EDWARD 1 looi'KS and ISRAEL W. MORRIS. two prominent Philadelphia capitalists, and huge stockholders in the Barclay Coal Co., are stopping at the Ward House. C. M. SANDERSON*, who with others, spent quite a fortune in developing the Loyal Sock coal mines several years ago, is registered at the Ward House. He is now operating a colierv at Pittston, and we hope is recover ing some of the money he lost in the coal bu siness here. JAS. It. CLAGIIORX and JOHN* W. If the small amount of theology the lecture contained is orthodox, the Bible needs revis ing again—there are not letters enough in the name of Deity. For our part we do not want to hear him again. Fistst on the pro gramme was music. Mr. Geo. I). Leonard delivered an oration entitled "Benefits of our Union." It, was a very polished effort and showed deep thought. Miss Louise Wilson read an essay entitled "A special Arm in Life essential to success." It war well written and liueiy delivered. A duet by Misses Greenough and Lewis came next. Miss Sarah Ilooley gave a humorous read ing from Mark Twain. The selection was happily chosen and the style of delivery easy. 311" Albert Morgan delivered an oration on the '• Money value of Education*" The pro duction was a good one, exhibiting care in the preparation and was delivered in the speak er's usually graceful manner. Misses Greenough and Lewis gave an in strumental duet. Miss Jennie Greenough read ail essay, the title of which we did not learn. It was an able effort, teeming with brilliant thouglits and-written in herusuallv fascinating style. Mr. R. R. Wilson read a prophecy entitled " A \ isit to Troy in 1900," describing a visit to I roy twenty years hence, the future appear ance of the town, and telling how many grad uates had succeeded in life. After singing by Messrs Leonard and Gos per and Misses Greenough and Lewis, with .Miss Mattie Hcrrick at the piano, Prof. Mc- Gollom, in behalf of the absent presiden , thanked the company for their attention and announced that the graduates would repair to the room below. Here some forty sat down to a well spread table, and while dispensing of the bounties before them,chatted pleasant ly togetner. After an hour spent in this man ner the company departed and a very pleas ant re-union ended. Among those present at the supper we no ticed several members of the school board, L'rof. McG'ollom and wife, Mrs. John Willett, Mr. lb B. Mrs. Garfield's physician announces the gratifying intelligence that there is no longer any doubt as to her recovery. Gen. Williamson, Commissioner of the Land ofiiee, has resigned because he has been offered a more remunerative situa tion in private life. A steamer is soon to leave St. Johns, X. F., for Lady Franklin Bay, with relief for the party who went there last summer in the steamer Guluare. At the request of the Emigration Com missioner of South Carolina, thirty fami lies were sent from New York to Colum bia yesterday, their expenses being paid by the State. The sinking of the pleasure boat near London, Out., Tuesday evening proves much more disastrous then was at first reported. Up to 10 :30 last evening, two hundred and thirty eight corpses had been recovered. The citizens have asked the 3[ayor to proclaim this as a day of public mourning. Many whole families were drowned.
