PAGE TEN Panther Athletic Director Says Nittanies 'May Be Best in East' Penn State's lopsided 41-12 win over Oregon in Saturday's Liberty Bowl game con vinced Pitt Athletic Director Frank Carver that the wrong teams wound up with the Lambert Trophy. "Penn State might be the best team in the East," Carver said. "I know what you did to us," he continued, "and I saw the Army-Navy game on TV." Carver, who watched the Philadelphia classic from the press box, didn't even mention Yale. I:3 Dick Hoak, Penn State's alter nate unit quarterback, didn't hesi tate when asked why the Lions had such an easy time Saturday. "Our second team was much better than their alternate unit," he ,aid: "We just wore them down. I think both first learns were pretty even but we had too much depth for them." "That was our strategy," coach Rip Engle added. "Our idea, as its been all year long, was to keep the pressure on by substi tuting those two units." Lion captain Henry Oppermann won the Goldie Graham award as the outstanding lineman in Satur day's game. Graham was a Phila delphia High School coach. Oregon's Dave Grayson won the outstanding back award but Hoak was selected as the game's most valuable player. Cleveland Jones, Oregon's 5.3 halfback, was injured on the opening kickoff and was limited to one extra point try. "The loss of Jones hurt us. There's no doubt about it," Ore gon coach Len Casanova said. "Grosz (Dave) would have been better if Jones had been in the lineup. He was our leading pass receiver," Casanova added. Lion Cagers Meet Syracuse Tonight The Penn State basketball team launches its holiday schedule tonight against the Syracuse Orangemen in the Onandoga War Memorial. Following tonight's game, Dec. 27-28 when they travel Evansville Invitational. The Nittanies will match their 2-3 record against Syracuse's 1-3 log in tonight's game State's wins were over Pur due and Lehigh but they have lost to three Atlantic Coast Con ference powers Duke, Mary land and Wake Forest.
