Roar's Box spreads cheer By CHRISTINA CONRAD Collegian Sports Writer A large group of students, dressed alike in white T-shirts, cheering wildly make up a section of the stands at select indoor sport ing events. You may know them as the Roar's Box, a student cheering section organized to support indoor sports. In the fall of 1993, the Lion Ambassadors had a strategic plan ning committee meeting and brain stormed about what they could do to help support indoor sports. The answer was the Roar's Box. "We were interested in starting a student cheering section that would reach Duke basketball pro portions," said Roar's Box commit tee chairperson Larissa Minicucci (senior-animal bio-science). And although the Roar's Box hasn't reached Duke's level yet, it is con tinually growing. "We basically are a late fall, early spring project," Minicucci said. "We try to do some men's and women's basketball games as well ACT NOW! SHAMROCK East Apartments available for Fall 1996. 1 bedroom $555, 2 bed room $665. Call now Associated Realty 231-3333. ACT NOW! By Jacqueline Bigar 01996 by King Featlmre. Syndicate, Inc. HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Tuesday Feb. 27, 1996: Resist any negativity this year. Deal with issues from the past, and greet change in a positive way. In the long run, this could be a banner year when you could create exactly what you want. Friendship means a lot to you, and you will expand your circle of friends. If you are single, romance comes through a friendship and could bring you enormous happi ness. If attached, don't be critical; be open to the positive aspects of your relationship. CANCER draws you out. The Stars Show the Kind of Day You'll Have: 5-Dynamic; 4-Positive; 3-Average; 2- So-so; I-Difficult. ARIES (March 21-April 19) *** Honor priorities. You might be unusually hard on yourself be cause of a difficult communication. Let go, relax and know you are do ing your best. A caring gesture goes a long way. Revelations are impor tant as you deal with someone spe cial. Tonight: Relax at home. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) *** Put off a long-desired project, if necessary. You see events differ ently because of what is happening today. Regroup, and redefine your budget. Communications scheduled for the later part of the day can bring new resources and ideas. Tonight: Go to a favorite spot. GEMINI (May 21 June 20) ***** Stay on top of positive changes. Someone's foul mood does not have to affect you. Pull back, and consider what you want from the situation. Use care with finances; fan support, but the students receive some benefits as well. Stu dents are given T-shirts for the game, occasionally balloons, and the students who participate in the Box are entered in a raffle for free giveaways from local businesses. "There are great giveaways you wouldn't normally get by just going to the game," said Mark Abdel malek (junior-premedicine). Minicucci said of the Roar's Box that they are trying to establish theme nights with the business sponsors because the atmosphere at the Bryce Jordan Center allows them to sponsor a variety of differ ent events. The Lion Ambassadors are try ing to create an emotionally charged crowd. Included in the Roar's Box is a spirit leader who is usually a Lion Ambassador. "Our main responsibility is to lead the cheers, get everyone enthused and start chants," said Molly Pitzer (junior-journalism). "It's not a hard job at all because the students are there to cheer anyway so it is more about getting them started then getting them going." CANCER (June 21-July 22) ** Assume a low profile today. The less said, the fewer problems you will have. Be flexible when you hear news that could affect your plans for the day. Check in on a friend who may have a bad case of the blues and may need you. To night: Whatever you do, take a nap! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) ***** Stay focused on your objectives. Friendships, group events and a new choice are coming your way. A partner may be very nega tive; if so, steer clear and create more of what you want. Make time for a loving gesture to a special friend. Tonight: Go to bed early. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) *** You might be stressed out by an associate who simply may not agree with you. Trust your choices. Use your inner knowledge as you make a decision. Research informa tion, discover what is possible and be willing to take a risk. Tonight: Work late and play late. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) *** Dig up information so you can find more viable answers. You might need to postpone a trip be cause of your work demands and schedule. Recognize what limits you might have to set. Eliminate super fluous work and errands. Tonight: Burn the midnight oil. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) **** One-to-one relating is ac tive; establish better ground rules. Be open to someone's feedback, even if it makes you uncomfortable. You get to the bottom of a problem ed. Often the Roar's Box begins the traditional "We are... Penn State" cheer that rings throughout the Jordan Center. And many times the "cowbell man" (a fan who plays a cowbell to a cheer which makes fans respond "hey") appears in front of the Roar's Box to start his cheer and continues throughout the student section. "We wanted a loud, rowdy, obnoxious crowd to get cheers started," Minicucci said. The Roar's Box is just the pre liminary step for the Lion Ambas sador's strategic plan. "Eventually, next year hopefully, we would like to have a midnight madness pep rally," Minicucci added. With the success of the indoor teams this year, the Lion Ambas sador's plan may become a reality.
