Editor and Proprietor DIVIDENDS J. W. COOK. Cr ihier S a Operations on James River-- Prospective Fall'ofitichmond. From the . Richmond : Dispatch. 9th inot. We learn through Captain Hill, of the steamer Schultz, who arrived here last night at 10 o ' clock, that our batteries at Day's Neck and Hardy's Bluff, on James river, were attached by three of the enemy's gunboats yesterday morning at eight o'clock, and silenced in a short time. The steamers Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson both arrived here yesterday even ing at a late hour, and are now at Drury's Bluff, awaiting further orders. I4is believ ed that the river at that point-will be pro perly obstructed by the sinking of boats and vessels. One of the vessels which attacked our batteries at short range was the iron-clad steamer Galena. The two others were suvosed to be wooden vessels. e learn from Capt. Hill that_ he was yesterday ordered by. General Magruder (now sick at Westover) to take on at Berkley wharf 175 barrels of flour and a large lot of bacon and beef, and proceed at once up Chickahominy river to supply the Commissary Department of our army. After having loaded, Capt. Hill proceeded without delay; but upon arriving at- Shop Wm. on James river, letter from Win. H. Southall, Esq., magistrate of Charles City county, in which it was stated that h heavy fight: was then (Wed nesday evening) progressin g at or near Diaschun bridge, in James City county, immediately opposite his _residence, at Mount Airey, and expressing apprehen sions dirt a portion of our army had been cut off. _ .• We malie, thiaextractlretn his letter : "From appearances, the fight approaches Trower'S. Point, at the . Mouth of Diaschun creek!, j, fear our orm.y it cut . off ' God help us in our struggle for independence. There i 9 a lighter now crossing the river at the mouth of the above creek, loaded.with troops. '' Capt. Hill, learning tide information, -and shortly. after meeting the Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson on their way up, deemed it prudent 1.9 return to Rich mond with the commissary stores. We are no alarmists, but in view of the facts abOve stated , we'earnestly urge upon every citizen to be watchful and determin ed to meet the invader with an Undaunted spirit, should he succeed in making his way to the vicinity of. UNION VESSELS UP JAMES RIVER Bombardment of Batteries at Day's Panic Caused by their Apperaance The citizens cf Petersburg. Virginia, were thrown into a great panic on the Bth inst., by the appearance of the new iron clad gatibiatellalena up James river. We makethe following extracts from Peters burg and ilkhmond papers: Slag Intelligenee. From therPetersburg Exams. May- 2. I A of the special Confederate steamer Patrick Henry,. arrived in this city yesterday afternoon. with the important intelligence that one of the enemy's iron-eladlunboats had silenc ed our batteries at Day's Point, on James river, and was then coming up the river. To save time, Captain Tucker had this messenger placed on the steamer York town, that being the quicker vessel, with orders to proceed at once to City Point, and thence to this city, to notify our Pro vost Marshal of the fact, and telegraph the circumstances to Richmond. From City Point the messenger came to this city in a buggy, and at once performed his duties. • The news soon spread abroad on the streets and created a great deal of excite ment. What steps have been or will be taken to prevent the ascent of the James. river to any vital point we do not know, and would not tell if we knew. ' The mat ter wears a serious aspect, but no one here will falter in any duty that may be assigned him. Rumbrs were rife, after the arrival of the Norfolk train, of the bombardment by the enemy of the Craney Island and Sew all's Point batteries, and our fortifications elsewhere . beloW, but they are doubtless all unfounded. We shall probably hear more of this af fair to-day. In the meantime we advise all to keep cool and calm, and pnrsue their ordinary avocations as usual. From the same po;.er. Late in the afternoon a rumor that one of the enemy's iron-clad gunboats had come up James river, silenced the Confed erate batteries at, Day's Point, and was then leisurely feeling her way still further up, put many timid soulkin a dotter, and provoked a vast deal of discussion as to how long it would require for the piratical craft to reach Petersburg. We have in formation to the' effect that one of the en emy's gunboats did come up James river yesterday as far as Thirwell's Bay, and reconnoitered a little; but that. her com mander has any idea of coming higher np the river at this time we do not believe. There is a rumor that the Yankees were landing forces yesterday at Burwell's Bay, or Smithfield, and that their intention will doubtless be to march across the country— a distance of some eighteen or twenty miles —and take possession of Suffolk. It is proper that we should state that this rumor lacks confirmation. `SBURGH, SA' SELECT TALE. A NON - COMBATANT HERO. [Remainder on Monday.) In this Kremlin, the citadel of the capi tal, the abode of the czars, and which con tained their treasure, the sacred images of the Greek religion, and the mortal re mains of the sovereigns laid out in funeral chapels, adorned with gold and gems, Na poleon took up his quarters. His sol diers, who had long been strangers to bed, that night slept on soft couches in mansions of the noble and wealthy. They were dreaming of enriching themselves by the spoil of those luxuriant but forsaken abodes, when the torches of the incendi aries•—the felons who had been iiberated front prison and left behind for this dread purpose—were applied to the holy city. The gales of the equinox acted like a bel lows upon the rising conflagration. The polished steel roofs of the buildings soon became red hot, balloons of fire drifted to and fro, and the air resounded with the falling of houties and the springing of mines. Napoleon clung to the spot as long . as possible but at. length the increasing fury of the flames rendered it. quite untenable, and he removed—not without great peril in passing through the burning streets—to Petrowskoie, a chateau of Peter the Great, about four miles from the city. For three days and nights the fire raged, consuming the entire capital, except the Kremlin, the churches, and a few of the large stone houses. Napoleon surveyed the scene from his chateau, and was overheard by Larrey to exclaim : "This event is the presage of a long train of disasters." As soon as possible the Emperor returned to the place where Mos cow had stood. "The camps which he traversed," says M. de Segur, "in order to arrive at the Kremlin, offered a singu- laeaspect. They were on thick- and cold mud in the midst of fields. Here the sol diers were warming themselves by ig niting furniture of acacia, windows of handsome framework, and doors of rich gilding. Around these fires, on a litter of damp straw, which was badly sheltered by a few planks, one sw the soldiers and their officers. soiled a with mud and • blackened with smoke, sitting in arm- chairs, or sleeping on gals of silk. AT their feet were stretched or heaped up shawls of cashmere, the most rare furs , of Siberia, and also stulTh oold of! Persia. Between the camps f and the 1 town, one met crowds of soldiers, dragging or trailing their booty,. or chasing before them, as beasts of burden, moujiks bent under the weight of the pillage (Xi their capital, for the fire showed near twenty thousand inhabitants, unperceived till then, in this immense city. They went to shelter th emselves, with the wreck oftheir goods, near our :Ives. .They lived pell-mell with our soldier, protected by some, and tolerated or seams remarked by others. There were even abort ten thousand sol diers of tbe enemy. During several das, they wandered in the midst of us ; free, an y d some of them still armed." Having deferred as long as possil,le the evacuation of Moscow, on account of the loss of prestige which he knew must re sult front any retrograde movement, and despairing of any conditions of peace from Alexander, Napoleon commenced his re treat. The one hundred and three thous and men who yet remained to hint carried an juin:tense plunder, beside that famous and gigantic cross snatched from the tow er of the great Ivan, which the Emperor fondly hoped to see erected on the dome of the Invalides at Paris. They were also accompanied by many French families who had long resided in Russia. but were now apprehensive of being left behind. The dreadful story of this retreat has been told again and again. Before the French could effect their passage . across the Beresina, the Russians arrived in enor mous force, and began to fire upon "the division of General Partoureax, the sol diers of which division immediately wish ed to cross the bridge all at once. The con veyances clashed with each other. Some of the unfortunate men were crushed, while others, losing all spirit, threw them- selves into the stream ; some opened a cruel way for themselves by massacreing all who obstructed their passage. Shrieks of women, cries of despair, roar of can non, noise of explosions, and a variety of sounds, were all heard together. A cer tain number, in the abyss of.despair, sat on the banks half -stupefied, and, after ga;ing as if they scarce saw , died of pros tration. There was throughout, a frightful mixture of imprecations, of clashings, and of strugglings ; thence arose indescribable disorder, and a breaking of the overload ed bridge. The Russian army approach. ed, and with its formidable artillery tore the ranks of the French mob of soldiers." In this immense disaster, the surgeon-in chief, after 'haling crossed over with the Imperial Guard, discovered that requis ites for the' sick and wounded of his coun trymen had been left on the opposite bank. With equal humanity and heroism, he re crossed the stream ; and hardly had he done so, when he was surrounded by a wildly excited crowd: He was almost suffocated in the midst of it. It is here that one may find proof. of that unbound. ed affection with which Larrey had in spired the soldiers with whom he was serving. No sooner was he recognized, than he was carried with astonishing ra pidity, in the arms of the soldiers, across the river. On all parts was heard the cry nearly in these words : "Let us save him who saved us 1" [To be continued.] - - M'CORD & CO* HATS, CAPS, STRAW GOODS, . • RONNITIM 'AND SHARER WOODS.
