The T)ail v Review, Towanda, Pa.. Thursday, May 26, 1881. KIHTQHB . y. W. ALVORD. NOBLK N.ALVOIiD " Daily (teri#ir" only 45 crntt per month. Try it. Don't Re-elect Them. EDITORS OK TIIK KKVIKW : We ilitimu ted in our last that Coukiiug anil l'latt would probably be their own successors, as they evidently expected to be. But we now predict that a "change will come over the spirit of their dreams " before the week elapses. We believe we great ly misjudge the people of New York if they do not influence their Legislature to defeat the '• bulldozing" ex-Senators. Conkling's resignation, which he suppos ed would explode like a bomb-shell in tie administration camp, has, like the Aus tralian native's boomerang, reflected back and fell at his own feet when it is likely to blow up his own political prospects, and Mr. IMatt's also. We sincerely hope that the New York Legislature will send TWO MEX to the l". S. Senate, and that they will not re-elect a man whose evi dent intention is to make war on the ad- ministration for the next lour years, and who would not hesitate to destroy the Republican party to accomplish his ends. The Elmira Advertiser, which has been one of the warmest supporters of Sena tor Conkling, has come to the conclusion that the Republicans of the Empire State do not desire the re-election of Conkling and l'latt, and frankly admits that their conduct in resigning is inexcusable and damaging to the Republican cause. The RKVIKW took this view of the situation in the outset. In common with a vast majority of the Republicans of the coun try, we were sorry to see the New York Senators vacate their seats. We could see no possible benefit to themselves by such :i course even should the legislature return them, for the reason that the same legislature had passed a vote of thanks to President Garfiehl for appointing Judge Kobertson, and no effort had been made to rescind it. We repeat, we are sorry to have our country deprived of the sei- vice of two such able men svs Conkling and l'latt, but they have voluntarily cho sen to commit political suicide. We do not censure them for opposing the co firmation of Kobertson. They had a right to vote as they pleased upon the question, llut they had no right whatev ever to throw up their trust from the Re publicans of New York, to desert the Re publicans and the Independents of the South, and to leave the control of the Senate in Democratic hands, because they could not have his own way about one office. The Association which has for i s op ject the due observation of the two-hun- dred'.h anniversary of the founding of our Stale by William l'enu, is making ar rangements looking to the assembling of a grand mass meeting on the coming lib of July at the Permanent Exhibition building in Fairmouut Park. The Asso ciation is arranging with railroad com panies lor very reduced excursion rates on that da}', and it is expected that an immense demonstration will take place. The Treasurersliip seems to be the great bone of contention among Republican aspirants for nominations in this county, this year. Kilcon says the "bosses'Miave promised to put him through, but he be gins to fear they are not going to be able to ''hold their men." Perhaps the peo ple will have something to say about the matter. A temperance causade is progressing at Reading. A scene occurred at the meeting the other night, several minis ters denouncing a brewer undone detend him. The latter was ordered oil' the stage.
