The amounts received and disbursed this year are excep {tionally large on account of the school bond issue. The treasurer's | report also showed that the $10,000 | which was borrowed of the First best men of the companies should | be situated so as to assist in fights | ing fire rather than to patrol the fire district with practically nothing | to do. A motion was carried requesting the police committee of the council to appoint the fire | police, and in connection therewith suggested that the fire police be composed of the regular force and also the special officers. A motion carrying with it a proposition to pay the chief of the fire department a remuneration for his services was voted down, it being the sense of the board that if one of the department officers was paid and the others were com- pelled to work gratis it would create dissatisfaction that would ultimately work to the detriment of the department. The question of stimulating in- terest in the department was taken up and discussed at length, and the present fire alarm system also came in for considerable attention. It was the sense of the members of the board that an inducement of some character should be offered to the men in order to insure prompt response at fires. During the discussion of the question it developed that the firemen were opposed to the present alarm system. The men claim that the whistle is not heard at certain times and that when they want to use the telephone to ascertain where a blaze is located the line is busy. E. All were genuine uttering a silent supplication to let the object of their search be a iong Brown, who is making his fourth stellar tour, is perhaps the most notable as well as gratifying. His appearances have invariably been greeted with unusual acclaim and upon his engagement here Wed- nesday afternoon and evening, Jan- uary 1oth he will be found sur- rounded with all the advantages that make a successful popular priced engagement. The plays selected for the engagement here include “The Christian” for the matinee and “Shannon of the Sixth" at night. “The Christian” needs no com- ment to introduce it to theatre goers. “Shannon of the Sixth" is a powerful military romance, and shows the inner life of the British army in far away India. Popular prices will prevail for this engagement. EE ——— i ————— SUSPECT UNDER ARREST Willis Crawford is under arrest at Laporte, charged with being im- plicated in the murder of Mrs. Sarah Whitmire, near Muncy Val- ley recently. He will be given a hearing today. He maintains his innocence and says that he can prove a complete alibi. The county commissioners of Sullivan county have decided to increase the reward for the woman's murderer or murderers from $200 to $500. This step was taken in compliance with the almost unani- mous demand of the people, who express the hope that a larger reward will stimulate activity on the part of police authorities in this section. EAGLES 10 WEET The regular meeting of the Eagles will be held on tomorrow evening at which time several can- didates will be initiated into the mysteries of the order and the officers recently elected will also be installed. All members are requested to be on hand promptly at 7:30 o'clock, HOSE COMPANY MEETING There will be a special meeting of the J. E. Wheelock hose com: pany in Milltown on Sunday after- noon at 3 o'clock for the purpose | paid. | President Thompson stated that he would see former Secretary Adam and secure the remainder of the board's books The board decided to purchase 40 copies of Bergen's Elements of Botany for use in the schools. A report was received to the effect that the high school building and the new building in West Sayre had been fumigated yester- day. A matter concerning conditions during noon hour in the West Sayre school was reported to the board. It appears that there are a number of pupils from the east side who have been transferred to the new building and that on account of the distance they are compelled to bring their dinner with them. The teacher in the fifth grade takes her dinner at home and while she is gone her pupils are left alone with no one in authority to manage them. Recently, it is said, the janitor of the school gathered them in one of the play rooms and then locked the door during the noon hour. The children did not relish the confinement and some one of them, who is at present unknown, broke the lock on the door. The mem. bers of the school board were somewhat indignant over the report and will take strenuous measures to prevent its recurrence. BUSINESS MEN'S MEETING The business men’s association will hold a meeting this evening, at which time they will be ad- state organizer of business men's associations. Mr. Rittenhouse is well qualified to speak on the sub-~ ject, and will have many interest. ing and instructive matters to bring to the attention of the members of the local organization. A full at- tendance is desired. COUNTY COMMITTEE MEET The Republican county commit- tee met in Towanda yesterday and fixed the date for holding the convention on February 1, 1906. After his conviction the con- demned man’s attorneys, Lilley & Wilson of Towanda, appealed from the decision to the supreme court and that body handed down a decision yesterday afternoon grants ing a new trial, Chief Justice Mitch- ell dissenting. The new trial was granted on the grounds that certain evidence was presented and admit- ted at the tral which was of an admissable nature. GEORGE PAINTON, 345 Broad Sreet, | Both Phones. £1 Christ are looking to their annual business meeting with an unusual degree of interest this year. To- night, Wednesday, at 7:30 this meeting occurs. Among the things which makes this meeting of more than ordinary interest are the following: Calling of the roll of membership, reports of all depart- ments, and the burning of the church mortgage. Several absent members have already sent letters to be read at the meeting There seems to be a general feeling that the year just ended has been the most prosperous in the history of the church. WILL GIVE SMOKER The Firemen's Relief association will hold a smoker in the Packer hose rooms this evening and all members of the department in good standing and also the mem bers of the fire board are especially requested to attend.
