Collegian Staff Writer Although many offices of the Undergraduate Student Government are out of session for the summer, USG vice president Sue Sturgis said yesterday that the organization is still working on student issues. Sturgis said three student representatives are preparing alternatives to a tuition increase which they will present at next month’s Board of Trustees meeting if the trustees vote to increase tuition. USG President Matt Baker, Gina Sena of the Council of Commonwealth Student Govern ments, and Graduate Student Association Presi dent Russ Taylor have been meeting together to prepare the alternatives, she said. Sturgis said if USG is already prepared with alternative measures to the tuition increase, it WEDDING? Steve Garban, senior vice president for finance and operations for the University, is scheduled to meet with the three representatives tomorrow to discuss the tuition situation and to tell them what to expect at the July meeting. The University’s 62,000 students have seen a tuition increase for the past 18 years, including a 7.7 percent increase last year. Baker said his initial reaction to a tuition increase would be negative. “I would be disappointed,” he said. “I think that education is too expensive right now and I don’t feel there is a need for a tuition increase.” However, Baker said an increase would be beneficial if the money were to benefit Penn State’s undergraduate population. With class size increasing, the University defi nitely needs more professors, so money spent in that area will be beneficial, Baker said, adding that the University’s engineering and chemistry labs also need improvement. Although USG operates with about 30 percent of its workforce during the summer and is not involved in any orientation activities at this time, the organization is preparing for fall activities and other projects, Sturgis said. The group is also preparing for USG’s involv ment in the “Be a Part From the Start” pro gram, which will familiarize incoming students with the University and USG.
