It is staled that passengers who left Bost Ion onSalurday, at 7 A. M. arrived a Hartford about 5 P. M. via Worchesterand Springfield Rail Road, making the passage in ten hours. The St. Louis Bulletin i3 boasting of a sweet potatoe, raised in that vicinity which measures in lengthowree one inch, and is six and a half inches in circumstances. The Norristown Free Press mentions a pumpkin raised by a Mr. Prizer of that neighborhood, weighing 1501bs! It is saidjthit the U. Barton and Brooke, have addressed a circu lar to each of the banks of this city and county, saying it is understood that each of them has issued, paid or transferred bapk notes, bills or tickets for less than five dol lars, and requesting each to stale if it de signs to desist in such proceedings, and adding that if it be repeated, prosecutions will be instituted- We again ask our readers to' notice tho contrast between the present and late Slate government, in relation to this violation of tho law In 1837, tho object of the public officers seemed to be the defeat of the 'aws but now its object is its enforcement. This is exactly what tho peoplo require and will support. While the laws exist they should be maintained; and the best modo by which public functionaries can inspire public con fidence, is to maintain tho laws faithfully and fearlessly. Tho evils of th ia banking system has become -intolerable and he is the best patriot who will strive the most to remove them by temperate remedies. A great evil of the system is too ynuch paper and too little coin. Let the p.iper bo re strained and tho coin will multiply. A now issue of " shin-plasters" wisuld banish evory dime from circulation.
