With our weekly edition of to-day we send forth the full proceedings of the Into Republican County Convention, tto letter of Gen. Moor head defining his position, and 'other articles pertaining to 'the nominations ; and it Is but meet and proper that ye should 'accompany them with a brief sketch of the ,nominees. The nominee for Congress .in this district, Gen. JA3EZS K. Moonnann, is one of the people. Ile serred a regular apprenticeship to mechan ical trade, has gradually worked his way up from the position of &journeyman mechanic to that of a large manufacturer, by the solo aid of his own industry, energy and talent, and has never once forgotten that ho was a workingman or lost his community of feeling with those who toil to lire. Ile has boon for many years iden tified with tho manufacturing interests of Pitts burgh, as well as with the many enterprises which have developed her resources and stimu lated her growth; and in his person we will - Rind to Congress a creditable and efficient 'rep resentative of the great manufacturing interest of the State. Mr. 11000.11.KAD possesses a very clear and sound judgment, is a practical man in the fdlieet sense of the wordiand has the talent and energy as well as the personal address to win his way to complete success among the rep resentatives of the people in Congress. Renter McKinciirr, Esq., to whom the nomi nation Was awarded in the vSd district, is a gentleman in every sense—frank, manly and outspoken, generous, warm-hearted and possess ing talents of a high order that fit him to shine in any leading position. He is a son of Wittism McKinney, a well known leading and enter prising Pittsburgh merchant in his day,and the family of which he is one has long been known as thoroughly identified with the county and its interests. Mr. McKnight is a warm Republican and will make a most useful and excellent rep resentative. His abilities as a speaker and his popular manners will endear him to the people of the district, if Ito gets the opportunity of going before them, and we trust that Butler county will coincide in a nomination no eminently lit td;be made. For Senate, the Convention has presented the name of Joan P. PENNET, E - sq., a young gen tleman of modest and retiring habits but who, although young, unostentatious and unassum• ing, has already won his way to a front rank at the bar and enjoys a very enviable reputation among all who know him. His election is cer tain, and we feel sure he will make his mark in the Senate. •He possesses all the elements which go to make up the popular and success ful legislator, and we anticipate for him a bril liant political career. [ft is due to Mr. Darsie is say, in this con nection, that while his name was used in the Convention for this office by a number of his warm personal friends, who earnestly desired to give the county the benefit of his great ex perience-and tafints in the-Senate, he made no effort himself to obtain the nomination, and would have withdrawn his name if they had permitted him; the vote given to him was therefore a warm compliment fr . ent those who . know, and knowing most highly esteem, him.] The Assembly ticket we think an excellent 'one. lie. Fosysn, of the DiTarth, was renom inated with great unanimity, as he deserved to be. He served with great efficiency last winter, and was in truth every industrious and useful member. His last winter's experience will make him much more serviceable in the next House, which will be made up almost altogether of new men. Mr. ELIAS 11. Wes is the grandson of Capt. Nathaniel Irish of the Revolution, and the son - of• Wm, B. Irish, who was the first U. d. Marshal of this district under President Monroe. He comes, therefore, of good stock, and our personal knowledge of him enables us to say truly that he does no discredit to his pa rentage. Ile is young, ardent, gifted and popu lar, and will make an excellent member. Mr. ZOLLAR IS a Herman by birth, but bas spent nearly all his life in Pennsylvania. He was ed seated and served for a considerable time as a Lutbiran clergyman, but has lately been con nected with the press. Ile held, wo believe, a deputy clerkship under Mr. Shook while he was clerk of the House at Ilarrishuo, and is therefore familiar with the details of legisla tion. Mr. McDowett is a young man of fine business talents, and abilities that qualify him admirably for the place. Ito has rendered good service to the Republican canes by his arduous labors in its behalf, and we are glad to ace him get this substantial token of reward. Mr. DAT ARO is another of the zealous young Republi can workers, who did us good service in 1/35.; and 1817. The Bayard family, of which he is one, is well and favorably known throughout the county, and our nominee does honor to the , name. We know that be will make a good member. The noivinee for Sheriff, JAMES 1.. GRAILAII, is one of the moat popular men in the county, and ho well deifirres the popalarity, lie has earned.— Ho has nothing of the taint of. the demagogue .nion him, but has won his way by theaid of his many good qualities as a man, a citizen and o Christian. lle possesses all tho Jeffersoniau qualifications—honesty, capacity and fidelity Although the contest for the nomination was a warm one, Mr. Gasman has come out of it hon .., orably, without basins given offence Lonny oue, and this is a high compliment of which any man might feel proud. His triumphant oleation • is one of the certainties of Ilia future. , For Prothonotary, the nominee iv DANIEL AIniSISORG-11 workingmen and mechanic, who enioYimuch porsonal popularity and who will rally to , his support generally the workingmen of the community. lfe is an intelligent, enter .. prising and industrious man and possessed of ;..e..ltbilities which qualify him, for the office to ho is named, and we anticipate his success ':' l ?...:!,Without a doubt. The nominee for Commisti•mer, ZACIIABIAS ~ ,rttr76 / 1 1 01, , of Indiana Tr., is a gentleman with ?"..'w,'~ghom wo hatti, long been acquainted and for rhbm wetenterlain to high esteem. Ile has done s service in-the ranks for many years, Jsiind his OM:Soden is not therefore undeserved. Ale will ireeko a good „Commissioner and has a ai d knowledge of the duties of the Office. ;1-;;•'-;.. , , -The gentleman named for Auditor, Jong M. LA lMae, Is one with Whom wo have not the . WASHINGTON DISTRICT.—We have contlicting reports from the Fayette and Greene democratic primary meetinge—one that Greene gives Lazear 900 ma). and Payette 100, and another that Montgomery has 200 ma). in Fayette and Lunar 850 in — Greene. Washington votes on Saturday next and the content will be a close one I For tlin I'ittabury,ll lialottd.l Slessns. Bermes:—Sly attention has boort called to an address of Wm. Haslett, Esq., editor of the- Butler At•tt r,enc, Mc Alntericnn nod „t, Boiler County," and published in his pep, of the 2tl inst. This address embraces some remin iscence of the meeting of Allegheny and Butler Congressional Conferees, at Bakerstown in 1652, in the course of which Mr. Hazlett says "It woe suggested, bovrever, by myself and others. that inasmuch as we conceded the first enndidate to Allegheny,.and as Butler County vas ,noch the tat,' populous sille of the district, it was hot fair for Os to claim three of the five Congressional terms under the existing apportionment "The justice of this was so palpable that our Alla. gheny friends not only acceded to it but the propo sition to give three terms to Butler county was offi cially made by Jooeen KING, E.g., of tic it moo dekgatcs.' Mr. Haslett woe not present at the Bakerstown Conference in 1552, and as I think him incapable of wilful misstatements, ho has doubtless been led into error by others. The facts arc, that the Allegheny Conferees, Messrs. R. H. Davis, John Way and my - self, had been led by the correspondence of Hon. S. A. Parviancei with parties in Allegheny, to expect that the Butler County Conferees, Messrs. Sullivan, Corns and MeJunkin, would promptly and cordially co-operate with us in renominating Mr. Howe, who WIN then Incumbent for his first term, and entitled both by courtesy and preedent, as well as by his eminent merits, to a second nomination. We were therefore both surprised and chagrined to find the Butler Conferees pertinaciously opposing through numerous ballotings the nomination of Mr. Ilowe. The day having been spent in fruitless efforts to agree, woof Allegheny were about to withdraw, when a proposition was made, not by me, but by Mr. Mc- Junkin, of Butler, to concede the nomination we sought on condition of yielding three terms under the present apportionment to Butler. To this 1 promptly answered that we had no authority to pledge the Allegheny co,nstituenoy to any earl, terms that the utmost we could do would Ins it, but that such recommendation would to of no binding obligation on the pooplo of Allegheny. At this juncture the following resolution, prepared and offered, not by Co', but by Mr. MeJunkin. of Ifollee. WOO adopted—ono or two of our men-voting agoWoit That in conceding the first candidate for Congress under the new apportionment to Alle gheny co., we rw00.t...a that nix years of the remain der of the term under said apportionnomt be conced ed to Butler county." [Vide Pit,datrgh ti atone, August 20, 1052.1, It remains for me only to state, that at the Con ference in 1052. I exhibited a certified extract front the Census office of the population in the 224 district showing the • Butler part of the district to °unfair, 30,000, and the Allegheny side of the district 42.000. (Fractions omitted in both cases.) It wasalso shown that the portion of Allegheny county comprising the 21st district bad a fractional excess of 13,000 ever the ratio, thus 'clearly demonstrating the right of Allegheny where favors are to be distributed, to the larger share, and suggesting to the Boiler nominee of laffS (whether Mr. Paiute° or 31r. Haslet.) considerations of both duty and policy upon which they and their respective friends in Butler county ate expected to co-operate earnestly and cordially with us of Allegheny in rending Robert McKnight to represent us in the national legislature by a too pray that will at once mark nor sense of the evils with which the nation is afflicted, and our determin • ation to combat these evils by the mouth-of a repro. mutative, whose hoe forensic abilities, parity of mor al character, energy and bock/cote, peculiarly quali fy him for the service. JOSIAH KING. Alleghervy, Jute. 7, DSO. Mr. K. 11. Davis has read and entirely concurs in the above statement. Mr. Way being out of reach. has not seen it, but has expressed himself in like manna.. TEre close of the session is so near that there is no hope of a modification of the tariff at this session of Congress, much as the country needs it, greatly as the treasury demands it. We shall -flounder on, in the same way, with the expendi tures exceeding the revenue, and the dencjeney made up by debt, till the increasing burdellehall force Congress into higher rates of duties. The present time, which is in many respects favor able to a judicious adjustment, will pass by un improved. It is to be hoped, however, that Mr. Simmons's bill, which we have already published, for the prevention of fronds in the revenue, may yet pass.—Nothing mut be mere reasonable. It in volves no newprinciple; In fact, it makes no new law, bit^only arrests the facilities for the viola tion of existing laws. We do not consider 'Lot its re jection as an amendment to the loan bill is to be taken as decisive of its fate, when it comes op in a more proper form. There must be, however, a revision of the tar iff. The hasty changes that were forced through the last Congress, under the apprehension that the country would be ruined by the nceumulo lion in the treasury, are full of errors, and the w, nee whole, suits hardly anybody vision must be made, deliberately, in good tern. per, and we,hope with enlarged and net i.mni sentiments. . • The report made in the House in favor of an abandonment of all duties on import, and n re sort to direct taxation, we look upon as of no significance.
