10—The Daily Collegian Thursday, June 26,1986 Kingman fined for joke KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Base ball player Dave Kingman has been fined $3,500 for sending a rat to a sportswriter who says she has been harassed by the Oakland A’s slugger since she began covering the team last year. The prank could cost Kingman his job if an incident of a similar nature ever takes place, Sandy Alderson, the A’s vice president for baseball opera tions, said in announcing the fine Tuesday night. Kingman, who frequently does nbt talk to reporters, refused to acknowl edge sportwriters clustered around him Tuesday night as he left the locker room. On Monday night, Kingman had a Royals Stadium guard deliver a pink box to Susan Fornoff of The Sacra mento (Calif.) Bee during the first inning of Oakland’s game with the Royals. Inside was a small rat, at first thought to be a mouse, with a Carlton avoids press, even in time of parting By DON BEMAN Associated Press Writer PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Steve Carlton stopped talking to the news media about eight years ago, claim ing he was treated unfairly. But the numbers he posted thereafter said volumes about the left-handed pitch er destined for the Hall of Fame. In 21 seasons, Carlton ranks second on the all-time major-league strike out list with 3,982. He has had 20 or more victories in a season six times. He ranks among the top 20 in six all time pitching categories, including 10th on the victory list with 318. He is the only four-time winner of the Cy Young Award. “The press is one of the biggest enemies you have in Philadelphia,” Carlton wrote in the book, “The Team That Wouldn’t Die.” “You have to first worry about the opposition, then all the things that are written in the paper. I have just cut all those distractions off.” Carlton was absent yesterday from the news conference the Phillies called to announce they had given him his unconditional release. Team President Bill Giles said Carlton was unemotional when informed Tuesday night.. “I think he knew it was coming,” Giles said. Carlton began what Giles called “14 memorable and remarkable years” with the Phillies in 1972. Philadelphia gave up pitcher Rick Wise for Carlton. Quinn, according to the Phillies history book, was known for making less than good trades and fans let the baseball organization know what they thought of his deci sion to let the popular Wise go. Signed in 1964 by the Cards for a $5,- 000 bonus, Carlton spent only his first year entirely in the minors. By 1967, he was with the Cardinals to stay. Over the next five years, he posted records of 14-9,13-11,17-11, 10-19 and 20-9. In 1969 he set a modern major league record for a nine-inning game by striking out 19 New York Mets, but lost 4-3 to future teammate Tug McGraw when Ron Swoboda hit two two-run homers. He got into a contract dispute with St. Louis in 1971 and the Cardinals were happy to trade with the Phillies. The Phillies finished with the worst record in the league, but Carlton established one of the great pitching records of modern times when he won nearly half the team’s games. He finished 27-10 with a 1.98 earned run avearge and a career high and league high 310 strikeouts. He also won 15 straight games. The following season, health prob lems reduced Carlton to the status of just another pitcher, and he followed that season with two more average campaigns. But in 1976, he was back in form with a 20-7 record. He was a 20-game winner in 1977 (23-10), 1980 (24-9), and 1982 (23-11). Carlton was always a power pitch er. But the Phillies’ coaches also rated him a heavy thinker. On April 39,1981, Carlton struck out Tim Wallach of the Montreal Expos in the first inning to become only the sixth player in major-league history to record 3,000 strikeouts. On Sept. 21, 1981, he struck out the Expos’ Andre Dawson to become the National League’s all-time strikeout leader. But those still weren’t the last of the glory years. The very next season at age 37, Carlton went 23-11 while lead ing the league in almost every major pitching category. A back injury limited him in 1983 to his first losing season since 1973 with a 15-16 mark. Even then, he still led the league in strikeouts (275). On May 20,1983, Carlton struck out the Padres’ Garry Templeton to pass Walter Johnson’s 3,508 career strike outs. On June 7, he struck out the Cardinals’ Lonnie Smith for his 3,522nd strikeout to pass Nolan Ryan and move into first place on the all time list. Last season, Carlton went on the disabled list for the first time of his career with a shoulder injury. But the Phillies no longer thought Carlton could do the job this season. “The greatest left-hand pitcher in Phillies history and one of the great est pitchers of all time will no longer be pitching in Philadelphia.” label that said, “My name is Sue.” Kingman, 37, said he was merely pulling a practical joke, but Fornoff was not amused, saying she has been harassed at times by Kingman. She said the ballplayer has told her he doesn’t believe women belong in the clubhouse. The club said it apologized to For noff, calling Kingman’s conduct “a serious affront’’ to her and to the game. “This is very nice, what they’ve done,” Fornoff said. “It doesn’t mean a thing to me. The only thing we want is for him to stop harassing me. There are two ways that would happen. One, if he’s not around anymore. Two, if he decides to stop it.” Fornoff gave the rat to a stadium employee, Danny Goldsmith, who gave it to a friend’s 5-year-old boy. Before Tuesday night’s game, King man sent word that he would pay $75 for the animal.
