LOCAL; INTELLIGENCE. TUESDAY 'MORN ENG,'AUGUST 16, 1864 ~tSl nd Alcialoiloned."—:Our readers' will re member an occurence which happened a few days ago in which a child was deserted by its mother, and left. in the oat eof a good natured butcher On the corner of High and Grant streets The infant wasafterwards transfered to the city Muni and at last ritiootints was thriving rapidly. The police then started off iesearch for the 'tmither who had displayed inch 'heartlerness end inhumanity in regard to her tender off spring. The• search was carded on with the greatest energy, 'and at one time the police were within an inch of arresting her. They ascer tained her name and residence and they confi dently hoped that within a short tinielthey would succeed in securing- . her. Her name is Laura Peck,. and she came . to this city horn Bedford county where her parents reside. On her arrival in this city she took up her abode on Pennsylvania avenue' in the house of a gen tleman named John Reis, and it was during his absence at New Castle that the child in ques tion was born. So much did the police ascertain • oanoerning this woman, but they did not suc ceed any farther, and at present they have lost all hopes of finding her out. It is reported that she has left the city, and consequently she is out of all danger, at least for the present. Siekness Among the 100 Days Men.—lt appears that the hundred days men of some of our Western States have not fared well Since their departure. The Ohio papers lament hav ing accounts of a great deal• of sickness among their men, who, they say, were assigned to bear the very heat and burden of the day. They also report that many were brought home dead, and that others are reported ill, some dangerously. One regiment lost by death seventpen members. and two hundred and thirty-four are now in hos pitals near Washington. This is hard on one regiment, but all the others were exposed to the same hardships. As far as we have ascertained the hundred days' men sent out from this city have fared remarkably well. Some of the men whom we sent out for the emergency have re turned home, and are in good health. The Neg.. ley scouts appear in better condition, than when they went out, and scouting is very laborious. We must infer from this that the young men from our State are more capable of bearing the hardships of military life than others. Meeting In the Second Ward.—A meet ing was held in the Second Ward last evening at the Duque'tine engine house, for the purpose of raising the necessary funds to pay all boun ties, and thereby averting the draft from that precinct. At the meeting held on Saturday el e. ning the citizens succeeded wonderfully in this respect, and raised money, it is said to the amount of otre thotistuid dollars. The measure adopted by the school board for raising funds, was also a domplete success, and it is announced that not less than thirty thousand dollars was raised by that means. This will certainly avert the diaft from the ward provided that the cc rolled men do their duty. The meeting held enenirkF was numerously attended, and the citizens paid all due respect and consideration to the matter on hand. 'Under existing circum stances, and with such brilliant auspices we are certain that the citizens of the Second Ward will he crowned is iris success. A Long Span. The inllroad bridgelu procc s i of erection across the Ohio river at Steubenville, will contain a section of one hundred feet span, which will cross the channel at an elevation of almost one hundred feet above high water marl; The badge will be permanent, without a draw, as alai will tie the bridge across the Mononga hela 'at Pittsburgh. On the completion of these two river Lridgee, (and the Grant's Hill tunnel in Flitsburgh,) the direct route from Pittsburgh vlaf Steubenville to Columbus, will rank high in importance as a Penn . aylvania railroad connec tion; for its niliaLces will reach to and beyond Indianipolis, ultimately to Lake Michigan and to d.lbh Xisaiesippi river. The New Artillery Company —A sect ion of the new artillery company of Cnptain How ard Morton having.been recruited, went to Camp Reynolda yesterday, where they have engaged quarters until the organization is completed, when they will all. together proceed to the scene of their labors. The company is recruited fL r one hundred days' service, and as it has been Co. ciarid - thatell those Who`are in that service are not subject to draft until their term is ended, we would deem it advisable for all enrolled men who Wish to avoid the draft to join this compa ny. This is the only chance for one hubdred days-now offered, so they had better seize the opportunity immediately. To 100 Day Men.--The following is an ex tract from an epistle issued by the Commission at Of Pehsions: It may be of interest to the families of such of our one hundred day men as may be drafted next month. We copy: PENSION' OFFICE, August S. 1564. Sin—Co the inquiry in your letter of the Ed instant,l reply, that under the act of July 14. 1864, the same rights in regard to pensions are granted to those called into service for 100 days, and to their widows or dependent relatives, .in ease of death, as to those who have entered• for the term of three years. This law, under Whieh all pensions, based on service in the present war, are allowed, is unequil ocal in the language, ma king no distinction between those engaging for a longer or shorter period. It surprises me to learn that doubts on this subject have existed in the minds of any one. Our Artillery Engaged, Miorn.F.Towx, August p. our cavalry came up with the rear guard of the enemy here early thisit a noon, and a slight skirmish ensued in the town. Our infantry were close at the heels of the cavalry. The rebel.; are now in line of battle opposite Cedar Creek, across the Staunton like, be tween two and three miles distant. They occupy the high land beyond, which forms a strong defensive po,ition. They are said to have two lines of battle , half a mile long. After the Tennessee sur rendered, the rebel gunboats Gaines and Morgan, succeeded in getting under protection of Fort Aforgan. This ter minated the action of the day. Farragut sent a flag of truce to the commanding officer of Fort Morgan, Brig. Gen. 'Richmond L. Page, to say that if he would allow the wounded of the fleet as well as their own to be ta ken to Pensacola where they could be better cared for than here, he would send a vessel. General Page consent ed, and the Metacomet was dispatched. Total loss on our side was forty killed and eighty-eight wounded. On the reb el ram Tennessee were captured twen ty officers and about one hundred and seventy men, and on the Selma were ta ken ninety officers and men. From the Shenandoah Valley. Retreat of Earley's Forces NEIN' Yortx, August 15.—The Trorid'or special, dated "in saddle, Shenandoah valley, the 12th, 10 a. m.," says: The rebels continue to retreat, and are sup posed to be on their way to Strasburg or Front Royal. The weather is intensely hut, but &spite this our men are in ex. cellent marching order, and our move ment is as rapid as possible. The ene my has the start ahead of ; us, however, and if he chooses to continue to retreat pursuit will be long, and a battle some days distant. Doubtless it is Early's policy to retreat farther before giving battle, as by retreating he draws us far. ther from our base while he gets nearer a pci iti.)ll where he can be reinforced before fighting. The pursuit, however, is conducted by one in whom the army I have great confidence, and the strength of his force has already been calculated ! for emergencies. From Fort Leayenwortit.
