The First Issue of the New Publi- cation Appears. "The Engineer, "the first thousand copies of which arrived this week, is a ninety-page journal. The first two pages are devoted to a table of contests, and to an index of the illustrations, of which there are more than fifty. Besides the regular illus trations, there are two printed on specially heavy paper which serves to improve their appearance greatly. The magazine is divided roughly into four parts. first, that portraying the industrial policy of the school of engineering; second, that describing the Engineering extensions; third, that defining, the aim of in dustrial education; and fourth, that showing the original investigation work of the students in their theses. As an introduction, letters of wel- come and encouragement are printed from General Beaver, Presi dent Sparks, and Dr. Welsh. These are followed by biographical sketches, with cuts, of President Sparks and Dean Jackson. These show the growth and development of the school, the distribution of students, and a comparison of the work required here and at other schools of equal standing. In describing the engineering ex tensions, advantage is taken of the subject to show the desirability of locating an engineering experiment station at this college. This entails a discussion of the engineering ex periment station bill now before Congress. The thesis subjects presented are those on the oscillograph recently installed in the electrical laboratory; the triple expansion Corliss engine tests; the test on the power plant in the Capitol building at Harris burg; and a study of the heating effect on wires of an electric curreit. A description of the student en gineering societies necessitates an outline of their organization and methods. ibis gives an oppor tunity of ir.serting several excellent papers which were read before these societies.
