Moncits CllOAE£os.—lllstory is a frog pond, full of croakers. From Thuoyditles and Ilerodo las down to Orote and Buckle—from Moses down to Motley, the lugubrious plaint resounds from the marshes of all eras. Things have always been going wrong; death has ever been in the pot. If we are to rely upon writers, there never was a time when the world turned smoothly on its axis, and there never will be. The past is one wide field of crime and desolation, and.the , future nn endless vista of woes greaten there' any yet experienced by the hapless humanraoe. How wearily and soul-sick sounds the voice of the wisest of men, Solomon, "There is nothing new under the sun." Now the prophets, the poets, the historians of all nations echo back the cry, "All is vanity and vexation of spirit." A certain modinful comfort is to be derived hero the end experience of mankind as attested by the chronicles of old. If things have always been in S bad, a very bad way, it is something to knew that people managed, after a fashion, to live on and worry through their trials. In spite of wars, ptstilences, and (mince innumerable, the powers of nature were kept steadily at work, the seasons came in duo order, the children of men were born, and food and raiment ode. quote to their wants were vouchsafed unto them. Life has never ceased to be a grateful boon to the eons of Adam There never was an hour when mankind with one consent sought release from the anguish of existence in universal sui cide. Nay, there was never a moment when the vast majority of mankind did not find the "fever called living" a delight, worthy of indefinite protraction. And yet the croakers have never ceased to croak. Themoralists and immoralists alike have abused the very thing of all others which they most highly prized; rho thing fog which the most of them would have bartered house and lands, name and fame, family and friends, even honor itself. Why is this - The Fliffieient anallet will be !mind in the fact that man was not born to be. sot intied "Fool" exclaims Carlyle, "deist thou not know that the very universe itself would not case thy cravings':" The farther aoswer is, that lite is too often misspent, not indeed wil fully misspent, but, by reason of 'ill annexed opportunity" and carnleesly guarded passion, brought to a profttleso conclusion. No wonder then that there should hare been and should suit e,,a110 tie I 0 be an abundance of croakers Poi, if of - old:mg rill! commues, this much May be said in favor of the modern croaker lie cannot croak with the hearty good will, the rim end vociferousness of his predecessors: and this because she one all in•portnni Mel:llia' of sue ce,sful croaking has been taken away. The croaker, like any other protractionsl artist, needs a -large and appreciative audience Such an audience is rather harrl to feud now -s-daye, ow ing nor to the fact ibo theligeterl r good croak. tog haveceased to exist. 0 ,e,li, have b -,.. so 4. r ----.1 and Intik f hopeful mot tee t isle, alr ~r etoreivri-s he cr oa k 40 sweetly. can ~11 1.. But the general diffusion of knowledge and the still more gegrral necessity of working pretty hard for • living. with the tummies which for the most part attends hard work in thle country. has thrown such n daintier on the modern croak ing vendee that an entire change of programme is netsted. flow the croaker will set about ef fecting this change it is imposaible to tell. but the experience of the past ensures no that it will be done Perhaps a return to the good old fashion of croaking, of which the berthen is "nothing is Were to coon and nothing pant," will bo relished by a ilorrowful public, and hate a run equal to hoops. Who can pay If it were worth one's while to do eo it:1011110 thing as argue with a croaker, It might ho said that although thine have always gone wrong, and are always going to worse, that to no reason why we should trouble ourselves about them.— On the contrary, it ix a good and cogent reason why we should not trouble ourselves- The sun will certainly net to-morrow night, and very likely there will he it great many after it, but that is no reason why we shonld go supperless to bed. Nay, if wo are too Twos to get up nor- - (Cog on brilliant es gas, we can at least eel fire to a camphene lamp, and be as jolly as it is pos sible to be in 'view of an explosion whilh may consign us to a horrible death. But wallpro no quarrel with the croakers.— SOME ofiT6m mean very well and all of them think themselves very wise. There is doubtless to use for frogs in the spring of the year, their caeophonetic concerts are truly musical. We are not to supersensitive as the French nobility, who, while residing temporarily in their chit tenor, forced the peasants to whip the ponds all night to keep the frogs from croaking. No, the batrachian croakers may have fair play—so long as their complaints do not affect the growth of early peas, and their human brethren, so long as they do no positive harm, may go scot free, 1,0 far as we are concerned.—Ealainore A ',nears. AMITHER SMALL LEAR In TUE TREASURY —lt appears from a statement made in the Washing ton National Era, by one evidently acquainted with the facts, that on the eve of the adjourn ment of Congress, Senator Johnson, of Arkansas, eneceeded in fastening an amendment upon the Indian Appropriation bill, appropriating $lO,- 000 for the following purpose ; It seems that certain emigrants from Arkansas to California were attacked on the way by Indians, and that several heads of families were murdered, but, by some means, their children escaped. These chil dren are now in Utah, and the Arkansas senator moved the above appropriation to defray the ex penses of their removal to the place of their na tivity or residence in Arkansas. Senator Brod erick suggested that the proposition involved a profitable job to some one, and was, therefore, opposed to it: but Mr. Johnson,of Arkansas, as sured him that there was nothing sinister lurk ing beneath the face of the ostensibly benevo lent motion. Senators acquiesced, and the amendment appropriating $lO,OOO for the object specified was engrafted on the Indian appropria tion bill. A few days after the adjournment, the affair was brought to the attention of the Secretary of the laterior, accompanied by the additional in formation that two persons, one of them the brother-in-law of Senator Johnson, and the otp er a friend of the then Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Denver, had already been appointed to proceed by way of Panama and thence to Utah, for the purpose of restoring the children to their homes in Arkansas. The Secretary at once de clared that lie would annul the appointment, and that the parties should not proceed on their mission. -But be was told that they had already been paid twelve hundred dollars each, and that they were on their way to California, with near ly one-fourth of the ten thonsand dollars in their pockets. Tho Era adds, that the Indian agent In Utah, desiring to return to the States, had offered to bring the children with him at a cost to the government of about six hundred dollars. Tue STILATT3 Ores.—Matlatate April 4.—The Sentinel of this morning says: "On Saturday evening we received intelligence from the agent of the Detroit and Militattkee Railway, that the City of Cleveland had arrived at Orand Raven, basing comp through the Straits of Mackinac the night previous. The City ft, Cleveland experi enced no difficulty in coming up, and ae the Straits are entirely free front Ice, we may ex pect one or two additional arrivals from the East to-day." MORI 011/VALIIT. —A Savannah paper states, with "regret to have to record such unpleasant occurrences, but greater regret that they are not without provocation," that 'last Week It became known that a man by the name of Hazzard, front Providence, had written an.aecount of the recent sale of the Wan derer to a Rhoda Island paper, In which false statements were made, reflecting upon Mr. C. A. L. Lamar and others. Mr. Lamar took the earliest opportunity, after learning his whereabouts, to call on Mr. Hazzard. Demand ing of him whether he wrote the letter attribu ted to him, and receiving en affirmative answer, be promptly slapped him in the face with the back of his hand. Mr. Lamar than elated to Mr. H. that, as he had slandered him in the public prints, he had resented the insult by a blow, and was ready to give him any satisfaction ho might demand, but that, he must leave the city by the next train, which he accordingly did." 1321311 It will, no doubt, be news to the public to , learn that the power of banishment from the City of Savannah, if not from the State of Geor gia, is vested in !de. C. A. L. Lamar, who, we believe, has never been elected to such an office. It will be still greater news to those gentlemen who uphold the "Code of Honor," that it is chivalrous to follow up an offer of satisfaction for a slap on tho face by ordering the aggrieved party to quit the scene of tho insult and the place whore the satisfaction would be obtainable. To the minds of most people; however, the slap ping of a man's face for having written "an ac count of the recent sale of the Wanderer to a Rhode Island paper," will suggest more of the rowdyism of the bully than of the chivalry of wounded honor.—N. F. Times. INTERNATIONAL COURTESIEL—The conduct of the• Governor of Victoria, Vancouver's behind, in refusing permission to the Americans to fire a salute on Washington's birthday, shows a mark ed difference from the more gentlemanly feeling of the captain of the English PO gun ship C:esar, at San Juan del Norte, who not only dressed his ship with colors op that day from sunrise to sun set, the same as our own ship Jamestown, but at noon both ships fired a national salute of 21 guns. The next day the officers of the James town give a splendid dinner to the senior officers of the Caner. It Is pleasant to hear of such ex changes of national courtesies on these occa sions. In excavating the grounds lately covered by St. Peter's Church, at Albany, the remains of Lord Howe, killed at the battle of Lake George, were found. The Journal nym—"There are pereone now living in this city who distinctly recollect the fact of their removal from beneath the English Church, as it was then called, to the present St. Peter's. It is alleged by them that the coffin was covered with canvass, and that saturated with tar: that it was opened, and ex hibited the heft. in a good state of preservation, dressed in the fashion of the day. The coffin was enclosed in another and then deposited nn der St. Peter's Church.
