Come • lbw UMMI. it you osonot 11i3 y longer I . ;1 Clams- Coon, —Tho sessions of this Court oommonced en Monday morning, Justices Grier and 14'04101m un the bench. The cases on the were then called and marked for trial, hearlog or oontitinauce. On motion of Jutlgo Hepburn, It I'. Roberta arid l 11 Wilson, of Beaver county, were ad mitted to practice in this court. There aro several cases of some Importance on the trial list. There are seven oases (we think that Is the number) against Allegheny city, for coupons issued to railroads. Messrs. Bell sought to have the ewes continued, but Joseph Knox, Eig , for the plaintiff, insisted upon going to trial. There are also a goodly number of cases marked for trial in which the railroad men sad city of Pittsburgh are parties. There are also railroad cases in which Crawford, Lawrence and Beaver counties are concerned. The list of cases for trial is muoh longer than is usual in this court. The first cue disposed of was that of Sloan vs. I\llnebeld, of Greensburg, Westmoreland county. Here the bill was reinstated by order of the Court. Order of Sw•ion.—Judge Orier reworked that almost every where, rove in Pittsburgh, people took their theaters at a more civilised hour then one o'olook. With the consent of the bar he would have but one session of the Court mask day, and that from In A. ss. to r. m Jurors would do well to have their landlords provide good dinners for them as soon after J P a as convenient. Afternoon Session. —ln the afternoon of Mon day the case of U. S. vs "James P. Hayes. It appeared from the statement of the cane by R. Biddle Roberts, Deg , for the Government, that Hayes was appointed under the administration of John Tyler, sub-agent of the Chippewa In dians, and gave regular and proper bond in legal amount for the just discharge of bin official duties as said cub -agent. The bondsmen are James P. flays, Samuel flays, and D. R. M'Noir, and the bond wan dated June li, A l ga B44, in the sum of $l O , OOO Certified accots show a balance in favor oft ho Government of $0,576 57; but the balance claimed by the Government and for which this suit is brought is $3,003 40 The accounts ware drawn up in voluminous papers sod were rend by Mr. Roberts for the Government, with dates and sums of money in large amounts Here he rested. Edwin P Stanton, Esq , appeared for the de fendants Ile showed that Hays was turned out of office on the 2d August, 1847, sod after some mouths he was again restored to office. Never theless the government went en to chargo hint with sums of money and keep his accounts no though he was still in office. When he was re moved from office his bond was discharged and if the government saw fit to reinstate him, it was their lookout to renew his bonds. Mr. Stan ton read a letter from the Solicitor of Treasurer showing that as late as September, 184;f, the accounts had not been adjusted; that the so counts submitted previous to that time and which have been produced in the case are merely speculative. Mr. S. then went on to show that by a compa rison and statement of accounts drawn from the books of the Treasury Department, that Heys was at no time, while these sureties were held, indebted to the government. On the final elate meat of Lis accounts it appeared that one item of $1•I'JI was held as snopended for further ex• amination, and besides these several items of ac counts such as for bores hire andfor ninety days work at $5 per day. The latter item of $450 I was the only one absolutely disallowed. These I items would balance the $300440, or nearly so. Tne Judge charged the jou that there was no shadow of a cane made out by the government that if they saw fit to discharge the man from office and afterwards reappoint him, tt was their look-out to get new sureties. Not doing so, the government bad no claim at nil The jury re turned a verdict for defendant, subject to such motion no may hereafter he nindr upon the in. Kruclion of the Court to jury. E=l HONOR TO WHOM HONOII.—We could not record a fortieth part of the rumors Ilan were flying every where on Saturdaxafternoon, in reference to the fire in which the ten steamers were burned, and about the various steamboate that did and did not help in the time of dare necessity. Some were loud in condemnation of this and that man, and others equally loud in their praise Of course we do not take cognizance of half the atones, but we believe it in as well authenticated as any thing need be, that Capt. Shepherd, of the South America, broke the mans of steamers and opened the apace over which the flames did not pass The South America was loaded and jast getting ready to leave. She had on only 20 IN. of steam . She, the Economy, the lowa, and the Hazel Dell, were lying side by aide, and fastened to the same ring-bolt on the lebee. Capt. Shepherd was in the More of Long 5 Doff. He heLdt the alarm of fire, and rubbed with the greatest speed on board the South America. Charles Barnes, Esq., of the firm of Flack & Barnes, cast off the fas tenings from the shore, while the beat was get ting intense. All hands on hoard the South America were set to shove her out, and all the steam she had up was put to work. It is said that in four minutes from the first alarm, which was sounded on board the Minerva, the South America, with the Economy on one side, loaded, and the lowa on the other, was backing out into the river. The withdrawal of then, three boats left an open space over which the flames did not pass. The Clem Dean seemed bent at one lime on rushing into the "jaws of bell," but she was saved by Miners. Batchelor, Finney and her crew, aided by the crowd on shore. These Kona for the salvation of properly may seem small mailers but when one reflects that the heat was almost intolerable at a distance of two or three hundred feet, the importance of ready and fear leen action, finch as we mention above, becomes apparent. We were informed that Col. Finney, of the Eureka InsUrance Co., who was on board the Minerva, which boat was just leaving for Wheel ing as the fire broke out, offered Captain Gordon $2OOO, if his boat would take bold of the Henry Graff and pull her out. The fire was still con fined to the Graff at the moment. The Captain was about to do it, but a company of young la dies from Wheeling, who were on board the Mi nerva, and saw what was going on, became very mush terrified, and shrieked and screamed so loudly, that the only thing to be done wan to go on and leave the boats to their fate. Under the circumstances, we think the Captain acted right. FAST Tine.—We see from time to time bril liant deecriptlons in our city contemporaries of great time made here and there on the Cleve land and Pittsburgh or Central Roads. We have already said what we think about this reckless driving, and when some of these days we have with horror to record a score of broken necks, shall recur to the fact, that we did all in our power to discourage the mad driving that can bring but one result. Theo the eutogizere of fast time will have moral reflections about the folly of such speed, as if they too will not be to a certain extent responsible for any catastrophe that may occur. APPOINTMEAT.—LieUL. James Chalfant, of the Jackson Independent Blues, has been appointed Adjutant of the First Regiment of Allegheny county volunteers, by Col. Hiram Holtz. The Regiment will meet for parade at White Hall, on the Browneville road, viz miles out, on Teen. day, 24th inet. The Second Regiment of the Washington county volunteers, commanded by Col. Samuel B. Bentley, will meet fur inspection and parade at Valley inn, on Wednesday, 11th hot. STATIMENT or TUT. hibMONOASUELAV LLIIY BANK Circulation Duo Doporitors Bids discounted Dao from Banks and Bankers.. 'Judge 111*Candless pre sided, and Judge Veech, of Uniontown, one of the Vice Presldents, being present was warmly welcomed by all the members. Hon. A. W. Loomis presented to the Society a handsomely bound volume of his address in November, 1958. N. It. Craig, Esq., presented by the hand of Mr. Digham, a book containing "The Minutes of Conferences held at Fart Pitt under the direc tion of Col. George Crogham, with the Ohio and other Indians, In April and May, 170." gaits observable was the fact that the laid of these conferences, hero noted, was held on the 19th of May, 1708, exactly ninety-ono years before May 9, 1859, or yesterday. Mr. Bighorn also.prceented from Mr. Craig, the original order book of Gen. William Irwin, In the years 1781-2-3, at that time commanding at Fort Pitt. The Society ordered these-gifts to be preserved in the archives of the Society, and passed a vote of thanks to the generous donors. An essay was then read by J. T. Bighorn, Esq., on the early explorations in the Ohio Val ley. It was replete with Interesting historical facts, and is ono of the valuable papers which the Historical Society has already drawn out. Material enough has already been contributed to form an interesting volume, and the Society is now in a fair way of becoming one of oar insti tutions. Mr. Be.' address was ordered to be preserved in the archives of the Society for to lure publication. Mr. Vetch stated that he is about preparing for publication a memoir of George Croghan. This, we think, most be a book of rare interest and of special local salmi. Judge M'Candlees resides on the spot where Gan. Washington found Col. Croghan living in his cabin.
