Prof. Butz was born at New Castle, Pa., in 1863., and was there fore forty four years old. Having prepared for college at the New Castle High School, he graduated frorii Penn State in 1883 in the Agricul tural course. Shortly after gradua tion he was appointed Instructor in the Preparatory department which position he held for four years. In 1887 he was made Assistant Pro fessor and in 1903 Professor of Horticulture of this college which position he held at the time of his death. Shortly after graduation, Prof. Butz went to California,being attract ed by the horticultural field which seemed to offer the best chances tor success at that time. When the Pennsylvania State Experiment Station was established here, Prof. Butz was induced to return to serve as its Horticulturist. He was em inently fitted to serve in this capaci ty, for his tather was a florist and the early training of Prof. Butz in his father's vocation gave him an ex cellent foundation on which to lay the college training which fitted him for his life work. A fine example of the practical training_ of Prof. Butz is our campus, for the laying out of which he was mainly re sponsible. Prof. Butz was a prominent mem ber of the Presbyterian church of State College, being engaged in, all church activitities as long as his health permitted. He was an in terested and energetic worker in town affairs and his name is prom inently connected with the local im provements of the last few years. His home life was ideal, being marked by great devotion to his wife and children. He was always genial and pleasant in his relations W. T.
