A Into London paper remarks of the winter and spring of 1858-'59 in England: "The night ingale was heard in Eogland on the ISth of February. That is a remarkable foot. It has been repeatedly heard duce; so the declaration may be believed. Over the greater part of the pasturage of the kingdom the grass has not ceased to be green throughout the winter, and the roses and honeysuckles put out aboota al most as soon as their latest 'caret' dropped. All the spring flowers of our gardens welcomed, open-eyed the coming in of March. Tho elm, Lombardy, poplar, and thorns, have buret their buds at the very beginning of the month, while the willow-catkins have overhung the streams an in April. Apricots and peaches were in bloom above a week ago; and In the fruit growing coun ties, where the cherries and pears aro blooming already, the growers are in a state of high ten don. A touch of frost between night and morn ing would cost hundreds of pounds each to hun dreds of proprietors of orchards. 'The oldest inhabitant' of many an agriculture' district hardly remembers so mild a season. He must go back more than twenty years for any winter that can bear a comparison with It. TEM CENTURY AND rtniSsur RELIGIOUS DAILY. —la regard to the new daily paper about to be established on "strictly Christian principles," in New York, the Century says: The enterprise referred to has been on foot several months, under the patronage, we are told of sevonevangellcal churches, which are repro!, eented, or to be represented ins Board of True tees. It originated. about the same time with The Century, and grew out of the lISMIS want in our newspaper press, of a higher standard in morals and politics. it was then supposed that the two projects could bennited in one; but dif ferences were elicited in conference on the lab ' jeer, which made them irreoonollable. The Cen tury could not adopt the Milli= feature; neith er could it ignore (as was required by the even gelloalreprecentations) that great question which underlies all the discussions of the day in State as well as in Church, and on which it is our de sign to speak candidly and in no sectional spirit, whenever oocattion'may require, viz., the quec lion of negro el:ivory. The quantity of land cultivated in 1856 was. 511,933 acres; in 1858, 755,784; being an increase of 244,771 acres. This is exclusive of land fenced in for grazing purposes. The crop of wheat for the year 1858, is set down at 3,568,669 buehels; and that of barley at 5,382,717. This is 218,798 more bushels of barley than the amount raised in the whole Union in 1850, according to the census. in the cultivation of grape and manufacture of wine, the Golden State of the. Pacific already stands foremost in the confederacy. The in crease in this intereat has been ono hundred and fifty per cent. in two years. The number of vines in 1854 was nearly 4,000,000, and of this large number one third is found in a single coun ty—Los Argelos—whilo the average yield of each vine, is estimated at fourteen pounds. Du ring the year 1858, there were manufactured in California, of wiurt 385,000 gallons, and of bran. dr 10,000 gallons, making a total of nearly 400,- 000, It 1 /Estimated that in 1860, 1,000,000 gallons oflheitir Ileum will be manufactured in -California. A considerable share of attention has been de voted to the rearing of sheep, for which exper ience has demonstrated that the soil and climate of California are admirably adapted. During the year 1858 there were exported 1,851,671 pound!' of wool, at a home valuation of $189,634 while Um number of cheep in the State at the pres ent time Is estimated at 6 50,000—being more than double thi number estimated for 1856. So far as the mining intercent are concerned, it is shown that this department of State and National wealth is increasing In importance in almost every section of the State. At the pres ent time there are lire thousand eleven hundred and twenty-six miles of artificial water courses constructed for mining purposes, at an expense of thirteen end a half millions of dollars, while the number oc,mills erected in 1857, for quartz mining, is stattsi at one hundred and thirty-eight, at a cost of $1,76300. On the let of Novem ber, 1858, the Dumber of mills bad increased to two hundred and seventy eine, costing $3,275,- 000 A CRINZSR lieu. —A correspondent of the Balt iusoro American, thus describes a representa tion of the punishment of the wiokoil , after death according to the Buddhist theology, which he witnessed in the suburbs of Canton : .. . Pannix tiiiviv—The Providence Pon knot the following very soneible remarks in relation to the arts, of the female sex to attract the notice of gentlemen:— - “Newspaper editors have a great deal to say against the kind of education which our young ladies get, and the arts which they resort to, In attracting the notice and winning the affections of the gentlemen. They should remember that the young ladies aro educated fora market.— Furs tiro not wanted in Africa, and root beer is of no great account in Greenland. A modest plain- speaking, unaffected and very artless young lady will stand little chance of getting a hus band, where gewgaws, low-necked 'dresses. simpering, 6 igling, (lintel: and scheming are advertised for. Is it not shamefully true that the best young women are overlooked, even by very sensible young men, in their search for wives, while the butterflies are married off by ecoren? Undoubtedly, the 'tensible young man says to himself, when he sees these two ahem tern together, that :hts- would much prefer the artless, modest, plain speaking woman for a wife; but at the same time ho prefers the butter fly for flirting purposes; and he finds a year af terwards that flirting led to marriage, And mar riage to wretchedness. Whose fruits is It, more than bin own?" Ettearrx.—The National intelligence?, refer ring to the efforts of Mr. Everett, in aid of char itable institutions, says : "Ills a fact Enifficlently established that in those cities or towns which do not possess organized institutions for the relief of suffering or the ref formation of morals, benevolence flows in small and scattered rills. The want of concentration of means and co-operation of individuals engag ed in a common cause is attended by a wasteful or partial distribution of private resources; and besides, the absence of association engenders lan gum and apathy, which united and emulative effort forever banish from society. A nucleus ' of force determines motions in its own elemen tary parte and incites neighboring molecules to activity. And so it is with a nucleus of charity in a community, if life and healthful vigor are once imparted to it, zeal and bustle are called into being In its surroundings. Let a public hospital, epring up and be seen in successful op eration, and presently the germ of charity, which lay latent in the bosom of close-tiered is developed into a mote or less flourishing tree, bearing the fruit of donations. Builds house of refuge anywhere, and following its erection may be noticed an unreluetant general disposi tion to contribute towards its support. Estab lish a dispensary where none existed before, and friends and sympathizers of the poor and afflict ed become known and multiply. Nor is this all. Such institutions afford to the selfish, the wicked and the miserly, a lust opportunity for expiating in some sort, by mortuary bequest, a life of money grasping: In short the existence of such institutions as public infirmaries, hospitals &c., introduces a new order of things; a village be comes a town, a town a city. By joint labor, joint means reach objects not before attainable; a greater number of suffering are benetitted; and while the good do better, the wicked learn to do FRAUDS ox TEIZ tr. 8. Woods was only employed In making out the accounts. He had . no profit in the transaction, directlyor indirect ly. The Commissioner, in committing him, says the offence seems to have been committed by him partly through mistaken views of the law, partly through heedlesness of the means which he adopt ed to accomplish an end which he considered proper TEE editor of the Leavenworth (Kansas) Times, M.
