to alumni interests, and a list of the various local alumni organizations. On the whole, the "Engineer" is , deserving of great praise, as it is the first ; attempt to publish such a magazine at State College; and only those who have instituted such at tempts realize how difficult was the task presented to the editors. The cuts would doubtless have been im proved by being painted on a paper having more of a glazea surface; and if the publication of the maga zine is continued, it would make a better appearance to have the page set with a little larger type. These are minor criticisms, however, and the Ccllegian takes pleasure in wel coming the "Engineer" as a valuable addition to our publications, and in urging the hearty support of the student body. The Band Concert The general verdict of last Thurs day night's concert by the band was one of approval. The chief difficulty encountered in giving a program consisting largely of classi cal music was lack of time for practice, since the military work has - taken considerable time during the last few weeks. Although the audience was small, it was ap preciative and did not regret the help given to the organization. The band has been organized only about six years. Prior to that time the buglers were the only musicians for the cadets. It is due solely to the generosity of Andrew Carnegie that we have the band now, for he bought a complete out fit of instruments for the use of stu• dent musicians in a band organiza tion. The set consisted of twenty instruments, excepting the drums, divided among comets, clarinets, trombones, altos, baritones, saxa phones, and bases. Recently a trombone and an alto horn were purchased, and it is expected that a clarinet and some saxaphones will be bought next year. THE STATE COLLEGIAN There are always several men us ing their own instruments and sev eral more who can play, but who do not have instruments, and it is to provide for these men that these new ones are bought. Other expenses at ising from repairs to instruments and new music .are constantly aris ing and the only means to provide for them is through the proceeds of a concert. It is hoped that a larger attendance will greet the band when it appears again, and give it en couragement for more work. Senior thesis Subjects Analytical Investigation of Tin Alloys—R. HI McMillen.
