Carter catapults By JORDAN HYMAN Collegian Spats Writer He burst out of the door to the courts at the Penn State Tennis Club and began pacing excitedly from side to side. He couldn't stay in one spot, and as he spoke, the drop of sweat on the tip of his nose grew longer, fell to the ground, and formed again. Michael Carter, the No. 1 singles player for Penn State's men's ten nis team had just knocked off Udi Kish from Pennsylvania in con vincing fashion 7-5, 6-3. To the innocent onlooker it may have seemed an average match com mendable of nothing more than a pat on the back. I've never beaten anyone from Penn," Carter said. "He didn't lose to me, I beat him." The rest of the Nittany Lions fol lowed Carter's heroic example by manhandling their in-state rival Penn 6-1. Even in all of his glory, Carter realized that his team depended on him. "I think this was my best match," Carter said. "I know how bad the team wanted it." Nittany Lion coach Jan Bortner acknowledged the magnitude of Carter's win. "I'd say this has to be one of the best wins for his career at Penn Penn State, they also made sure that they were doing what was best for the EWL. Lorenzo's success as a coach brought much needed recognition to the league, while Lucas' leadership as president coincided with the league's rise to prominence. As the Lions' coach from 1979 to 1992, Lorenzo reestablished Penn State as a national power. Lorenzo was honored as EWL coach of the year six times and Nation al Coach of the Year twice as he racked up a career 188-64-9 record. Lorenzo's EWL record is an even more impressive 77-11-2, as he guided the Lions to 11 consecutive tournament league titles. During one amaz ing run, Lorenzo's Lions won 56 consecutive EWL dual meets. Carter continued to rip winners and place his volleys like an artist painting the lines when he took out Northwestern's top cat Alex Witt 7- .5, 6-3 on Sunday leading the Lions to a first ever 6-1 win over NU. Coach Bortner had nothing but praise for his No. 1 singles player, pointing out that Carter has what it takes to be a great tennis player. "When he plays with that deter mination, when he plays with that kind of fire, he can play with any of these guys," Bortner said. z 41)6,0 • 'THON • (MO • THON • OA° • 'THON • (MO • 0 Phi Delta Theta & Friends Would like to thank the following for their contributions to Thon '96. • • Dancers. In Lorenzo's years as coach, he coached five NCAA champions, 11 NCAA finalists, 53 All-Americans and 47 EWL Champions. Troy Sunderland, who is now a volunteer coach for the Lions, was one of Lorenzo's NCAA finalists. Sunderland remembers his coach as a good motivator and someone who could always help with problems. "He never said a whole lot," Sunderland said. "But what he said, he meant." Current Lion coach John Fritz echoed Sun derland's sentiments. "He was always willing to help out," Fritz said.
