3 Owner hopes to reopen restored Beaumont Inn in time for holidays By CHARLOT M. DENMON If all goes according to schedule, arenovated Beaumont Inn willopen for business prior to the Thanksgiv- ing holiday. James Harkins of Penn State Seed Company, owner of the 40-year-old inn which was for years a popular restaurant hotel where local resi- dents enjoyed many delicious din- ners, receptions and other social functions, isrestoring the Beaumont Inn. He plans toredo it as similar as possible to its decor in the 1940's. It was in June, 1947, that Peter Masonis of Luzerne, owner of Ma- sonis Cafe, purchased the 55-acre of land along Route 309 between Kunkle and Beaumont. Masonis constructed the large brick building overlooking the high- way which included 15 guest rooms for tourists on the second floor, a large banquet room, grill, kitchen, bar and restrooms on the first floor in less than a year. He held a grand opening of the Beaumont Inn in <arch, 1948. The inn specialized in steaks and lobster tails and soon became popu- lar for its variety of home-cooked foods. It also became the ‘place’ to hold wedding receptions, banquets. and dinner dances as well as clam- . bakes and picnics in a grove on the property. The diningroom accommodated 225 people which was among the first of its kind in the Back Moun- tain area. The guest rooms on the second floor became favorites with tourists using Route 309 to travel to New York and Canada and became popular as the halfway mark for many motorists. In 1956 Masonis decided to retire from business and sold the inn to Joseph and Constantine Vaskas. The Vaskas brothers continued to operate the inn until June, 1957, when they retired and sold the prop- erty to James Harkins. During the time the Vaskas broth- ers owned Beaumont Inn, Joseph married the former Ruth Masonis, Peter's daughter. Ruth and Joseph live in their home located across the highway from the inn. For years the owners continued to feature and serve the same kind of dinners, Masonis had in earlier years. As often happens, with more restaurants locating in the Back Mountain area, the inn dropped in popularity and the Vaskas family served fewer dinners and catered to less and less receptions and ban- quets. Harkins explained that he is not changing the decor of the inn but is renovating it to make it more effi- cient and to restore the second floor accommodations. Over the years the upstairs guest rooms were replaced by two five- room apartments and Harkins is having the upstairs remodeled so there will be 10 guest rooms with individual baths. “We are trying to keep the build- ing as much the same as it was originally both inside and out,” Harkins said. “John Rolfe of Eng- land will be manager-chef. He plans to feature international cuisine with emphasis on seafood. “We also plan to operate the inn as Peter Masonis did during the years it became the most poplar dining place in the Back Mountain. If our venture is the success we expect it to be, we will probably expand in the future,” Harkins concluded. Ruth Masonis Vaskas said she is happy to see the inn being remod- eled and is looking forward to it becoming the popular place it was for many years. “I am happy it was purchased by someone like James Harkins, who is interested in bringing the inn back to the people in this area,” Mrs. Vaskas said. : Watch for the opening of the new Beaumont Inn-it may be just the place to enjoy holiday dinner.
