EDITOn, WEDXESPA! MORNING, JLLI fl, 1586. Ilcpuhlican Ticket. KTATK. For Governor, Gen. JAMKS A. BEAVER, of Centro County. For Lieut. Governor, Hon. WILLIAM T. DAVIES, of Bradford County. For Auditor General, Col. A. WILSON NORRIS, of Philadelphia. For Secretary of Internal Affairs, Col. THOMAS J. STEWART, of Montgomery County. For Congress-at-Large, Gon. EDWIN S. OSBORNE, of Luzerne County. COUNTY. Congress, Hon. J. B. AGNEW. Subject to action of District Conference Assembly, CHARLES A. RANDALL. Treasurer, SOLOMON FITZGERALD. Surveyor, HENRY C. WHITTEKIN. Coronor, Dr. J. W. MORROW. The attempt to force Mr. Powdeily into politics has failed dismally. lie has boycotted the whole scheme. If Wallace is nominated for gov ernor there will be a great opportuni ty to get out of the way and allow both wings of the Democracy flap to gether. LTorizomtal reduction, as applied to the river and harbor appropriations by the Senate, works smoothly and wisely. It is an excellent balance wheel upon the extravagance of a Democratic House. The Boston Herald concludes after some reflection that "the Democratic party is a very absurd party." The Mugwumps are a little late in acquir ing this hump-packed truth, but it is batter late than never. Thebe ib some likelihood that Dem ocratic quarrels will give the Repub licans two or three additional districts in Indiana. The spoils haven't been sufficient to go around out there, and the features of the pale-faced moon are spotted with blood. The Democratic candidate for gov ernor of Alabama was asked at a re cent mass meeting whether he was for Prohibition or against it, and he re plied simply, "I am a Democrat." This answer was received with deafen ing cheers and after the meeting the fellows crowded around asking him what he'd take. Theee is a gruesome and distressing etory afloat to the effect that President Cleveland's order warning federal of ficers against using their positions to control nomination! was aimed, not at the regulation spoilsmen and machine politicians, but at old Civil Service Commissioner Edgerton, who rushed out to Indiana the other day to work against the renomination of Congress man Lowry. This is a saddening tale. If it is true, it not only sheds a new light upon the President's action, but it places Judge Edgerton under the more or less painful necessity of haul ing himself up before his own com mission and making a frightful exam ple of himself in the interest of reform. WASHINGTON LETTER. From our regular Correspondent.) Washington, D. C, July 16, '86. The first controller has decided that out of the appropriation of $100,000 made for the present year to carry out the provisions of the act establishing the bureau of animal industry the commissioner of agriculture cannot expend any fraction for the purchase of cattle not known to be diseased but which have been simply contiguous to cattle diseased with pleuro pneumonia, and can only purchase and destroy diseased animals when in bis judg ment it may be essential to prevent the spread of pleuro pneumonia from one state to another. He bas also de cided that the commissioner cannot out of eaid appropriation pay tho dif ference between the estimated value of cattle and their value for beef, when they have been slaughtered for beef, J. E. TVENK, because they were suspected of boin affected with pleuro pneumonia. Everything is not running smoothly with Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleveland' latest move in journalism. She is un der contract to take editorial manage ment of Literary Life, in Chicago Mr. Elder, the business manager o the paper, wishes to insert the name of Miss Cleveland in the title page but has received a missive from her couched in the following terras: "By all means leave my name entirely off tho front cover. Let it appear no where on the cover or anywhere else You will not do bo, for you know that we discussed that point in our inter view, and this must be final." Miss Cleveland also demands that no ad vertisements shall be inserted in tho magazine until they shall first have been submitted and approved by her and that not a line shall appear onti she shall have passed judgment upon its literary merit. The Postmaster General has, in com pliance with petitions signed by large numbers of business men in numerous cities, amended the postal laws and regulations so as to permit the trans mission through the mails within the United States and Territories of liquids not liable to explosion or Bpon taneous combustion or ignition by shock or jar, and not inflamable; soft soap, pastes or confections, ointments, salves and articles of similar consist ency, under certain conditions insuring safety to other mail matter in trans mission. Ex-Senator McDonald returned to Indianapolis from Washington last Friday with the intention of remain ing there until August, but on Satur day he was again summoned to the capital. This, together with the fact that he had a consultation with W.H English, caused a renewal of the ru mor that McDonald is to take a place in the cabinet. He stated, however, that there was no political significance in his return to Washington. His friends say that the Attorney General ship in the only cabinet position he would take. The members of the U. S. Senate hare contributed $10 each for the pur chase of a portrait of Senator Wade lampton, painted by Mr. Guerry, of bouth Carolina, to be presented to that state. The portrait is to be the Sena tors joining iu the presentation and expressing the pleasure it affords them to present the picture of their distin guished friend and colleague to his native state. L.
