TUESDAY. OCTOBER 17. 1961 Simple 'Tools' To Aid Corps In Philippines A felt cloth to use as a "felt board" and a set of colored paper symbols are a few of the simple tools which could be useful in teaching English in the Philippines. Valerie Komives, staff member at the International Institute in Detroit, Mich., told the 64 Peace Corps volunteers training here for the Philippines that these mater ials and a half-dozen selected books on English would aid vol unteers in their Peace Corps teach ing assignments in the islands. The felt cloth with a stiff back ing and two broomsticks to hold it up could be used as a visual aid to demonstrate ideas in the classroom, she said. The set of colored symbols representing the parts of speech may be used "to demonstrate the basic patterns of English and the basic patterns of Taga log (the national language in the Philippines)," she said. English is the most common language in the Philippines al though it is not the national lan guage. It is used in the classroom from third grade on. By law the government provides schooling for all children from 7 to 13 years of age. But many drop out in the third and fourth grades because they have not learned English well enough to compre hend the teacher who conducts all classes in English. The Peace Corps volunteers will serve as teachers aides and models for the English language in the rural elementary schools.
