Puma Dona& —A Aluscoolle Nobleman and his Yankee Bride.—The magical world has been occupied with the debut of Madame Gnerrabella, who is the daughter of a former American Consul to Liverpool, Mr. Ward. She is. like all her fair countrywomen, remarka ble for her great beauty. Her history is pecu liar. On the death of the Consul, Mrs. Ward left Italy, SO order to complete the musical education of her datightle. At Rome the beau ty and talents of the young lady attracted the attention of a young Russian nobleman, the Count 'Guerbel. As no other proposition but marriage was admisable, ( b e Count demanded Miss. Ward's hand, and they were privately married at Rome. A short time afterwards the bridegroom disappeared; and, altar the most heartrending anxiety on the part of the deserted wife end her mother, news was received of hie return to Ressia ; and when applied to for ex planation of his extraordinary conduct, he re turned for answer that he considered himself a free man, not having been married in the Greek oburch, and that Mee Ward was also at liberty to marry whom she pleased, without any fear of molestation from him. The bitterness and in dignation with which this communication was received can be well imagined ; hot the Ameri can mother was not- to be put down by thresh' or contempt—she immediately set forth with her daughter for St. Petersburg. There the Ameri can consul, taking lho affair in hand, laid the case before the Emperor Nicholas, who, Imme diately Bending for the Count, after administer ing a reprimand, declared it his imperial will that the marriage should be immediately per formed in the imperial chapel of the palace. Thie was accordingly done, and Miss Ward be came the Countess of Goethe' to all intents and purposes; but, the ceremony over, she withdrew nor would she over apply for ono farthing of the income which the Count ducat not, for the life of him, withhold from her, should she Italia upon claiming it. The Yankee ladies most eomowhat have surprised the Muscovite gentleman. tYOALeoO CRUSHED IX Tile Ice.—Lettera re ceived by the North Briton speak of numerous disasters to British whalers in the Arctic seas, a number of steamers and sailing vessels having been totally lost in the ice. A despatch from Peterhead, England, April 13tb, announces the arrival at that port of the whaling ship Narwal Beacham from Greenland, wbbah reports the total loss of fire ships (two of them steamers) while employed in Wrist/cries in the Arctic seas. They were the "Empress of India," an iron aux iliary screw steamer, launched at Newcastle in the early part of the year: The "Volunteer," another screw eleamnbip, belonging to lbe Tyne; the barque "Alert," of Peterhead, and "Milen- Ca, " of Fraserburgb, and a third barque, name at present unknown. It is ,opposed that they were crashed in the ice. The "Gertrude," of Bull, oleo sustained considerable damage in the Ice, and. the Narwal Deucbars reports having had a narrow escape. The "Empress of India" was a very fine vessel, 000 tone register and 100 horse power. According to reliable accounts furnished. thin gold region is superior to any district in Califor nia or Pike's Peak. The difficulty with it is that it is owned by individuals, and they are ig norant of this value of the property, and dread fully afraid of being cheated. There is one old farmer there who owns the richest part of it. lie plows it every now and then when he wants a nugget. Sometimes he turns up one worth $5O, sometimes one worth as much as $200. Ile lives miserably on this Lill hie necessities again drive him to the plow in quest of another piece of shining metal. A great many capital its made him splendid offers if he would permit them to mine on his small property, but he in variably refused, preferring to live the life of a dog in the manger on a farm of eighty or one hundred acres of land, which contains gold worth ten millions of dollars, but which he will neither work himself nor permit others to work, while be lives in abject poverty all the time. The pro ceeds of the mines at Charlotte last year amount ed to over half a million of dollars, and the gold was coined at the branch mint there. But it would easily yield, under energetic enter prise, ten or twenty millions. It is the richest gold region on this side of the Alleghenies, and far superior to Pike's Peak, about which so much noise Is made. A gentleman named Andrews, a doctor, of Charlotte, has in ills possession wonderful specimens of the gold of this district_ Ile is a great enthusiast on the subject, and pos sesses more information in relation to it than any person we met. If the farmers in the gold district of Charlotte would give the same privi leges to diggers as they get in California, ouch an avalanche of adventurers would descend upon them from the North as would make it in a short time one of the most rising and important places in the South, while the whole State would be improved beyond eonception. Henceforth, the Mormons, in accordance with the bloody canons of their church, may murder with impunity.
