CULTURE or RIVRWIICAT —This is flti impor tant crop, and we present a few hints in regard to its cultivation and uses, for the consideration of our readers The time of sowing varies with the Henson and place, but from the 00th of Jane to the 4th of July is regarded as the best and most proper newton: but we have known good crops from that sown on the 12th of July. If sown too early it is liable to blast, and if too late it is liable to he hurt by,the frost. The land beet adapted to this crop lea light loam, and it is also a good crop to subdue and ameliorate newly cleared or recently drained land. The general practice among farmers has been, to sow buckwheat on their poorest land, when there is no crop in fact, which will better pay for liberal and geuerotte manuring. The quantity of seed per acre should receive due attention. It is a crop that spreads very much, and therefore lens seed is just as good as more. From repealed trials, we have found that half a bushel is amply sufficient for an acre of ground—and if thin is sown evenly over that surface, will give as many stalks as can comfortably grow; for if a larger quantity were sown, the growth of straw would hose abundant that it would lodge down, and thus would not fill so heavily, or ripen so evenly. After being cut it should lay for a number of days upon the ground, and if out in two or three showers, no damage is done, if it he turned over so as to dry off. When hunted late the barn It should be thrashedimmedtately, as at that time it shells out more readily, and it can as well be done then, nod it is out of the way. The aver age yield is from t wenty to twenty-five boshels per acre, Oil hOtigh some accounts of the yield of this crop seem almost fabulous -one of which occur, lowest writing—that of Mr. Samuel Allen of Benton, Yates county, who, in 1555, raised one hundred and twenty-seven bushels from one bushel sowing, on about two and a half acres. The seed is valuable for food to both man and I beast, and the straw, Mint before being killed by frost, is a most excellent fodder for sheep, they being particularly fond of it. It seems that this crop should receive more attention from our farmers, an its merits certainly demand -- Country Gentlemen. Tits Two Ktane et Frame's.— It is some what strange that more attention has not been given to the recent letter of Secretary Cans to Felix Lo CI :se, of Memphis Tennessee, inform ing hint that his naturalization n this country will avail him nothing, if heviaits France against the conscription. This ik a total abandonment of the doctrine laid down by Mr. Marcy in the fiesta case. The Administration, which has al ways borne a jealous dislike of Marcy, has found the Mercy theory very inconvenient in practice. Indeed, it is difficult to understand how a party which is so strenuous or the return of fugitive slaves can uphold the rights of naturalized citi zens who voluntarily return to the house of Bon dage. If South Carolina may reclaim its subjects who escape to free states, how can ells deny the kindred despotisms of Austria and France the less arbitrary power of re-enslaving their subjects when found upon their soil? It is notable how very conservative "democracy" is becoming un der the federal leadership of James Buchanan. It has abandoned all its progressive maxims, In both its foreign and domestic policy. The letter of General Cass is a practical illustration of the love felt by the Administration for the foreigners. .-Our foreign born fellows citizens" cannot be made too much of so long as the democratio lea ders want their votes; but their right to protec tion is not Lo be compared with the right of a slaveholder to his fugitive slaves.—Y. The affiidavit alludes to the confession of Mre. Sickles, copied from the Boston or New York papers, where it was generally . printed. The Act gives full jurisdiction to the Court of Sessions and to the Police Court of this city and county of San Francisco. His ,Itabititles are estimated at from $60,000 to $06,000. r TIM FIZZ NEGROES or MAILTLAWD.—The foot brought to notice by the recent Blaveholder's Convention, that the free blacks constitute more than one-eighth of the entire population in Mary land, excites no little eurprise. Few at the North were prepared to hear that they were so nume rous, though en examination of ,that much-ne glected volume, the census returns of 1850, would have revealed the elate of the cane. The Albany Evening Journal, sharing the general misappre hension, epeaks of the free negroes of Maryland as a "few hundred." Mr. Pearce, on the other hand, states their present number at 80,000. In the State of New York, by the census of 1850, we had 49,060, colored people. If they were so prtiportionally numerous here as in Maryland, we should have to-day 400,000, or lon Limes the actual number. A Baltimore journal says that more than half the free blacks of the State reside in that City, where the returns of the Savings Banke, as well as the condition of the churches and societies supported by them, evince their perfect ability to take care of themselves when they have en opportunity for employment and Improve it. In Union county on Monday, the WI, the early wheat was being harvested, and the yield was better than ever known before in that part of the state. In the extreme southern part of Illinois the same abundant harvest, was being gathered in. In Alexander, Johnson, Pope, Pulaski, Gallatin, Williamson, Franklin, Jackson, Hardin, Union, Wayne and Randolph counties the wheat in reported as good as ever known in the State. The prospects of a good crop of corn are re ported as very favorable. The growing corn in many places is said to be from three to four feet high, and looks "black and healthy." If noth ing happens to the crop it will be an excellent one, and fully entitle the modern Egypt to the designation of the " Land of Corn." The peaches are in groat abundance in all Southern Illinois. They aro now about the size of hen's eggs, and the trees are loaded with Them. Apples, pears, and other kind of fruit, usually grown in those parts, are said to prom ise a wonderful y 101,1.-111.
