BACCHALAUREATK SERMON.—The annual sermon before the graduating class of the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute, was deliv ered Sunday evening by ltev. C. 11. WRIGHT and was briefly referred to yesterday morn" ing. The text was Mat. ll—l, 2 and 11. Be fore the* theme of the discourse was announc ed a brief account of the wise men and magi cians of olden time was given. There avoca tion and position in society was clearly ex plained. The wise men of the East held the highest rank in the great Persian empire.— They were careful students; they were the most profound thinkers; they were the best? men of their time. It was these men who lirst did homage to our Saviour. The subject of the discourse was " The Ma gi, or the action of true philosophy." First, true philosophy seeks after Christ. The 31a- TOWANDA, PA., TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 1881. gi with their superhuman scieuce perceived that the promised Messiah was about to ap pear and they immediately set forth to find him. It was a long and weary way, but they were not discouraged by difficulties, they did not go in uncertainty for the bright star went before and pointed out the way. Secondly, true philosophy finds Christ. The magi per sonifying true philosophy sought out and found Ilim who was to take upon Himself the sins of the world. Thirdly, true philoso phy worships Jesus. The wise men when they had found the object of their search, worshipped it. Ail culture without religion is dead. lutellectualism tends to atheism.— One can have all the education and intellect ual acquirements of earth, but unless he ac knowledges God in all things these acquire ments will avail him nothing. Fourthly. True philosophy brings its treas ures to God. The wise men brought the most costly treasures to the Saviour, gold, frankincense and myrrh. So all true culture will bring to Hie Author of all good the treasures it has acquired. Space will not permit us to go into the de tails of the excellent sermon. It was ably written and earnestly and impressively de livered. All who heard the discourse could not but feel that they were instructed and made better by it.
