Large quanti ties are now being sent into San Antonio for sale. Q. W. Kendall, Esq., was one of the first pioneers in Texas wool*growiog, and his sheep now number several thousand. More reoently other gontlemen hove gone thither, and among them two of the Messrs. Leland, of tbe Metro* politon hotel, New York. Thh Gbowino Wheat Chop. —Daring Februa ry was carried on pretty extensively regarding the wheat crop; in some sections it was reported “drowned” out, and in others fro ten out; and speculation in Sour was stimulated by these reports, to no inconsiderable extent It is rarely that wheat is winter killed, and it seems strange that farmers should so dread that wbioh experience shews but seldom takes place. From the time wheat shoots” until it is oot and saved from the action of the weather, is that in which U is in greatest danger, and in whloh tbcorop is injured, or destroyed, almost, whenever such is the case. The advices we have from the various sections of the country, leave no doubt in'our minds that a large quantity of wheat has been sown", and that It looks well; and in point of growth, is a month earlier than it was at this season the last three years. From present appearances, a dry, 000 l May, will be absolutely neeessary to mature the crop ly, and with favorable weather daring that month and Jane, a large wheat crop may be expected. —Cm. (For (he. Dally PUtaburgh Unzatte.j Messrs. Epiturs : In a formor irticlo wo spoke of farming generally—crop*, stock, and fruit. This morning, March IlHb, looks a little squally fur the fruit, the peach And oarly cberrits are nearly in bloom nnd would hare been full b!< wn in a few days if the warm wfeatber bad continued! Tbe. fruit here is tbo subject of innumerable enemies. Reach worm, npple treo borer, curcnlio, pear/blight, aro tomo of tho difficulties we bavo to encoanter. Their dqp. redations are so strong and suocesifnl that thoy have a groat tendency to discourage the efforts of fruit (uliurisls, and tbo most valuable jkinds of fruit aro thoso that are tbo most subject to Attacks from their variou* enemios. Insects, worms and all that class of depredators aro liko another class of onemios I moan tbe human species of operators. They how over aro not liko most othor destroyers of fruit, for they go deliberately and carry away all—leave none fur tbo culiurist, while tboenrenlio and bis kindred are more liberal and leave you at loast a small por tion. Fruit thieves are but little if any bettor than chicken tbioves, both equally deserving tbo censure of all woll disposed persons. 1 have frequently grloved lo see my'fruit stolen and the trees broken and destroyed. Such vandalism tierits tho most severe punishment. By a liitlo expense and labor overy' person can bare frnit of bis own, and thon ho avoids being a thief, a dirty, mean, white livored thief. The fellow who woald steal frnit would steal any other thing ho might want if he could avoid de tection. Let frnit cnlturuts make it a point to scout tho whole brood from tbo ranks of civilized men. Thero ha* been much speculation [hero a-i to tbo causes of failure in the frnit crop wbeq it is not pro duced by frost. Frequently trees will pot put' forth fruit buds for several years, ami the difficulty appears to be on tho increase. Now why is this ? If this goes on fur a fe*r years more, wo will have but few pears or apples. Tbe trees appear thrifty and hearty yet no sign of blossoms. I have given this matter some attention, and think that tho soil is deficient in *omo clement necessary to prodace fruit. What that element is I have not folly determined bat tre <lo know that certain kinds of manare ap )lied to trees will produce an abundant crop. Fnit orchards most bo properly attended to, the trees: oust be care folly praned, and tbe ground well and scientifically cultivated. And hero lies Ibe great secret of fruit culture—to know the kind and quantity >f maanre lo* bo applied to particular kinds of fruit. 'llow aro wo to ascertain this ? Only by a knowledge tf chemistry .can wo understand it correctly—so as to bo able to |mako aeheraical analysis of our differen , soils. Thus [wefind tbe doGclency—what element is lacking. 'Here ihon is an important point gaino-.. Then for tbo remedy it must be either animal, regetable, or mineral matter that is to bo applied, >r it may be more than one is to be applied. But lir ust close for ' the present by urging oil to give this (object their attention, and in onr next we will say s jmetbing in regard to proper soil fur successful grain 'aising. Jl. Wool Gaowisti at me South.- -If tbe in creased alir.nl ion wbioh tbia important braocb of business has received in Texas and eome oiher Southern States < during tbe past year, augur* anything Tor the ttulfirc, it is safe lo pre dict that at no distant JmT wool-growing will rival interest iuTboso States where cotton is now tbe obief affile. Until very -re cently, sheep havo been rrm+d at tbe South only for their flesh, tbe tleeoe is>t entering into the calculation of their value.. Even to New Mexico, tbe moat extensive eheep grazing country on this continent, the wool is held in liule or no estima tion ; tho sheep aro never sheared, and what little wool is obtained, is gathered from (be bushes through which tbe vast herds are driveo. In the first case, the Block-raisers of. the South could find no market for their wool; in tbe acc ond, the New Mexicans were ignorant of its value, though at limes disposing of considerable quantities to itinerant merchants for trifiiog sains. Tbe Kansas City Journal furnishes tbe following interesting information relative lo shcep-calture in New Mexico : “The sheep having beon herded during the winter among the Talleys of the mountains, are early in the spring, driven in by the shepherds to the haciendas of their proprietors, which, for tbo most part, are in the immediate valley of the Rio Grand del Norte. While the abocp are grazing in the mountains, and while befog driven lo and fro from their winter quarters, they lose quite a large portion of their fleeoe among the bashes and prickly shrubs of the oountry. la driving a large flock through some patches of thorns, it is not uncommon for the sheep to lose from one to two thousand pounds of their wool. This is left banging to the bush es and is gathered up by the Peons, properly sacked, taken to the merchants or freighters en gaged in the commerce between Now Mexico and this city, sold for a trifling earn, (for the ignor ant and lazy “greasers," have no idea of the valno of the wool,) and by these traders is forwarded to Kansas City. L&stßam mer, trains arrived here bringing as many as ninety thousand pounds of Ibis wooUgathored in this manner. Shearing sheep is never done, though some of the more soientiflo and industri ous of the Peoos will take off a fleece with a com mon bnloher knife—ratßer a tedious and sarago operation. Though Urge shipments of Mexican wool are annually mode to this city, none has yet been received coming from tho bands of tbe shearer —it ha 9 all been gathered from tbo bushes. . At this season of tbo year tbo sheep will yield a fleece on an average of aboaL two pounds, per haps more—all of which, by proper manage ment, can be obtained from tbo proprietors at a mere nominal sum—ia some instances for nothing as tbo sheep oro known to thrive much better after being fleeced, which is all that the owners care about—as they raise them for tho caroaßS, ami the better and fatter tbo mutton, tbo better satisfied are tbe owners, for this is a meat thoy are extremely fond of. Indeed we may state that tbo writer has him self been told by proprietors oflarge flocks, that he would be welcome to the wool for tbe shear ing, os neither Mmselfor any of bis men made use of the wool or pells, except for making sad dle blankets for pack mulesr" As intimated above, a lucrative field for spec ulation is here offered to any inclined to risk tbe venture, even with so distant a market as Kansas City—tbe obief expense beiog the cost of transportation. Bat wo are told by tho Now Orleans Picayune, that a favorable market for wool now exists in that city. The amount re ceived is by no means equal 16 tbe demand, and cotton itself does not find a more ready salo in New Orleans than wool. With this greater ad vantage of a market near at hand, and the equal adaptation of tho prairies of Texas and adjacent States for grazing, wool-growing would be a mi ‘ T. B URGH GAZETTE. Anticipated IjfsnßEXcnoH.—The editor of this paper, and tbe agents of the Western Book Concern, are indicted in one of the counties of Virginia; for publishing and circulating matter calculated to produce an Insurrection among the slaves. The matter complained of was some thing in the Western Christian Advocate, soma time last fall. «• We learn from reliable authority, that in tbe county aforesaid tbero arc fourteen slaves in all. It is bat reasonable to sapposethatinlhis num ber thero may be two adjut men and two adult women. On tbe supposition that these men are the husbands of theso women, and that tbe re maining leu slaves aro tho children of these two women and these two men, we have two families, each containing five children, who may at any time rlso up in rebellion, and murder, kill, slay, put to death, and otherwise - take the lives of tbo w|bUe inhabitants of the county aforesaid. Wdare very florry'tbat anything we have said or Written, or oaused to be said or written, should induee these two colored men, and two colored women and ten colored children to rise up and put to 4*ath tho inhabitants of the coun ty aforesaid, ahd thus be guilty of insurrection and oivil war ag&instthe Baited Btates of Ameri ca, and bring upon our age and nation calami ties, with whloh Don Quixote's encounter with tbe windmill; or Homer's battle of tho frogs and mioe dwindles into insignificance.— IFe«- tem Christian .Adp. 23 d. Speculatiho in Potatoes.— The partial failore of the potato crop in tbe West, last year, in duced numerous adventurous persons to make pretty extensive investments in the article, and to make shipments to this market, and Now Orleans, in Order to take advantage of the con sequences of the intioipated scarcity. The re sult shows that this Is a pretty extensive coun try, and its agricultural resources varied and comprehensive. It will be eeeb, by referring to the letter of our Now Orleane correspondent, that the potato epeoulation, as faraa New Orleans is coneerncd, at least, has turned oat rather un fortunate for the owners, a fiat boat load having beou sold at 86c per brl, jast about enough to pay the freight and charges. Last Saturday tbe steamers Landis and Baird arrived at this port from New Orleans, and tbe former bad on board G 42 bbls potatoes, and the other 186 bbls, all shipped from New Orleans to this place to find a market. Tbe potatoes hav ing spent tbe winter in the sunny South, are sent book to tbe North, to give them a little of (heir native air, we suppose. About 3,000 bbls more arc on tho way from thence to this market, we understand.— Cin. Price Cur.
