Thrilling Account of the Pro-Slavery Aturdera rn Linn County. ,Coereorienoleoce of the Ft Lout. Dovuerxt.l Lawansoz, K. T., May 29, 1858. Although several reports have reached here of a battle between the Pro-Slavery forces now assembling in Cass and Bates counties, and he Free State men on his aide of the line, in Lynn and Bourbon, it does not appear that there has - been, yet, any serious collision. Of the mas sacre at Chouteau's trading post, you have probably got the particulars ere this. It is gen erally admitted to have been one of the most cold-blooded atrocities ever committed in this country. At I have received the most authentic details, I will give you a few of them, as this is a historical event of the deepest interest to Kansas and the whole country : The invading party at the time it entered thu Territory, numbered 311 men. These were well armed, several of them having Sharpe'S rides. The party was partially composed of men who have been living about Fort Scott. Of these were Dr. George F. Hamilton, Brockett, mu, , and several others of the Fort Scott gang. Mr. Hamilton a Pro-slavery man, who lives on Osage river, was goo with them, as was his eon. They have been active in former difficulties. Some four or five United States soldiers that were driven from Capt. Anderson's Company of Dragoons, at Fort Scott. for participating in the murder of Denton and Hendricks, were also of this party. The remainder of the party, none of the prisoners or persons why saw them re cognized, and they aro supposed to be Missou rians from the border. The invaders came in near totChouteau•s tra ding post, on the Osage, in Lynn county. This was some distance further North than the scene of the former difficulties- No intelligence of their approach had been received by any one. Old Mr. Hamilton and his eon, who were of the party, reside in the Bain, section. They pro ceeded at once to arrest such men as they hap pened to come across. None of those thus taken have had anything to Jo with the Fort Scott difficulties, in any shape. Several of them have only been a few days in the territory. floe of them was a Baptist missionary, the Rev. Charles Read, who came to Kansas within the past year The prisoners were not told why they had been taken, or where they were being taken, or what was to be their fate. They were entirely un armed. Most of them were at work in the field when arrested. One of them, Mr. Stilwell, lived twenty miles distant from where he was taken, anti was driving his leant along the road to Kansas City for provisions, when he was taken. It appears that a portion of the invading band had either not been informed as to what was to be dons with the prisoners, or had not the nerve to commit the crime when it tame to the trial. After some discussion amongst them selves on the subject, a dozen of the left the party and rode back to' 4;1, e at' the gallop. The remainder of the num bering twenty three, led their prisoners, twelve in number, into a deep and narrow ravine.— I Here they ranged them in line close together, in the bottom of the ravine. The gorge was so narrow that the Pro-slavery hand had to stand above their victims, and fired down on them. Had this not been the case, thus destroyig their aim, It is likely that every one of them would have been killed. The order of fire was given by old Hamilton, and was given several times before it was obeyed. Hamilton and his eon firing before the others. • After one volley had been fired all of tho prisoners fell, killed or se verely wounded, except two, one of whom was only slightly wounded, and the other unhurt; but In order to save himself he feigned death. After the prisoners fell, the assassins fired at them while on the ground. Some of them dis charged their revolvets at the prostrate bodies, and others leaded and fired their pieces. One of the survivors who although severely wounded, is likely to recover had a revolver placed close to his ear and discharged. The ball glanced off , along the cheek bone, and came out making a frightful wound at his mouth. After the shooting, the murderers rode off, evidently terrified at their own act. They rob bed the prisoners, however. Mrs. Read, the wife of the Baptist missionary, followed the party that captured her husband. She heard the firing and feared the worst. Fearful and excited, while hurrying in the direction, she met a portion of the band coming back. She demanded what they had done with them, but they only scowled and swore at her, and rode on. Soon she met another party of them, and one of them was leading her husband's horse. "This is my horse !" she exclaimed, "where are you taking him ?" Strange to say, the MB dismounted, and gave up the horse, saying "if he is your horse you may take him." She then said, "What have you done with the prisoners ? You sorely have not shot them? —where are they !" •"Yes, we have," said one, and ho pointed in an opposite direction to that of the ravine, in dicating that they were there. She, however, hurried on in the direction from which she had hoard the firing, and soon came to the ravine. When she came to it and looked down and saw the men lying, she thought it was more of the Missouri party keeping watch, and without ven turing into the ravine, she cried "Where ore the prisoners T—What hors you done with them ?" tier husband recognizing her voice called her to COMO down. What a spectacle presented it self ! Eleven taco lying in that narrow ravine, weltering in their blood, dead or wounded.— They sent her to got assistance, and raise the alarm. After the murderers had left, the wound ed and dying men were able to converse with each other, and those who were dying, nod those who thought themselves dying, told their oom reties what they wanted done with their properly, so that the survivors could attend to it if they escaped. What an awful scene was thus pre sented. The dead and wounded were removed to the trading poet. Medical assistance was sent for. Messengers wont down toward Bourbon t ounty for Capt. Montgomery and his free State vol unteers, and Brigadier General McDaniel, of the Territorial militia, was sent fur and called out the militia, and endeavored to co-operate with Capt. Montgomery. Montgomery follow ed the party, and went to the house of old Ham ilton. A portion of the murderers had been there, and the fire was atilt burning at which they had cooked 5011110 food; but they were gone. Having learned that a number of them had taken refuge in West Point, the next day lien. McDaniel end Capt. -Montgomery went to West Point with what force they could raise, to demand that the murderers be surrendered up. McDaniel was very anxious that everything should be done regularly, and according to what he supposed to bylaw. Th eyb alted some distance from the town, and sent a messenger. This gave the murderers the warnin g they wanted, and they escaped in the opposite direction. Three of the men with the free State party, being dissatisfied with the course pursued, left their companions and approached the town by the high hill on the West. They were seen, and a party of half a dozen persons came out to take them. In en deavoring to do so, the latter party fired upon the three men, who returned the fire. It ap. pears that no one was hurt, but this skirmish, together with the escape of the guilty parties hid the affect of defeating the expedition. They returned to the territory. Meantime a war ex citement was got up in the State. Those who had murdered Free fitatemen in the ravine pre tended that it waa done in abattle with Capt. Mont gomery. Brockett math° liamittens rode along the Missouri border making inflammatory speeches, and pretending that the Free Btatemen bad began the war. Tho proceedings agei n et Weit Point gave some color to their report that the "Abolitionhda",were invading ,the. &ate,— Men are reported to have been raised in 'consid erable numbers in Jeans', Cue and. Bates maim altd, bare DINA thriatione From K While passing over Long Island Bound, on a beantifuievening of last July, I met with a gen tleman well known for his classic lore, and in con versation he mentioned the name of a mutual ac quaintance of my f=illy. He then spoke of the fine paintings which adorned her mansion, and informed me that he had been much puzzled in regard to one of these pictures until he saw IL—for the lady had informed him that it was a choice specimen of the Italian school, the sub ject of which she did not know, "but the name on the back read JrprrEn AND Tess" He then asked me if I remembered any such combina tion of old Jove and Ten. The nearest I could divine was Jupitor-tonane ; or perhaps, the ten were a portion of the Lii majares,—Mrs. Juno possibly being absent. My questioner however ' shook his head, and I gave 'up the riddle. I have since heard it pot to many persons, and among them the Rev. Editor of the N. American Reciem, and Mr. George B. Hillard of Boston. The latter was the only one who solved the enig ma at a single guess. Mentioning the subject of Mrs. Chub's ••splendid painting" to M. James T. The Free Statemen of Ossawatomie, Moneks, Hyatt, Cresco, Greeley and all the set tlements Borah have been, and are mustering In arms to repel the inyttsion. Gov. Denver, who was complained to, went to Leavenworth for troops, and it is reported has started down with a force along the Leav enworth and Fort Scott road, which rune along the border. He is said to be highly incensed at the Missouri invasion, and is reported to have said that if the Governor of Missouri did not put a atop to it, he, Denver, would go Into Mis souri and do it. In order to keep in with the Pro-Slavery party, however, he has sent down the United States Marshal to arrest Montgom ery, who now commands the Free State forces that aro mustering to defend the border. Such are the aspects of the case at the present mo ment. In Cass county, Missouri, a meeting of the respectable citizens waS held several days ago. The evidence was heard touching the massacre at the trading poet, and the massacre Indig nantly condemned. A committee of four was dispatched into Kansas to inform Capt. Mont gomery, or any other of the citizens of Kansan, that there was a party In Missouri who were ready and anxious to aid them in punishing the marauders, and putting a stop to these outrages.
