Beverly Hills 106-11 Californian hopes to go from fencing to acting By DON WAGNER Collegian Spoils Writer Talk to sabre fencer Jason Levin for five minutes and it becomes obvious that he enjoys what he is doing fencing. But talk to the Lion team captain a little longer and something else becomes obvi ous, he won't be fencing forever. "Maybe I will train next year after I graduate," he said. "But after that I'm pretty set on moving back to California and trying my hand at acting." This does not mean fencing will take a backseat but rather a passengers seat, he added. Until that time when fencing takes over shotgun in his life, Levin will continue to lead the Lions toward their second straight NCAA title. Levin's leadership style is not an iron-fisted tyranny but rather a more subtle approach. "It's no secret I've given a lot of freedom to everyone on the team," he said. "I haven't whipped our guys to perform, I've sat back and let them perform how they feel they want to perform and I think Suble MALE SUMMER SUBLET. This season all three mem bers of the sabre team have win ning percentages of over 90 per cent and the team went 14-0. Former sabre teammate, current coaching assistant and Levin's roommate, Thomas Strzalkowski said it isn't necessary for Levin to be vocal leader. "He doesn't boss people around and when he goes to practice he leads by example," he said. "People use his tough work ethic as an example and they fol low his lead." Befitting of his unselfish, hard working, team captain type atti tude, Levin puts the success of the team over his own personal suc cess. "I could've lost every bout as long as we send a full team to NCAAs," he said. However the team never had to worry about Levin losing all his matches. In fact, for most of the season they didn't have to worry about him losing at all. Levin reeled off 24 straight victories ONE NON-SMOKING FEMALE roommate needed for spacious five person apartment. "But after that first loss it was something of a relief because I could take a step back and say 'all right I've lost my first bout so now I can relax and have fun.' " Levin has been "having fun" since he came to Penn State in 1993. In his three years as a Penn State fencer he is 106-11 with over a 90 percent winning percentage. Last season he won second team All-America honors and placed eighth at the NCAA tournament. For the past two seasons he has led all sabre fencers with the best indi vidual record. But the Beverly Hills, Calif., native often finds it hard to have fun while being so far away from home. He said that making travel plans takes months instead of days and those plans must include a day for travel in each direction. But he is not alone because he has five other California natives on the SELLING YOUR TRUCK! THE one that needs work. Don't junk it yet! 77- For 86 please. Jake, 237-2170. EXTENSIVE AUDIO SYSTEM.
