Ne ~ Fe. > ® The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, December 21, 1988 13 ; SPORTS By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer totally outplayed by a very fine team,” Dallas coach Clarence Ozgo said after Hazleton trounced his Moun- taineers 82-35 last Friday night. “In my 14 years of coaching I have never seen a finer high school team; they are eight or nine kids deep with no weaknesses. If they're to be de- feated it will be a stroke of luck.” Ozgo said his athletes are down now after the big loss to Hazleton but it's his job now to get them up. “There are 19 games remaining and one game doesn’t make a sea- son. We have a great bunch of kids and they are trying hard. We will continue to build them for the fu- ture and put together the proper harmony, unity and chemistry. The kids showed what they could do in the game with Northwest,” Ozgo said. The Mountaineers defeated Northwest 51-50 Tuesday in an “Our kids were totally outclassed, Nanticoke and Wyoming Area next Dallas to face two tough games after 47 point loss to Hazleton "We will continue to build them for the future and put together the proper harmony, unity and chemistry." Clarence Ozgo Dallas coach exhibition game, pulling out the win on Brett Gauntlett’s two point goal in the final two seconds of the game. The Rangers tried for a two-pointer after Gauntlett’s score but Pete Lanza's shot fell short of the net. The Rangers had several re- bounds but were unable to convert and the Mountaineers came off the court with the 51-50 win. Randy Coolbaugh has been play- ing some good basketball in the pre- season games and hit for 14 points. Ray Russin had the best game of his career with 15 points, some of them on excellent shots from the perime- ter. Matt McQuide, E. Nardone and M. Farris have also been improving and playing some good ball, coach Ozgo said. The Mountaineers play Nanticoke and Wyoming Area this week and Ozgo knows the boys have to go in with the right attitude. Ozgo said Nanticoke is a team with a long winning tradition. They lost several players to graduation, but they still have some fine shoot- ers. They are not a big squad but play hard and Dallas can't take them lightly. They are good athletes and have a lot of pride. Wyoming Area has 6'8" 250 pound Chris Wickizer, who has been play- ing since ninth grade and the Moun- taineers will have to stop him if they aret to win. The Warriors also have Steve Orloski, a good shooter, and one of the best offensive players in the league. Dallas will have to play hard to contain Orloski and keep Wickizer off the boards. DENMON Staff Writer “Our kids played ‘hard in the games with Bishop Hafey and North- west this week but their shooting is off. They are still off on their shots from the foul line,” said Lake- Lehman cage coach Rodger Bearde after his Knights lost both games last week. “If we play as hard against Seton Catholic and Hanover this week, we should win. Our kids are bigger and can play a tight defense and the Eagles should be down from last year. They have one good athlete back, that’s Pritchyk on the inside. Gubbiotti is also a good athlete. “Hanover lost seven players from last season and are in a rebuilding year. If our kids play up to their capabilities, they should win. We'll see,” Bearde said. The Knights had an opportunity to win in the Bishop Hafey game which the Knights lost 49-46. They played well on defense and put some strong pressure against Bishop Hafey but the Knights shooting was off. The Hafey team has four starters .. back from last season and although the Knights took Hafey's Dudek out of the game, they couldn't stop Mahasky who made some excellent shots from the floor and went five for seven from the foul line. The Knights couldn't guard at the . beginning of the game and let the Vikings get too far in front in the first five minutes of the game. The Knights were also cold in their shooting and dropped behind. They missed nine of 21 from the foul line. Northwest has a good team but Bearde said his Knights should have won if they played as hard against the Rangers as they did against the Vikings. “We're going to have to continue working on our shooting,” Bearde said. e LAB e EKG » Diagnostic Services A.
