Every dollar spent for liquor makes bread dear and labor scarce. Can you af ford to have it sold? Statistics show that SIOO worth ol liq uor can be manufactured with a single day's labor, while all other manufactures such as boots and shoes, clothes, furni ture, carriages, houses built, etc., give to the laboring man uot lees than seven days work for every hundred dollars worth produced, besides giving something of use to the purchaser. The liquor traflic employs little labor and injures business that does employ la bor. The liquor traffic increases taxes, hurts the laborer, hurts the merchant, hurts the grocer, hurts the shoemaker, hurts the butcher, hurts the hardware man, hurts the carpenter, hurts every body, financially, except the seller, and usually ruins him body and, soul, as well as his customers. The liquor traffic makes nine-tenths of the bad debts, causes seven-eighths of the business failures, and makes more than oue-tourth of our taxes. Put money into anything else and it creates labor; the merchant is benefited, the grocer is benefited, somebody is made comfortable, and the world is the better for it. Employers can you afford license? It makes poor and unreliable help, while temperance makes industrious and faith ful employes The "revised" New Testament is the subject of severe criticism by English lit cralists. The London Standard conceded to largely reflect English literary culture says: "Whatever scholars may think of the labors of the revisers, the impression pro duced upon the public mind is one of dis appointment and dissatisfaction. Where uo material change in sense or substance of the authorized version has been shown -to be required by the revisers, for the proper cohstruction of the origional, they have nevertheless thought themselves justified in mending the English and im proving the grammar of passages which have struck deep root in the hearts and memories of the English people." In the suit of Williams vs. the West ern Union Telegraph Company Jay Gould testified that he was one of the promoters of the American Union, and was uncer tain whether he gave a check of five or ten millions for his subscription. He didn't initiate the proceedings for con solidation. Vanderbilt proposed it President Garfield, and Secretaries Blaine, Windom and Ivirkwood will par ticipate in the ceremonies in the Nation al Cemetery on Decoration Day. The Governor and his stall', with the heads of the departments and both houses of tht Legislature, have accepted invitations. Julius C. Burrows, of Michigan, will de liver the address. The President transmitted to the Sen ate a report of the Secretary of State de claring that the case of Michael Boyton does not warraut the interference of the United States, but stating that should it be the sense of the Senate, he would counsel the President to appeal to the benevolence of the British government in Boytou's behalf. Mr J. W .Mackey, went from Paris to London in a special train in order to be at Drury Lane the night of John McCol lough's first appearance. If he had not arrived in time some people believe the performance would have been postponed. TBrf fJBLLJBK'SI GUKDB. PA. AND N. T. R. R. Trains on the Pa. & N. Y. It. It is a gratifying fact that the White gives universal satisfaction, and that it i steadily and rapidly increasing in public favor. C^TJTIOIV. Do not bo imposed upon by agents and partie I who are interested in the purchase and sale of otlic machines. It has become a common trick for uu scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and put it in bad order so that they might prejudice pur chasers against it and in favor of their own machines. To guard against such contemptible trickery, we advise all intending purchasers to correspond with us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them the address of a regular authorized dealer for the "White" in their county, or we will offer to sell them a machine direct at special prices, and guaran tee satisfaction in every respect.
