The Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Monday, June 6, 1881. EDITORS . B. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. " MJtiily Review" cttly 35 cent* per month. Try it. The State of the Goal Trade. Anthracite is fairly active for the quan tity that is available; the harder coals are in better demand than the free-burn ing coals, therefore, there is a diversity of opinion as to the condition of the mar ket. We fancy there will be a very good trade during June at the old rates. No great amount of business is expected in the way of laying up coal for future use, for both consumers and retail buyers still hold the opinion that they can do just as well in the matter of price a couple of months hence. The wholesale dealers and the operators are aware of this con dition of affairs and do not put up circu lar prices; this would only mean higher wages to employes and higer tolls. They are waiting for that time when the buying and shipping cannot be put off,and then there will be a change, beyond doubt. There are no changes in the price-cur rents of coal for June delivered; the pro gramme of work at the mines has not been finally adjusted, but we are author ized to state that the production will be kept in hand, so that the price shall not decline. The companies do not complain of the state of the trade, and claim to find sale for their outputs at the regulation price; it is not difficult, however, to llnd houses in the trade who are offering in ducements to coal buyers in order to move coal. We find parties of the opin ion that the employes at the mines are uneasy at the wages realized. There is no doubt that the men are bearing a very great portion of the burden of the condi tion of trade, due to the unwillingness of buyers to stock up at present rates. They are not so unwise, however as to make a move now, for that would only help the operators to get off the stock on hand at the full price. We may look for something of this description when the market is more active. Then they can command a share of the improved price. The tonnage, for what is by politeness called half time, is ranging around the four hundred thousand point. This is just about what is wanted at present, and it is not expected that we can take care of more for a few weeks to come. We notice that certain parties, through the papers, are claiming to have orders enough for at least two weeks of full work. They might better take some coal from those who are not so well situated. —/S'award's Journal. President Garfield in his letter of ac ceptance, uttered these just sentiments: "To select wisely from our vast popula tion those who are best fitted for the ma ny ofllces to be Idled requires an acquaint ance far beyond the range of any one man. The executive should, therefore, seek and receive the information and as sistance of those whose knowledge of the communities in which the duties are to be performed, best qualifies them to aid in making the wisest choice." Did he act 011 this principle in the appointment of Robertson? The force of the Census Oflice has al ready been reduced one half owing to ex haustion of appropriation; SIOO,OOO more has been expended than expected. Gen erpl Walker thinks it doubtful whether all the work will be ready to lay upon the desks of Congressmen next December, but he expects to publish before next winter at least fifteen reports 011 different subjects, each in a quarto volume. Directors of the Mint has authorized the coinage of 2,300,000 standard silver dollars during the present month. Business Cards. It is an acknowledged fact that the White Sewing Machine now stands pre eminent among lirst-class machines, for its simplicity and light-running qaalities. It is a mechanical fact that the White Sewing Machine is made from the best material and of excellent workmanship, and all its wearing parts are adjustable, so that lost motion can be "taken up" in an instant. It is an undisputed fact that the dura bility of the White Sewing Machine is sustained by a written warranty for five years. It is a progressive fact that the White embodies the most practical and useful improvements of other sewing machines, together with advantages peculiarly its own. It is a money-making fact that the White is the easiest-selling selling ma chine in the market, and therefore all wide-awake dealers make it their specialty. It is a gratifying fact that the White gives universal satisfaction, and that it i steadily and rapidly increasing 111 public favor. CAUTION. Do not be imposed upon by agents and partie who are interested in the purchase and Kale ot'othe* machines. It has become a common trick for un scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and put it in bad order so that they might prejudice pur chasers against it and in favor of their own machines. To guard against such contemptible trickery, we advise all intending purchasers to correspond with us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them the address of a regular authorized dealer for the "White" in their county, or we will offer to sell tliem a machine direct at special prices, and guaran tee satisfaction in every respect. •W.
