Teaßint.K Accident os tub Oreat Wkstkrs Rmlway.— A terrible accident happened on iho Great Western Railway, on Saturday morning, about 2 o'clock, which i 3 only execciod in itfl wholesale slaughter by the calamity of the Des jardincs bridge. It appears that the heavy rain storm of Friday had washed away about 251) feet of the track whioh passes along the side qt a mountain about eevcn~tmleß west of Hamilton. Tho road here Is some fifty feet abovo tho gorge, and right in the midst of the blinding snow storm/nbont two o'clock on Saturday morning, the Express train from Detroit, composed of a baggage, emigrant, and two first class passenger coaehes, and a sleeping car, containing, all told, between 80 and DO persons, came along and plunged dawn the abyss. All except the sleeping car went to the bottom of the gorge, and wer© broken and mashed into thousands of pieces. The couplings of the sleeping car broke, and by Bomo means Us progress-Was arrested, when part way down the embankment, and it was left with the forward end crußhed into fragments, standing at an angle of 45 degrees, with its hind wheels resting upon the track. A Mr. Braid, formerly master-mechanic of the road, was sitting up in the car, engaged in conversation with the conductor of tho car, and was thrown forward and instantly killed. This was the only person injured to any extent, in the sleeping car, where both our informants were. The scene which followed it is utterly impos sible to describe. Every light was extinguished and nothing could- be seen. Abavo the roar of the tempest, however, could bo heard the shrieks and groans of the wouoded and dying. After much difficulty a light was procured, and those wbowerc able to work proceeded to extricate the sufferers from the wreck. The task was a difficult and almost impossible ono under’the circometanccs, as the wounded had to be lifted upon the track by ropes. Tho locomotive hod tender were completely broken up, and nearly buried out of sight. Tho engineer and fireman were L Bluntly killed. Niao dead bodies were taken oat of the ruiDP, however, before noon, and a largo number badly injured, in fact most of them who went down the embankment were more or less injured. At tho time the accident occurred, many were asleep and had laid aeidc their extra clothing, so that they were exposed in eome instances half naked to the peltiogs of the storm Many ladies were without bonnets, shawls, or shoos. When modt-of the wounded were lifted in to tho sleeping car, it was fouud that it began to give and threatened to fall over into the abyss. Just at this moment, to the horror of all present, a locomotive was beard coming down upon them from the west. A large number of persons, re gardless of their own safety, rushed np tho track shouting frantically The engineer finally hoard theta, und bucceedod in popping the engine within a few fort of them i 'Vh* driver.of (bis locomotive, nfier learning ft-jt had bappeued, went back with Uis ougiur. dfc-l wod not beard from again . k The unsafe ri.n.iui.-.n of iif sleeping car ren dered it necessary to remove tho wounded, and they were taken and laid on ftattrassca, cuahtoas and whatever could be maddravailable, upon the ground, white the survivors 4ook uirna In hold ing blankets over them to proieot them from the storm For four <!«•/ a half th;s state id Uamciigii'*' lhingt» eoniinm-d, the wounded lying in their igoniee. before aqj oesinianca arrived. The conductor dispatched a brakemcn soon after the accident l» Dandae—only one and a half miles distant—to telegraph to Hamilton for asKietHhce. On bis arrival thero he found the telegraph lines down. And bo at once set out on foot for Hamilton to carry the Intelligence. About 7 a in. s special train from HatniUoo arrived with succor They foond the survivors in a deplorable condition. Mangled, braised and bleeding, chilled and cold, yet still with heroic courage, attempting to relieve each other’s sufferings. There Wus one physiciau on the train, who did all in his power to relieve the sufferers until succor arrived, when the greater part of the killed and wounded were taken to Copetown—a small station—near where the ac cident look place. A number were also taken to Hamilton. Buffalo Express. Nkw Jkrsky Srsator.— ln reference to the election of Mr. Ten Eyck as United States Sen* ator for New Jersey tho Newark Dally Adrerturr says; “Tho election of Mr. Ten Eyoklo the United States Senate ia received with universal satis faction among all branchosof the Opposition, And no niurtncr of complaint comes even from tho Democrats as to tho fitness of the man to repre sent the interests of'Ncw Jersey iu the National Councils Ho ia a true Jerseymon, having sprung from an honored ancestry, who did their country good service in revolutionary times, and have filled several •offices of trust sinco. His election will tend to harmonizo and cement the recently divided Opposition in all parts of tho Stale, and especially in the fifth district, which is perfectly satisfied with the-rcßult. Mr. Ten , Eyck is educated in tho same school of politics to which tho most brilliant of our statesmen have been pledged, and in which the best of our people'willjjympalhiso; and all parties havo reason to congratulate themselves on bo happy a result from the anpromit'iog circum stances which preceded iL 1 ' Brown, Cuba, and tub “Union.’ —Tho“Eve- : niug /’o.w'’ uoticos a fact of some political sig nificance—namely, that Mr. Buohanao’s organ, the Washington Union, rebukes, rather thau en dorsee, Senator Brown’s unprincipled Tammany Hall Cuba speech—but (we quote the Post) “not because tho speech was a dirty one, nor because it was so thoroughly unprincipled, but because it was indiscreet. “Tho editor goes on to say: “Senator Brown might indulge in as muoh smutty talk as pleased his tastes and tbo tastes of bis audience—he might propose ns much wholesale plunder and bloodshed ns bo choose hut he ought not to have divulged the objects of his party so bluntly. Ho ought not to bAvo said that the design of Cuban annexation was to en large the area of slavery ; or, at any rate, if he must speak on the topic, ho ought to have dis guised it in eomo circuitous pbrAsc ” A “Pirn's Peakkh, 1 ' writing from St Joseph Mo., on the 12th, Bays that town is full of the “Peakcrs and that “little rats of mules sell for;” $150.” Hundreds of persons are starting for tho mines oo foot, “with nothing hut a cotton sack and a few pounds of crackers and meat, and many with hand carts and wheel-barrows.” Tho “expresses” are Ihusdeficrihed: There are expresses going ouL nearly every day; but such expresses! Four little mules to one common Chicago wagon. They ono hundred pounds of baggage apiece for twelve men, and charge Item apiece for the privi lege of wading after the wagon and pulling it out of the mud. Thb Richmond Dispatch says that an intelli gent gentleman of that city, recently from Cuba says Lbat, “except among a few persons engaged in tho American trade, the opposition there to fitlibuslerism and annexation is universal. They have no more desire to be annexed to the United States than Lc. isiaqa has to be annexed to Spain." “Of all sections in this country,” adds the Dispatch, “the Soalh is the very last thot should disturb (he rights of Spain in Cuba.” Clamow Rivxe. —There‘was a good riso in the Clarion river last week—was two feet too high for rafting, for a short time. Manuribo i» Tins Hill rou Corn. —The ques tion oi applying the usual domestic or bamma narCß lo oorn in the hill at plantiog, or over the whole surface beforo that lime, is one which we have not seen particularly discussed in our ag ricultural journals, though often mentioned as practiced, or vice versa, in accounts of the cul ture of this grain From observation on Ibis point, we conclude it is more common inNew- ITampsbire than elsewhere, where Indeed it was learned from the aboriginal oorn-growera. We have heretofore, from results in oor own expe rience, recommended manuring in the hill, in addition to a good dressing over tho whole field, as productive of an essential improvement in the crop—giving an earlier and stronger start, which advance it keeps through tho whole period of growth. Some experience in corn growing, comparing, hill manuring with its application over tho whole surface, ore given by Mr. Baker of Oak Hill, in a recent A. E. Farmer— and thinking it will In terest, wo oondenso the same for our read era. Five plots of an acre each, were planted the l&Bt of Mft7- On the first, twenty loads of long manure were spread and plowed under, eight inches deep. On the second, ten loadfl of fine barn-yard manure were Bpread on the surface after plowing, and thoroughly harrowed before marking. Tbo third aero was manured in tho hills—two quarts of very fine stable manure to each. Tho fourth received in the hill, one quart of compost—two parts muok, two parts hog ma nure, and ono part each of lime and ashes. The fifth acre, for the pnrposo of comparison, received no manure. The kind of corn planted was the yellow smut or red blace, the kernel of whioh is large and fiat, and the ear good size. Making no account of the soft corn, it produced as follows: No. 1, 84 bushels of corn; No. 2, 00 bushels; No. 8, 99 bushels ; No. 4. 95 bush els; No. 5, 08 bushels. From theso results, he concludes that for present profit, manuring in tho hill is the best, and dooomposed barn manure harrowed in, produces moro effect than green dung plowed under—ot least on the first crop. Most commercial manures, as guano, super phosphates, poudretie, ete., have been applied in the hill exclusively, so wo have no means of comparison of the effect of the same broadcast. Of fertilizers of domestio production, hen ma nure has more generally been applied in the hill for corn than any other material. It Is plenti ful, of a concentrated f characler, and readily prepared and applied, while there can be no question as lo the profitarising from its judicious use. As hinted before, this manure and others of liko character, give the young shoots an early and vigorous Btart, and enable it the sooner to strengthen itself, by extending its roots to more distant slores of food. The effect of manuring in the hill exoluslvely, would seem lo be less calculated to benefit the next crop than if applied over the whole ground, though the active or thoroughly decomposed character of the fertilizers thus used woald leave little benefit to bo expected the second year. But we leave tho question with our readers, simply remarking that while we would commend plentiful broadcast manuring in all cases, we would also advise the application of some .con centrated fertilizer la the hill, believing it will in all eases prove profitable by forwardiog and increasing the crop. lodian corn cannot well be surfeited by high breeding—and above most grains, uses and repays a plentiful supply. —Country Gentleman.
