Mr. Charles E. Smith, editor of the Philadelphia Press, who left the Albany Journal when it ceased to be a Conkling organ, said recently, wheu asked why he now supports the President: "I have always liked Mr. Conkling, ancl have been distressed at some of the severe criticisms upon him, but I could not de fend his action in resigning from the Senate, and in this community there is hardly a man to he found who sustains him. I had already made a sacrifice for him, and left the State of New York on his account. I must think for myself and not be governed in my judgment by Mr. Conkling's extravagant acts." The first attempt at iron smelting in California was made about a year ago and has already passed the experimental stage. A large bed of available hematite at Clip per Gap, iu Placer county, was opened at that time, and the more it is worked the bette.- it proves. A neighboring deposit of ma'ble furnishes a flux, but as yet charcoal, made from adjacent forests of oak and pine is the only fuel. There is but little coal in the State, the main sup ply coming from the north and even from Australia, but the owners of this mine are not without hope that they may in the vacii.ity find coal near their iron, as has been the case in many other parts of the country. The manufacture of iron is tcreas'ug 011 the Pacific coast. Several rolling mills are iu operation iu San Fran cisco and a large stove factory is project ed. All the iron made so far, lias found a ready sale, as it fortunately has proved of remarkably good quality. About thir ty tons are made a day. ICE CREAM!
