Prof. Butz was born at New
Castle, Pa., in 1863., and was there
fore forty four years old. Having
prepared for college at the New Castle
High School, he graduated frorii
Penn State in 1883 in the Agricul
tural course. Shortly after gradua
tion he was appointed Instructor in
the Preparatory department which
position he held for four years. In
1887 he was made Assistant Pro
fessor and in 1903 Professor of
Horticulture of this college which
position he held at the time of his
death.
Shortly after graduation, Prof.
Butz went to California,being attract
ed by the horticultural field which
seemed to offer the best chances
tor success at that time. When the
Pennsylvania State Experiment
Station was established here, Prof.
Butz was induced to return to serve
as its Horticulturist. He was em
inently fitted to serve in this capaci
ty, for his tather was a florist and
the early training of Prof. Butz in his
father's vocation gave him an ex
cellent foundation on which to lay
the college training which fitted him
for his life work. A fine example
of the practical training_ of Prof.
Butz is our campus, for the laying
out of which he was mainly re
sponsible.
Prof. Butz was a prominent mem
ber of the Presbyterian church of
State College, being engaged in, all
church activitities as long as his
health permitted. He was an in
terested and energetic worker in
town affairs and his name is prom
inently connected with the local im
provements of the last few years.
His home life was ideal, being
marked by great devotion to his
wife and children. He was always
genial and pleasant in his relations
