On Tuesday last, our town was thrown into a most intense excitement by what was supposed to 1.43 u veritable "Fugitive Slave etWO." There has been a very pretty girl here attend ing school for two or three years past, to whom one of the F. F. V.'s stands it, the double rela tion of father and muter. AS moat f, he Bent her here to go to school, and 09 the acknowledged father, ho has paid her hoarding and tuition. The girl is very much attached to her father, but from the t ac t that he is engaged in buying up slaves in Virginia and shipping them South, she has bad the good sense to refuse to return to that State for fear she might share the same fate.— Last winter a strong effort was made to induce her to return to Virginia, and large promises were made to her by her father, If she would do to; but she d oc u t io. As a last resort, her moth er was sent over In persuade her to go, but she still refused. mother, on htr return, was chipped South; the eolored people, and others here, believed that it was the intention to'ship both mother and daughter, if the girl could bare been obtained. On the day above mentioned, the father, in company with a tory hard looking customer, both well armed with rovolvere, called to one the girl. She, having full confidence in her father, who had always acknowledged and treat d he as his daughter, was not at all alarmed—in lac it is said oho had written to him to send, o come and bring her some money—but eomo 0 hor friends, believing that the design was to kid nap her, raised such a cry of "murder," and all other cries, that the . town was instantly alarmed, and quite a crowd; as soon congregated to as certain the cause of the row. The Virginians solemnly protested their pacific intentions—the father protesting that he had come to visit the girl and pay her bills, without any intention of taking her away; that, in fact, he hat emancipa ted her, and in proof of this, allowed what pur ported to be a deed of emancipation, which he oficred to giro her r ...This instrument, however, on examination, lOW found to he of no validity. This fact tended to increase the suspicion. All things, however, would have gone off smoothly but for the fury of ono of the negroes, who had o private wrong of his own to avenge. It seems that after the birth of the girl in ques tion, her mother, with the consent of her master, married this excited individual, who, by his ef forts, had bought and paid for his own body and soul, and had mails a payment or two on his wife, whose freedom he had also purchased, and who was thn mother of this girl before he had purchased and married her. Tawney as his skin ia, he seems to have heen somewhat outraged by the sale of his wife, 'her he bad lived with bor fourteen yearn, and had partly paid for her. lie claimed that he had other grievances—that he had detected between hie wife and the gentleman sundry peccadilloes, and that according to the law in the Sickles cue, he had n right to kill the gentleman, and meant to do it imitanter. Hereupon the chivalry of Virginia found safe ty in the house of s colored man, drawing the enchains of the windows to prevent being shot through them. llere was exhibited some of the tallest specimens of humble euppliostion ever before poured forth from the fear shriven soul of mortal Gods,. men and negroes were im plored to save him from the wrath of this furious chattel. At length, after the crowd had been excess ively amused, and the I'irginians neared, it was proposed that both parties ground their arms and come to a truce. Whereupon the Virginians surrendered their revolvers into the bands of Esq. Marlette. He has found, at Thebes, after long and difficult researches!, the tomb, still intact, of Pharaoh Amos's. The king is lying in a coffin, completely covered with gold leaf, ornamented with large wings painted on it. Thirty jewels of great veins were found in the same coffin by the side of the king, en le:melee a hatchet of gold ornamented with figures in lapielazule. Some years ago M. Marlette, had a similar piece of good fortune; in finding in the tomb of Apiethe jewels which now form the principal or nament of the Egyptian Mnoeum of the Louvre. The jewels of Amosis are still more favorable, from their number and quality, This discove ry of a royal tomb intact is the most important one that M. Marietta hap yet made in Egypt. A report of his death wee circulated and extensive ly believed several months ego, and the obituary notices that bin rumored decease then elicited proved clearly bow be was regarded by the civ ilized world. No one except the hangers-on of his court, and a few of the ultramontane jour. naliste, will be found to lament the late king or speak a kind word for him now he it dead. Ferdinand Charles IL, King of the Two Sic. flies and of Jerusalem, Duke of Parma, Plaisance and Castro, and Hereditary Grand Duke of Tus cany—he claimed more titles than be had any right to—wee born 4annary 12tb, 1810, and in ' 1830 eueceeded his (Mier to the throne of Na. pies. In 1832 he married the Princess Marie Christine, of Sardinia, a cousin of the present King. The issue of Ibie marriage was one son, Francis Leopold, not King of Naples. Marie Christine dying in 183 G, Ferdinand, in 1837, $, married Marie Thee so Isabella, an Anstrlan princess, by whom e had ten children. The eldest of these lita years of age, and it as the cherished ambition of hie mother to havr . lut placed on the throne instead of the legiti ate heir, Francis Leopold. King Ferdinand occupied such an en pleaaantly promieent position in the history of Europe for the last twenty years that his career is tolerably well known. Tyranniacel and crafty, his exactions in 1848 aroused the people of Sic ily Mooted to rebellion, but the King anticipated the coming storm and tried to shelter himself under a constitution. A liberal charter woo pub lished and sworn to by Ferdinand on the 24th of February, 1848. Hie subjects, however, de. mantled further concessions, and even a partici pation in the war then raging between Lombardy and Austria. To some of these dementia the King acceded, but the country was too ripe fcr a revolution, and on the 15th of May an inane rection broke out at Naples. The constitution was overthrown, others offered, bat for a year the country remained in a slate of anarchy.— Ferdinand bombarded his own cities, slaught ered his subjects, and finally by the forte of arms regained his sway. Ills revengeful spirit was fully aroused by whet he considered, per. hops with some reason, an abuse of the privile ges he had at first granted. Be was now hated by hie people, and knew it. He had been dub. bed with the title of King Bombe, and Übe was to hare the reputation of a tyrant, he seemed fully determined that he should deserve it. Although a emperatitious fear prevented him from shedding blood, be indicted punishments almost as fearful, and many of the prominent liberals of the country, including some of those who had assisted him in the preparation of the cooslitution, and toward whom he even affected personal' friendship, were imprisoned in the rodent dungeons. These incarcerations were carried on in the most wholesale manner, the number of political prisonere being estimated at one time as high as thirteen thousand. Not content with imprisoning these unfortunates, bodily torture was often resorted to. It Is but a short time since the newspapers contained an account of the "cap of silence," a head-dress of iron so arranged as to be tightly compressed on the head with screws, preventing the victim from uttering fiery while undergoing torture by exoessive heat or otherwise. The Neapolitan ciort papere, however, declared the whole story to he a fabrication. There is, nevertheless, too much undeniably known to allow any sympathy to be felt at the death of the late King of Naples. Mr. Gladstone Lord Clarendon, Lord Palmerston, and other English statesmen have repeatedly called the attention of the British Government, and the world at large, to the awful outrages committed by Ferdinand. The recent release of Poerio and his companions has incidentally revived these accounts. Even by his brother monarchs the the tote tjrant was detested, and France nod England bed both broken off all diplomatic in tercourse with the Neapolitan Court. The death of Ferdinand II was as horrible a retribution as revenge for his revolting crimes could demand. The Bourbon hereditary cum, plaint of scrofula was augmented by other de. reloretnenis or disease, too revolting to Ito men tioned. Though comparatively little is known of him except in his public character, his long life of luxurious profligacy wan fearfully punish ed, and like thehand writing upon the wall, at which Belshazzar trembled, the hideous soros and ulcers no his corrupting body told clearly to Ferdinand 11. that hle days were numbered. And yet be would not believe the dreadful an. ! nouccmant. With a servile superetition he passed hie lime ialielening to formal prayers and masses and in devoting his attention to thopuerile rel. rema ap. s hor t • shirt se h i oe A abort since, he thong o had received a special visit from the Virgin glary, who promised him a speedy recovery; and hugging these miserable deluaioul to his heart, hie latest hours embittered by angry contests an to who should sauteed him, annoyed by the efforts of an ambitious wife to secure tem poral success fur her children, and amid the most agonizing bodily torture, he passed away to another world. —A'.
