Game Warden Ran Into the Wrong Bunch at Laceyville Thursday Night--Was Slapped in the Face and Otherwise Roughly Handled Amid the indignant hisses and jeers of a carload of: passengers Game Warden Shoemaker, whose zeal to punish violators of the fish and game laws has earned the just contempt of every sportsman in this section, was ejected from the Lehigh Valley evening local near Laceyville on Thursday might, after by a Wilkesbarre hunter whom he had attempted to scarch for ferrets The latest escapade of this over- offizious game warden is an inter- [esting tale, and if he is possessed of even an atom of ordinary com- mon sense he will not repeat it. Thursday evening party of Wilkesbarre hunters boarded the evening local near Wryalusing. The party was quite a large one and the day had been <peat in the woods near Wyalusing hunting for small game. Wh:n the train rcached Laceywille, Shoemaker boarded the coach occupied by the hunting party. With no other auth ority than his badge he imme- diately began a scarch to ascertain ifany of the men were carrying ferrets. He did not proceed far One of the Wilkesbarre men, a big husky fellow, slapped Mr. Shoe- maker in the face and the sound made by the blow was heard throughout the entirc car Fora moment it looked as ifthe other mumbers of the party might also play a tat-too on the game ward- e's brazen cheeks, but just as mat ters looked serious th of the train, who is an infant, told the a conductor anything but obstreperous was thrown out bodily. retreat. and jeered and hurled epithets at the discomfitted warden that were not of a complimentary nature. When the hunting party reached | Wilkesbarre they were met by two | game wardens for that section. | They tried to “butt in" but were brushed one side and the hunting | party reached their homes without | incident. In the meantime decided to seek Shoemaker division, stating that he had been ejected from one of the company's trains and demanded that some- thing be done about it. The “silver shower reception” held last night for the benefit of the Church of Christ in West Sayre was one of the largest simi- lar events that had been held in this section in a long time. The | reception was held in the church and the people responded nobly. | A literary and musical program of rare excellence was rendered to a large and delighted audience, fol- lowing which the ladies of the church served refreshments to over 800 people. The receipts of the evening amounted to £98 38, and this sum will be used to apply on the church debt. It will reduce the debt nearly one-half. The success of the entertainment both socially and financially is due to the indefatigible efforts of the lad- ies of the church and they are re- ceiving many compliments for the able manner in which all the de tails were carried out. The con- testing teams were to have been the Sayre Athens combination and an eleven from Waverly. The game failed to materialize, and the Sayre players say that the fault lies with the aggregation from Waver- ly, or rather with its management. When the arrangements were made for the game the managers of the Sayre Athens team say that they guaranteed the Waverly bunch a certain sum, including expenses, etc, which at the time was appar- ently satisfactory. The game was advertised in the newspapers and an order for hand bills was in the hands of a job printer, but before it was executed the Sayre players claim that the Waverly artists “welshed” That is, they came to Sayre and wanted more moncy as a guarantee. The amount they asked for represented a sum twice the onginal guarantee and the management of the Sayre aggrega- tion wouldn't stand for ®t. They thought it large enough and it the Waverly wanted a game on the original terms they could have it. The Waverly team, how- ever, persisted in their demands, and the upshot is that lovers of the national game were deprived this afternoon of witnessing an exciting contest. players The Sayre players are inclined to think that Waverly wanted to crawl out and that demanding more money as a guarantee was an crawfish. In fact the local team make no bones of acus- ing the Waverly outfit of being afraid. Waverly, however, will strenuously deny this allegation and will say that they wanted a guarantee sufficient to make them JANES DUGGAN James Duggan, 77 years old, died this morning at 4:30 o'clock at his residence, No 112 North Hopkins street, after a long illness He had been afflicted with valvular heart trouble for some years and for the past two weeks had been in a critical condition.
