Chicago Alumni The following is an extract from a letter recently received from an alumnus in Chicago, and will be of interest to both alumni and under graduates: Prof. H. A. Wood, assistant professor of electrical engineering at the university of Illinois was in the city last week, accompanying his class of senior electricals on their in spection trip. While he was here a number of us, who had the pleasure of his instruction while he was teach ing at State, arranged a little supper and smoker, which was held Thurs day evening, Jan. 17th at the Col lege Inn. Those present were J. R. Decker, 'O3. connected with the signal department of the Michigan Central R. R., R. M. Rumble, ’O3, with the Westinghouse Manufactur ing Co., E. S. McLarn, ’O3, E. R. Ale, ’O4 and C. N. Fenstermacher, ’O4, telephone engineers with the Western Electric Co. A very pleasant evening was spent, the one regret being that there had not been sufficient time to make the occasion a more general reunion of the many State men in and around Chicago. The formation of a permanent lo cal branch of the alumni association in Chicago was discussed and very enthusiastically advocated by all with this object in view-dfe now being made, and as soon as possible the first regular banquet will be held and the Chicago branch organized. “Wherever State graduates get together now-a-days there is always one subject that is sure to be dis cussed; and that is the splendid showing of last year’s football team and the great and deserved honor conferred upon their gallant captain, “Mother” Dunn. Every loyal alumnus is as proud of that record as the most enthusiastic undergradu ate, and we all unite in heartiest con- THE STATE COLLEGIAN gratulationS to “Mother” and his band of gridiron warriors, and in the hope that next season will bring forth a team against which even the Yale blue will go down to defeat.” Distribution of Patent Office Models It appears, according to an act of Congress passed on June 22, 1906, that the Secretary of the Interior is authorized to dispose of a part or of all the model exhibit of the Patent Office, either by sale, gift, or otherwise. Acting Com missioner E. C. Moore has issued a notice to the effect that immediate requests from polytechnic schools and colleges having technical courses for portions of the exhibit will be considered in the disposition of the models.. An opportunity is now afforded tor technical- schools to secure models of interesting and well known inventions pertaining to important industries. Inquiries should be ad dressed to the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C. —Sci- entific American. A New Instructor. A change has recently been an nounced in the German department. Miss Simmons has obtained leave of absence for the second semester and will go abroad. In the meantime her place will be taken by Prof. Charles Gunster. Mr. Gunster is a native of Germany and was educated at the University of Frankfort-on the-Main. Later he went to Eng land, where he taught in a prepara tory school in London and in other prominent schools. Several years later he returned to the Fatherland, where he was again engaged in teaching. Finally he removed to Paris, where he remained until com ing to this country about a year ago. It will be seen that Prof. Gunster’s experience makes him well qualified for the worn in which he is engaged.
