Joseph, brought up on the coast among sailors and fishermen, was indebted to this rode apprenticeship of life for a part of his physical and moral energy. Already at that time the child was seen to possess most of the qualities since developed in the man. Adventurous and brave, he displayed in his intercouree with hie comrades an extraordinary energy. Garibaldi entered the Sardinian navy at an ' early age, and soon distinguished himself byhis Courage and coolness. Implicated in 1834 in the insurrectional movement, this young seaman, compromised at Genoa on account of a liberal conspiracy, found himself compelled to take refuge in France. lie traveled on foot across the mountains to Nice, where ho lay concealed two days in a friend's house, who, by dressing him iu the clothes 'of it farmer of his, got him across the Var. After passing two years at Marseilles, chiefly in pursuit of his Mathematical studies, Garibaldi embarked In an Egyptian cor vette• to go and serve as a naval °Meer in the fleet of the Bey of Tunis. Post, speaks very disrespectfully of the late Convention: "Tbe mountain has been in elevens labor, and the mouse that has been brought forth is small indeed. We have had here, within the lost day or two, an uninvited party of gentlemen from Cho counties of this State, calling themselves 'The Slaveholders' Convention.' Tbio affair was star ted on the eastern shore of Maryland, and grew out of the circumstance of a mob that tarred and feathered an inoffensive citizen of Kent county, charged with being an tabolitioutst; Tido body of rues invited themselves to come to Baltimore, where they have no sympathizers except a cer tain Zeal', If. They were headed by on old ex-Jodge, who, perhaps, did not know any bet ter, and backed up by our eastern share senator, who soon found out that ho was making a fool of himself, and so backed down. The people here have given them the regular cold shoulder, and they hare generally departed fur their homes (to enjoy the blessings of slavery and look after their corn and niggers,) ashamed of themselves and of eaoh other. . They Bay, !Baltimore ain't what they took her for,' and if they are spared, they will never come here any more; indeed some of them go rho length of threatening to 'Marie out this aboli tion city:and will, hereafter, If all will only 'jinn,' send their produce for ease to a southern port, and In ther zeal and wrath, they have already a project on foot to establish a city and a market in one of the many eligible pine ewampe between this and the mouth of the Potomac. They say, 'Wo ain't to lake it as we have done; no we ain't; Baltimore has cheated us long enough, and now insulted us, and we'll quit her.' Without joking, there never was aeon a eel of more piti able, crestfallen donkeye than those same slave holding country gentlemen, who pa= hither un der the impression that they were about thebig goat men iu the country, found themselves con temptible, (they ought to have known that be fore,) anekati disappeared to-be seen no more. I send you a copy of the last day's proceed ings, I think one gentleman proposed that every poor man in the State 'ought to have one nigger. ' As there are not niggers enough to give every poor man one, encouragement would have to be given immediately to more EVECIBiTO breeding and importing. SOCIAL LIFE NOT TEE CLUMP EEC OF MAN.-A popular lecturer at Chicago lately advocated with some plausibility, the drinking and dancing customs of other countries, as a means of pro moting social intercourse, and adding to the animation and grace of general society. To this the Congregational Herald replies with some very apt remarks: "The value of social life has been unduly mag nified. It is of far less moment than domestic life. That a man should please and entertain his neighbors or acquaintances, for a few mo ments or hours, it may be, while he is with them dwindles into Insignificance by. the side of the question, whether he makes happy the compan ion of his life, and the children whose weal or woe for time and eternity, depend much on a father's influence. That a woman should be fascinating at the social party, what is it com pared with shedding the radiance of love and kindness on husband and children in her family? Any social life that would interfere with these most sacred home duties, will prove a curse, not alone to the families immediately affected, but to society at large. We shall owe no gratitude to him who shall so solve the social problem as to disturb the happiness of the fireside." Tux Coast anon.—The corn crop has several forminable enemies to contend with, and among them Is the grub, which sometimes literally de stroys whole fields, and frequently damages the crop severely. One of the beet and meat judiei ons remedies, perhaps the very best over sug gested, is the application of salt as soon as the plant makes its appearance above ground, pre pared in this way: Take one part of common salt and three parts plaster or gypsum, and ap ply a table spoonful around each hill, and it will he a sure protection. The mixture should not come In contact with the young plants, as it may destroy them. This method has been tried over and over again by some of the best farmers in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Jersey, and when properly applied, has never failed to be perfect ly successful. We hope our farmers, who have reason to fear the depredations of the grub, this season, will try the mixture, leaving a few alter nate rows of corn without the salt, and cop musicale the result to us —Germantown Tele graph Tut. Every one, nays he, "seems curious to see him, I doubt if Queen Victoria or Presi dent Buchanan would 'draw' better. On the prairies yesterday, half a dozen miles from any house, two travellers stopped our coach to learn whether he was on board. Ono farmer asked me a dey or two since, if Horace Greeley hod felled in business, nod was going to Pike's Peak to dig gold: One of the drivers inquired to day Hit was true that Horace Greeley was about to start A newspaper at Manhattan ! And at one of the stations yesterday, an Indian girl colon teered, the Information that 'Horace Greeley, in hie okt white coat,' had just passed in the coach before us. As important decision 1M.9 rendered iu New York city, by Judge Culver, on Friday, acknowl edging the invalidity of slave marriages. it. N. Warwick, a colored M. E. preacher, was former ly a slave in North Carolina, and was married, in the method of the slaves, to Winnie, also a Blare, by whom he had twelve children. In 18214 he was set free, came to Williamsburg in 1831, and married another woman. Ilia brat wife has since become free, and prosecuted him for bigamy. The defence wan that Warwick bad no expectation of her ever becoming free, or he would have felt morally, bound to her, and that legally he was not. The Judge ruled that slaves being obatiels could not make contracts, and the End marriage was therefore a nullity. As Judge Culver is opposed to slavery, this decision is re garded as very impoitani, because based en tirely on the local lane of the 6outhera States.
