USG proposes alternatives to tuition hike
By WINSLOW M. MASON JR.
Collegian Staff Writer
Although many offices of the Undergraduate
Student Government are out of session for the
summer, USG vice president Sue Sturgis said
yesterday that the organization is still working
on student issues.
Sturgis said three student representatives are
preparing alternatives to a tuition increase
which they will present at next month’s Board of
Trustees meeting if the trustees vote to increase
tuition.
USG President Matt Baker, Gina Sena of the
Council of Commonwealth Student Govern
ments, and Graduate Student Association Presi
dent Russ Taylor have been meeting together to
prepare the alternatives, she said.
Sturgis said if USG is already prepared with
alternative measures to the tuition increase, it

might prove to the trustees that USG should be
taken seriously.
Steve Garban, senior vice president for finance
and operations for the University, is scheduled to
meet with the three representatives tomorrow to
discuss the tuition situation and to tell them what
to expect at the July meeting.
The University’s 62,000 students have seen a
tuition increase for the past 18 years, including a
7.7 percent increase last year.
Baker said his initial reaction to a tuition
increase would be negative.
“I would be disappointed,” he said. “I think
that education is too expensive right now and I
don’t feel there is a need for a tuition increase.”
However, Baker said an increase would be
beneficial if the money were to benefit Penn
State’s undergraduate population.
Baker added that USG’s alternatives are not
very specific at this point since the three student

representatives have no way of knowing where
the trustees stand on spending.
With class size increasing, the University defi
nitely needs more professors, so money spent in
that area will be beneficial, Baker said, adding
that the University’s engineering and chemistry
labs also need improvement.
Although USG operates with about 30 percent
of its workforce during the summer and is not
involved in any orientation activities at this time,
the organization is preparing for fall activities
and other projects, Sturgis said.
The group is also preparing for USG’s involv
ment in the “Be a Part From the Start” pro
gram, which will familiarize incoming students
with the University and USG.
"A lot of department directors are gone for the
summer,” Sturgis said, “but if people need help
with anything, we’re here,’’she added, referring
to the USG office in 203 HUB.
