Furniture. DIRECTORS. ROM POST. FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 10. From the London Star. April 23 The Faindas Bishop of Orleans Prays for the 'Union Cause. Mgr. Divanlonp, Bishop of Orleans, having recently addressed a letter to the clergy of his diocese condemning slavery, the Temps praises without restriction the sentiments of the learned prelate, and ex presses its satisfaction at being able to ad mire at the same time the eloquent language employed and the opinions expressed. We openly acknowledge, says that jour- nal, that the Bishop of Orleans has been happily inspired in this circumstance.— While protesting that he will take no part in the lamentable quarrel which now di vides .the United States, Mgr. Dupanloup sums up the circumstances of it in striking terms; he then recalls the regular, equita ble and paCific measures proposed and adopted to put an end to slavery, conclud ing in the following precise terms : It is the first time within sixty years that the central power has adopted a decided line of conduct in the matter, and that it has engaged-the entire nation in a vigor ous effort against the evil. The . question, therefore, without being terminated, is seriously entered on; a step has been made, a path of hope has been opened. That is an additional motive for myself, and an imperious need to pray God that He may deign to bless an enterprise the pacific so lution of which must be ardently wished for. Then, rising above the local question. Mgr. Dnpanloup combats hand to hand the principles ofslavery, and terminates by quoting that famous declaration of the Council of La Rochelle, drawn up in 1853, shortly after the emancipation of the slaves in the French Colonies. The Catholic church has always deplored the serere sta. rery in which a midtitude of men are re tained, to the great detriment of their souls, and has never ceased to labor to remedy so great an evil. Without, indeed, examin ing too closely if that has always been the doctrime of the Catholic church, we ap plaud the "ardent views" formed by Mgr. Dupanloup, "that this severe slavery should at length cease on the entire surface of the christian world." The Bishop of New Orleans does not continue his hopes to the liberation of ne groes in America; but in noble language he exclaims in terminating : Alas ! slaves are not the only people op pressed. There are countries even in Eu rope, for there is Ireland, there is Poland, there is Syria, where oppression exists, under a different form, without being a les ser evil. For myself, I shall never resign myself to any evil ; I deplore all, and wish that I were able to remedy all; and, if my life is sufficiently long, with the grace of Ged, I will consecrate it - entirely to con tributing my weak share of effort and labor to effacing, one by one, all the scourges which desolate humanity. If I could act I would do so: , if I could speak I would raise my voice; if I can only pray, I will at least address my prayer to God. 102,9%5 25 ALLEGHENY INSURANCE CO. OF PITTSBURGH.
