{9, general Insurance and Ileal instate Agent, l owanda, l J a. The T>ailv Review. Tcwanda, Pa., MGr.day, June 5, ICBI. EDITORS. e. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. "Daily Herletr" only *5 centt per month. Vry it. In this latitude the sun goes down at night and we retire to our couches and sleep. In the morning the sun returns and we arise to the pursuit of our various daily avocations. But in the Artie re gion in the spring the sun never sets. There is no morning and no night. It is one continuous day for months. At first it seems very dillicult to understand this strange thing of nature. One never knows when to sleep. The world seems to be entirely wrong aud man grows nervous and restless. Sleep is driven from his very eyelids, his appetite fails and all the disagreeable results of protradted vigils are apparent. But gradually he becomes used to this state of affairs, devises means to darken his tent and once more enjoys his hours of rest. In fact, he learns how to take advantage of this new arrangement, and when traveling pursues his journey by night, or when the sun is lowest, because then he finds the frost hardens the snow a great assistance in sledging. A LESSON IN CIVILITY. —Mr. Hardiug, of Philadelphia, has been a guest at the Catskill Mountain house for several sea sons. lie always had the best in the house and paid well for it. One day last summer his little daughter, who was sick wanted some chicken broth, and Mr. Harding requested the proprietor of the Catskill Mountain house to prepare it. "If you want so much waiting on," was the reply, "you had better buy some land aud build a hotel yourself." Mr. Hard ing said: "Well, I declare, I never thought of that before. I believe I will act upon your suggestion." Harding left the Catskill Mountain house soon af ter this incident and immediately went to work to erect a uew house. The result is the Kaaterskill house, situated a short distance from the Catskill Mountain house' which contains 520 rooms. ICE HOT ENOUGH TO SCORCH WATER. —lf we remove the air and vapor from the region surrounding a piece of ice and take measures to absorb the fresh va por with sufficient rapidity, the ice will never melt, even il we apply ever so strong a degree of heat to it. This, in credible as it appears, is really the case, for numerous experiments made by dif ferent chemists have conclusively demon strated the infusibility of ice in a vacu um. It is also extremely probable that the ice actually gets hot—so hot, indeed as to scorch paper in contact with it— but this is not so fully proven. SINGING SAND. —Dr. Leuz, the traveler, reports having found singing sand in the Sahara. At certain times he heard low murmurings and plaintive sounds in the sandhills of the desert. These sounds would increase and decrease in intensity and cease at last, lie explains the phe nomenon by differences in the tempera ture causing the loose grains of sand to hit against one another aud make the air reverberate. Travelers often reported having fancied hearing a tolling of dis tant bells by the side of such sandhills, similar to the sounds produced by waves of a river or a waterfall. There a chance now for those who believe the General Government could fund its matuungGaud 5 per cents, in a 3 per cent. loan. The State of Penn sylvania is coming for ten millions to take up maturing loans, and the Act of the Legislature gives the State authorities a margin of discretion for the new issue at 4, 3| or 3 per cent. It will be interes ting to see how much money is offered at par for a 3 per cent. loan.
