsylvanians and provide telecommunications service to 5.9 million access lines in all 67 Penn- sylvania counties. As executive vice president of Commonwealth, Thomas is respon- sible for all telephone operations, customer service, development and marketing of basic, enhanced and new services and the upgrading of network capability and performance. Thomas is a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engi- neering and has completed the Harvard Business School's Program for Management Development. He js a member of the Separations and Analysis Committee of the United David John Cummings Jack Thomas States Telephone Association and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advi- sory Board, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Back Mountain Citizens’ Council, Dallas. Richard Laux announces early retirement as United Penn Chief Richard F. Laux, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of United Penn Bank, has announced his early retirement from the Bank, effective December 31, 1988. Mr. Laux is taking early retire- ment because, in his words, “Hav- ing attained the highest position in the organization, and having guided it through a period of unparalleled growth and innovation, I feel that the time has come for me to actively pursue a variety of other interests.” Laux’s retirement does not mean the end of his affiliation with the bank, since he will continmue to serve on its Board of Directors. In the course of a 35-year bank- ing career which began with a Ft. Lauderdale Florida Bank, Lauxrose steadily to positions of ever-increas- ing responsibility. He joined United Penn in 1957 as Assistant Cashier, and in 1980 was elected to the posi- tion of President and Chief Execu- tive Officer. In 1984 he was elected Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer.
